This is incredibly done. As a young east coast ripper we need more of these films showcasing where we learned the ropes before moving out west. I love the rockies but the mountains of Western NC always draw me home to slide down the shit snow. It’s not where I ski now, but it’s what ignited the flame inside me. Mountains like whaleback have to be saved and kept honest.

Thanks to Whaleback and the programs with Inclusive Ski Touring for introducing me to splitboarding last year. You all bring so much value to New England. Proud to be an Indy Pass skier and snowboarder. I grew up skiing and snowboarding these same mountains, when I was able to move to New Hampshire, I have felt so grateful to continue to patronize these mountains that may be physically smaller but big in heart and experience.

Thanks for the film a wonderful reminder of my local ski mountain in the 60s Big Tupper . It closed in the late 90s and hopes to open again. The memories of friends all learning to ski is what kept me going . Now 73 and still skiing and every day I ski , Big Tupper is with me. I owe so much to Big Tupper and wish my son had a place like Big Tupper to understand some of life’s lessons. God Bless these ski hills .

Thank you TGR and IndyPass for giving these (4) Non-Profits their well deserved attention. The community spirit is alive and well in an increasingly difficult business landscape. Margins have never tighter yet mission statements to help keep skiing affordable and approachable for working families are greatly aided by non-profit status. We still need creative ways to attract and maintain skiers' interest. Playing to the strengths of unique assets and leaning heavily on volunteers are just a few ways to gain customers' life-long interests. From everyone at Black Mountain of Maine, we offer sincere gratitude for spending some time with us and welcome all to the BMOM family. Keep the stoke high. Jeff Marcoux (Angriest Beaver)

BLACK MOUNTAIN of Maine is so overshadowed by corporate giants. THEY HAVE THE ACTUAL BEST back country Maine skiing. The VOLUNTEERS who do the cutting are Rockstars. MOST MAINERS in the area have hiked and skied white cap, even fewer hiked and then skied the back half of black mountain, after hiking its sister mountain and skiing down it.

I see a good future for the small areas. WIth satellite internet, good jobs are more availalbe. The property costs are more reasonable. Add a modest size lake for the town and you have year around recreation at your door step. For those who want more challenge, just change your gear to telemark skis or backcountry skis. Now the little mountain is more fun. I've done it and enjoy it. There is a great future for small places with recreation that is availalbe every day instead of on vacation. It is a life changer.

This is such an amazingly inspirational down-to-earth ski story! I honestly just love watching these real worlds folks having the time of their lives on genuine slopes. Seriously beats yet another dude hucking his meat off a massive cliff or charging some “extreme” slope. BIG THANKS to TGR for making this available to all of us on KZbin and getting back to the roots of skiing and boarding. Now I need to get off the couch, strap on the skis, and get after it!

We started skiing with our 5 and 7 year old boys at Arctic Valley Ski Area (non-profit) in Anchorage, Alaska and loved the family orientation, convenience, and youth programs. My older son is now the General Manager after working in the local tourism industry for years. Along with great volunteers, they have rebuilt and expanded the infrastructure and programs to offer a wonderful alternative to the much larger for-profit ski area. They are part of the Indy Pass program. Come north!

Top shelf production. I learned to ski at "the butte" during the 14 years it was closed. Walking/ crawling up that first time had me hooked. Kids ski free might be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Whoever made that happen is a hero.

What is the vertical? What is the base elevation. Love mom pop ski areas. I was raised at them. Tired of the big box store ski areas. In upstate NY many communities had their own town or local areas. They were family friendly. You could bring your dog, people cooked great meals to share. Tons of lore and legend. Some of the greatest skiers I have ever seen populated these slopes. I remember when a local hotdog made a huge jump by the parking lot and we all came out the day a rumor went around town he was going to jump over a bus. It actually happened. Dry Hill Watertown NY Hall lift the old one and two people chairs were made in Watertown and this was the testing ground. Also late 60s early 70s. They were lost in ski magazine as having the best pizza of any ski hill. Maybe 400 vertical but people were doing crazy shit. Also the training area for the 10th mountain division at Camp/Fort drum. Great memories skiing and sitting around the huge round fireplace. They just put in a magic carpet which will be great for their beginner clients. Owned now by Boo and Pat Jareo who are great owners and even better people.

Love to see people fighting back against companies who only know greed like Vail Resorts, Inc. who owns resorts all over the world. They also buy up all the real estate in the mountain towns so everyone is forced to rent, truly making mountain living impossible. Sad the world has come to this...

I love the idea of non profit snow areas, but maybe there’s a lesson from pro profit business in general. Charge more to add to rainy day fund. And I don’t be mean gouge prices like vail, but on a good year with snow and revenue, would’ve cushioned bad years where it doesn’t snow. East coast is similar to the Midwest, and these are the type of place we need but let’s look at cail resorts. Night skiing at afton at Aston alps used to be 20$ 430-10. It’s 70$ now. What I’m saying is helping out is good but just make it cheap, not free cause ultimately the place is closed down.

Small affordable ski areas are the future for working class people to enjoy skiing. Class warfare is worse than ever when it comes to skiing. Who can pay the prices for the big box store resorts? The other answer is hike up and ski no crowds, no lift lines, better food, bring your dog. Just look for power or gas lines. Plus you sweat off your fat ass.

Skiers talking about not- for- profit?? Nothing- absolutely nothing- operates without profit. How about the "nature lovers" start focusing on the man-made costs, the taxes, the regulations, the fees, the permits, etc. imposed by government? Why- given their alleged love of family areas- don't they speak of the destruction imposed by government? Is it because they love big government more?

Amazing what people are capable of when they aren't seeking profit... almost seems like capitalism is an inherent problem to sustainability. Also big that this film was released soon after future president of the US announces their desire to redefine Non-profit organizations, really hope this doesn't hurt these beautiful communities.
