In this video I share with you my hike up Mt. Rainier via the Skyline trail and across the Muir snowfield towards Camp Muir. I also have to evacuate my campsite due to smoke from wildfire in the surrounding area.

I'm Christine and after my plans to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in 2020 were derailed, I have decided to spend time living on the road-- camping, hiking and backpacking. #vanlife haha! Most of the time I am leading a minimalist life, off-grid in the wilderness backcountry or boondocking at camp.

Rule #1 for glacier trekking is "Never alone." Trust your intuition and common sense when mountaineering, safety first always; especially when alone. Your a special young lady, so never second guess yourself. As always, the aesthetic s of the scenery throughout your video was spectacular (notably 13:08 for about 10 sec.) even with the haze from the forest fires. Keep safe!

You absolutely could have summited however the difference between you and all those others was that they weren’t alone. You can be the best climber/ hiker in the world but if something happens and you are alone and a snow bridge collapses or a crevasse opens up, you are f’d! I am all for hiking and backpacking alone but there is a boundary when you truly need to have a buddy with you and this was one of those situations! You made the right choice 👍🏼

Being "responsible by other people's standards". I totally relate to everything you said. If it was up to some of the people in my life, I would never leave the house because it's too dangerous to be adventurous. Thanks for sharing this. Loved hearing your thoughts.

I know that spot in the park. My mom and I stayed at the historic hotel there that’s super cool. I did part of that hike. The view from the parking lot of the mountain is insanely beautiful and only gets better and better. I’m so glad you got to do that trail and share it with us.

I understand what you're experiencing and explaining regarding being cautious based on other people's standards, but I think it's the best way to proceed. I'm a lot like you in that I tend to hike solo and there's many things I'd like to do and I'm not afraid to do, but after applying much thought to it I've decided to continue on the side of caution. But I loved this hike, it was beautiful. Too bad about all the wild fires. Many of my favorite day hike trails in the Angeles National Forest are gone now. Darn!

It’s ok to turn around and go back. If you were hiking with a friend or something, that would be different but you aren’t. Such beautiful scenery. You did make the wise choice in turning around as well as picking up camp with the wildfire close by. They move so fast and it is scary.

Almost died TWICE on that mountain. Lightning and avalanche. Alpine climbing is a team activity. Then there was the single engine aircraft that flew into a glacier.....recovery had not yet started. Rainier gives me the creeps. Great vid!

Wow! I got chills when you started crossing that snowfield. Epic! You have really come a long way since i started watching the channel. Right now its not a good time to be hiking anywhere in the west.. we also just had to cut our Uinta Highline trip short due to fires. Like you said, the trails/mtns will be there next time. Nothing wrong with following your gut when making decisions on your safety or comfort level. Keep growing!

Christine, your best defense while hiking is your instinct. I would not push myself beyond my comfort zone alone unless it was a matter of survival. You are very brave and looks like your in very good shape but almost anything can happen unexpectedly on a hike. I have turned around many times because of weather and have never thought I did the wrong thing. Opening up crevasses is not something to take lightly. Did you have an ice axe or rope with you, not that the rope would help much alone, but might. I have never climbed Rainier but crevasses are something that you need to have emergency equipment with you and experience. Many hikers have fallen into them. As I said, I haven’t climbed Rainier, so maybe your route was on the safe side for open crevasses but you were alone. Just my food for thought. Don’t get down on yourself for being smart on the mountain. The ones that have the attitude that nothing will ever happen to them will be the ones that get in trouble. Keep up your good sense hiking. A beautiful hike and video.

The route to Camp Muir requires caution but not necessarily specialized gear or training. The real danger of crevasses comes after Camp Muir and I wouldn’t go there alone.

This Girl Hikes I am 73 and have never climbed Rainer as I said and also I have always climbed with my husband. Most of my climbing was back East where weather could become very bad in a matter of 15 min over Mt. Washington. Not high mountains back there but you need to use caution on every one. So many have died thinking just because it is only 6,000 ft, they can do it easy. Mountain safety and common sense comes first always when climbing. So, your climbing alone takes great courage and I can see you won’t try anything dangerous alone. I am envious of you out there finding new places to explore. I hope you have many many more enjoyable gorgeous hikes.

Don’t worry about not getting to Muir. I have summited Rainier twice and could totally see how what you were doing was a little on the intimidating side. If you would have went on a busy weekend you could have followed a massive line of people up but that may have not been a peaceful experience. It will be there for you next time and you will be fine!

I know how you analyze a situation. Recently, I hiked the Cascade canyon trail in Grand Teton to lake Solitude. I learned how to use my garmen to track so if I got into trouble, I was hiking alone, I could SOS for help. That was a huge relief as I was hiking alone in bear habitat to a new destination. When I got back to Jenny lake visitor center, I was exhausted but exhilarated. But I understand your trepidation as I too frequently hike alone. But having the garmen puts my mind at ease if I get into trouble.

You are a beast to hike that far up one of the tallest mountains in the US by yourself over a huge glacier so I think it was a good call to turn back since you are alone. And how awesome to glissando. Good practice for the sierras on the PCT
@kellyjohnson3617
@kellyjohnson3617 4 жыл бұрын
I meant to say glissade but anyway, to add. You are right to not let fear stop you but overcoming those fears is a process. And I’ve found that listening to myself is an art. Not letting other voices drown out what I know is true. Good job on seeing that. If you felt like turning back was right, then it was right at that moment. And next time you will be able to listen to yourself better. But being alone in hazardous and unfamiliar conditions can be overwhelming. I turned back on a hike recently for the same reason and looking back I’m still torn as to whether it was the right choice. But I think it was the right choice of the moment. And I will be better prepared when I go back there. I didn’t have the opportunity to prepare fully for that hike because it was unknown territory with nothing online to tell me what the hike would be like. Now that I did part of it and talked with others about it, I will be way better prepared to do it. So good for you. Keep up the good work. Thanks for posting your insights. I benefit from them too

Having never been there, it would be impossible to judge your decision not to continue. As for me, I put a great deal of trust in my own abilities to ascertain a situation, and then make a decision. You did that, and with all the fires in the the area, and the uncertain stability of the snow fields, my call would have been the same as yours. Maybe next time, but not this time. Sincerely DMC

Being an old Colorado mountaineer, I can assure you that it is always okay to turn around - the mountain will always be there. Caution, in mountaineering, is what will keep you alive - you have to learn to push it, but when it's time to turn around, it's time to turn around (I've done it a lot of times and I've also had a lot of successes). My only suggestion would be to start out a lot earlier than you did. If you would have continued, best chances are that you would have had to spend a lot of the return in the dark, which is dangerous. As JCB said, there are old mountaineers and there are bold mountaineers, but there are no old, bold mountaineers...

I've never questioned someone's decision to turn around. Only they know the circumstances at the moment. Just because one can doesn't mean one should. And, like you said, the mountain isn't going anywhere. And this year's fires. Ugh! I had to cancel doing the last two sections of the Arizona Trail this week because of fire damage. I got calls from both the BLM and the Forest Service saying they haven't done the trail assessment and so haven't opened the trail. I was halfway on the drive to the trailhead in Flagstaff when I found out. Oh well, next year, I guess. Thanks for taking us along.

I live about 6ft above sea level and got winded just watching you. I've read our minds instinctively protects us from danger after many years of evolution from the cave man days. I've also read some people are over wired with this instinctive protection mechanism and that's the cause of excessive abnormal anxiety. In this case I would say that mechanism was accurate in telling you, you've gone far enough now turn around.
