For nearly 400 years the Mountain Yaqui resisted outside control, hiding in the high sierras of Sonora and Chihuahua. Their wars against the Mexican government lasted until the late 1920s.

I am Yaqui, my family is Yaqui. My family has always been so proud to be Yaqui. They never ever claimed to be Mexican they always said no we are YAQUI. My family was so proud to not have been “colonized” they passed down stories of fighting the Mexican government. My 3 great grandfather was in the Mexican military, he got word of their plan to attack the Yaqui’s in the late 19th century. He fled north to Sonora and warned them and got his children (my ancestors) from there up into the territory of Arizona. They stayed with the pimas and other tribes. I was told he would go back and forth from Mexico to the territory of Arizona smuggling in Yaqui children and some mothers. Many Yaqui wives chose to fight with their husbands! There was a bounty of Yaqui’s heads by both governments at the time! It was very unsafe for us! This is why many Yaqui descendants don’t know their history because a lot of Yaqui’s were afraid to speak of being Yaqui and it was safer to claim to be Mexican. All people who are Yaqui should be so proud, our ancestors are warriors, extremely intelligent people, with such a rich culture. We also are very spiritual people, we are very connected to the earth and our family’s. God bless Yaqui’s

My great grandmother and my grandfather are Yaqui, it’s a very hush hush thing in the community. Some “racism” involved, shame, light skin vs darker skin mixing was not ok in some places etc etc… my nana said people don’t like to talk about the mixed bloodline, even if it was for love. Idk why other families would be so quiet about it but that is the explanation given to me.

@TessaC for what I've heard of Sonora people is that the majority are Yaqui, El valle de los Yaqui. Also Pascua Yaqui Tribe is located Southwest Arizona near Tucson, 60 miles North from the Mexico border. You are correct of all the area's in Mexico you mentioned of Yaqui people live or were born. How to get recognized as a Yaqui is hard, do to our ancestors passing and not leaving a record behind. The only record we have is the words our grandparents and stories told to us of our people.

There is also a story that someone further down my great 3x's grandmother was a Yaqui. I am unclear of the time periods and the exact people, but I want to know more about who my people were before the Spanish and Mexican influence

This made me think of the Apache hold-out. Thus, the introduction into our lexicon "Geronimo!' Every original culture has a name for this character that we can all relate to. Think of Mel Gibson in Braveheart ("Freedom") or Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves. "Kamikazi" and Tienamen Square. Sorry did not spell check all of this but the images were coming in quickly : )

My great grandmother was Yaqui. As my mom's cousin explained, 100%. One of her brothers was hanged in the revolution, and her sister died, so she took her sister's son and daughter to California, raising them as her own. She never married my great grandfather, who was a sometimes coyote, sometimes boiler maker in the mines. Though he went back after several years here, and the birth of my grandmother, found work and wrote for my grandmother to follow, she said she would never go back. I only found this out through my mom's cousin who I visited as an adult in Mx. He didn't know what happened to my great grandfather, or the two remaining brothers of my great grandmother. I'm probably related to half of Sonora by now.

I look just like my Yaqui grandma. Light skinned, hazel eyes but my mom is white so I'm a tad lighter but I tan dark. It's the Spaniards who settled in Guaymas. Both Yaqui sides have Green eyes, red hair too.

I’m a quarter Mexican bc my dad is half but my grandmother on his side had Yaqui blood in her. I’ve always been connected to nature I’d like to believe that even if we have the smallest drop of native blood in us that the spirit of our ancestors, and they’re fighting desire to not give to the Spaniards lives on. I am a messianic believer and my creator and savior, and it really bothers me more than anything, knowing what was done to native peoples all over the world by what most people will call the “church” but the Roman Catholic Church has murdered more innocent people and done more damage. Then most people are even taught to believe or acknowledge. All you have to do is go back and look at our ancestors and what they were put through. My dad grew up Catholic obviously as he’s Mexican, but he says one time he saw an angel, while he was at church, and I firmly believe that many Mexicans and native people are protected, even from those who would seek to hurt them to teach the man’s tradition over the truth of their creator, and savior, because God knows and he is watching what has been done to his over the world, his chosen nation who he promised would be saved by the sacrifice of his son. I might just look like a white lady to most people. This comment might come off dramatic or maybe even offensive to some but I am so happy that this tribe runs in my blood. True believers and remnant walk on and spirit and truth I’ll never forget the fight innocent natives put up to reject the twisted teachings of the Roman Catholic Church that is so far removed from true faith and I’m sorry if this offends any Catholics, it’s not that you are bad for being that way time is running out, and we must see our truly outside of man-made tradition that will keep us bound.

@@mexicounexplainedthanks for being so kind I kinda went on a rant there! 😂but NOTHING bothers me more than how they forced the Catholicism roots onto native ppl bc I’m big on my faith I believe MOST native ppl were already acting more like Christ than a lot of Spanish settlers bc they were not bound by mans tradition until these ppl forced them too. They KNEW how to care for the land and the young and old this is all in the Torah or otherwise known as the Old Testament. Then the enemy comes in and other nations follow and exploit each other and NOAH was specific when he got off the arc and split the world up between his three sons that they were NOT supposed to be stealing the land from their brothers. Each one was appointed their own portion. It’s really deep and long I’m sorry but as long as we can love our neighbors as we live ourselves we would be in a much better place. We’re all the same flesh and blood

Yeah, unfortunately the Mexicans had no friendly relations with Native Americans. They allied with some tribes though. Example, I'm Native American from the Yavapai tribe, my people used to form military alliances with the Apaches and together, the 2 tribes would head down into Mexico to go fight the Mexicans. In retaliation the Mexicans would band together with Pimas, Papagos, Maricopas. These 3 tribes were traditionally enemies to the Yavapai and Apache.

My Soon-to-be Ex-Wife is part Yaqui. It saddens me that it could not work out. But for the record, it was not so much due to Cultural and Language differences, so much as it was because of Mental Health differences and the Roman Catholic Church Diocese in our area of where I used to live, (in CA.'s Central San Joaquin Valley Area), not having good enough Ministerial Resources available, (such as Pastoral Marriage Counseling etc.). The Diocese of Fresno is Predominantly Hypocritical in how it lives out its So-called Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Christian Faith. Please Pray for them and at the same time, put your Prayers into action.

@@marktwaine9344 I do believe that it is Triune God's way of punishing the Church for not having worked hard enough to stop Martin Luther, (founder of the Lutheran Protestant Heretic Church), and the other Schismatics that followed from doing what they did, but also Triune God is angry towards the Roman Catholic and Apostolic Christian Church for the Schism of 1054 A.D. I do know that it has become steeped in corruption, but I do believe that it can be reformed and refined like Gold in the Refiner's Fire, but it is up to us, "the Laity" to do something about it, rather than be apathetic and lazy. I wanted to lead the Roman Catholic and Apostolic Christian Church through another Reformation Movement, but I could not find enough support.

Lots of wannabe natives here in the comments section. Just because someone in your family told you that your great grandpa was part Yaqui doesn't mean you are. People with last names like Gomez, Martinez, Rubio, etc., seem to want to deny their mostly European parts and cling to some remote indigenous fantasy from a distant past. No, you're not Native, you're a Mexican-American with Mestizo blood trying to feel special. It's pretty sad.

My Mexican-American professor was lecturing students that the white man took their lands and rightfully it belongs to Mexican people. I was puzzled at this narrative he was creating with the students who were mostly mexican-American, and then I rose my hand and said, " But Mexicans themselves took lands from the natives." He then let out a sigh and replied yes in shame. Natives are still here, and the erasure is still ongoing among our institutions

@@mexicounexplained well , for more context, the comment came from a discussion / lecture on the topic of how Mexican Americans had been unfairly treated by the Americans. More specifically, how Mexican families have been deported on numerous occasions, I suppose you'd need to rifle up the students, given the politics at that time 2016.

The tribal Indigenous people think in tribal terms not in national terms as Mexican. The term Mexica or so-called Aztec, a name given by anthropologist, came from the name Mexico and later Mexican a nationalistic term. They are all Indigenous people of the Americas whether tribal or not. Afro-Americans who do not have tribal identification or true African culture, are still of African origin. The same applies to the Mexican people whether tribal or not.

Yeah tribes in general fought each other. They were just people like everyone else in this world. The United States and Mexican government were really dependent on tribes fighting each other. That divide/conquer strategy. The Spaniards recruited tribes that were traditional enemies to the Aztecs. The United States used other Apache bands to fight against Geronimo and his chiricahua warriors. Even my people (the Yavapai tribe) teamed up with Tonto Apaches to fight against General Crook and his Calvary but other tribes aided Crook. Which led to our surrender.
