Thank you for your comparison of those two calibers! I'm planning to step up from .308 Winchester because it often doesn't give the spotter much to work with beyond 900 yards. At least that is the case on the range I have to use to shoot that far, which is the Coldbore Range in neighbouring Denmark. At first I thought about the .338 Lapua, but the dies won't fit into my reloading press. The press is one of a kind, built by a professional toolmaker at a time the .338 Lapua wasn't around, I am sort of attached to it. I'm very happy to see that the .300 PRC can compete with the .338 Lapua because that is more than I was hoping for. Guns, Glory, Germany ;-)

I second that. If you have press clearance issues the 300prc "can" get long at a C.O.A.L of 3.850". Also donor actions are much easier to find being a standard magnum size action if you decide to build a rifle from scratch. Another good cartridge to look into is the 7saum. I would think that 7mm bullets might be easier to find in Germany. I've never heard of anyone saying that "my 338lapua was the easiest rifle I've ever loaded for".

I shoot a 338 LM at 1 mile at milkjugs (that's ~1/3 moa). I shoot hornady 285 ELDM, Lapua brass, us869 powder 104 gr, and Federal LRP powder. the ammo has a 9 fps extreme spread and 4 fps standard deviation, and 2800 fps MV the barrel is a 29" bartlein match straight taper with 1:8 twist. it's a tack driver! the problem is the recoil and concussion (and $) caused me to develop a trigger slap (,like a few I saw here) and an anticipate and flinch 😢 I moved to a 6.5 cm for lower recoil, 1/2 the cost.. I have 29" kreiger barrel with 1:7.5. I shoot 153.5 bergers. I don't feel I lost anything with the 6.5 other than the >1 mile and energy down range. I love 338 LM, was curious about 300 PRC, so this comparison was awesome. but I shot a 6.5 and fell in love (note my 6.5 actually weighs 2 lbs more than my 338 LM so recoil is next to nothing)

Fairly certain we can get that rifle to 1 mile, but I want to get a 300 prc and hope to get it out to mid 2500s. Modern bullets and powders really make the 30 cal shine. When I was a kid, no one would have thought a 30-06 could get first shot hits on a 12x24 at 3/4 mile, and I am a total rookie.

I went thru the same thing 2 years ago. I was able to connect with the 300 PRC out to 2400 using factory ammo. Meanwhile, when I finally strapped the 338 with a tie down, I was able to to shoot it better. Building a more stable position. Look at the shots you missies at 1800ish w the 338. On those two shots you sort of had less follow thru w the trigger to the rear and you were immediately dipping the muzzle to look for impact. All that stuff counts. Cool video and editing!

It is wise to purchase the 300PRC. The 300win mag does not have the capacity to hold bullets larger than 190 grain, while the 300prc can reliably hold up to 230 grain. Now, in terms of price, there is not much difference with the 300winmag. Of course, the 300NORMA MAG is a different story, but for now, the 300PRC is still more cost effective than the 300NORMA MAG. Supersonic Limits (25 degrees, 60% humidity / 26" barrel) 300win - 1470 yards / 195grain 300prc - 1860 yards / 220grain 300normamag - 1970 yards / 220grain I don't think anyone but US military special forces would pay more than double the price to shoot 100 yards farther.

Depending on your setup, a 300WM can actually outperform the PRC but you have to have the right setup (rifle with stock or chassis that will handle a CIP length mag and the chamber throated to handle the longer seat length that the CIP mag will allow for). Once you have that, the 300WM can run the same projectiles as the PRC with similar powder charges and typically get higher MV's (typically in the order of 50 to sometimes as high as 100fps higher). The thing is, you definitely wont find any off the shelf WM ammo that will compete with any off the shelf PRC ammo since all WM ammo will be setup for the much shorter SAAMI length rather than CIP length. But with handloading, especially now that Lapua makes 300WM brass, 300WM in my opinion is a better choice if you have or are willing to build a rifle setup for longer seating.

Cost and recoil advantage goes to 300PRC. Shooting 300 A-tip in the Lapua for a fair comparison, the 338 has a big advantage, especially at sea level. That said you shoot the 300 better. The recoil and muzzlebrake pull off seem to give you a bit of trouble in the 338, not much but you seem to have to correct more after the shot in the 338. Cool video! Keep them coming. Edit. Just listened to the end of the video where you said pretty much the same thing about the recoil. I'd have to agree that the 300 is the way to go for most applications.

For sure I have to focus more on recoil control with the 338, to me the 300 is just much easier to shoot well. While I agree the 300 atip is a solid choice for the 300, I've actually been playing with the 255 ICBM solid copper bullet. BC of something like the 300 atip but the velocity of a light bullet. Me personally I love my 338 LM for 1500-2500 yards and I’m interested in purchasing a .416 Barrett since I’m getting comfortable with my 338. Haven’t had any experience with the 300 PRC but I am open to new calibers.

Very good point on the wooden rod or stake…. I’ve tried tying ribbon on my t post but after a couple rounds the spalling cuts the ribbon and I lose my wind flag haha. I’ve been spending time recently working up a load for the badlands ICBM 255gr copper solid. Have to single load these since they are so long but this should provide a lot more range for the 338LM. Thanks for watching!

You are literally holding my dream rifle. There are lots of amazing calibers but some are very expensive compared to 308 and will wear the barrel out much faster. I’d imagine that for someone just getting into longer range shooting that 308 would be fine out to 600 meters or so to get the fundamentals down especially when you will make a lot of mistakes and need to shoot a lot to learn. I keep thinking that I could build a custom Remington 700 but then I could use that money toward an MRAD. Man, that’s a gorgeous rifle!
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica 2 жыл бұрын
Oh man, 308 is a great starting point for long range. For sure it’ll get you to 600 yds, but I’d say it’s more like a 1000 yd caliber with the rifle bullet. For sure starting with something like a 308 Rem 700 will allow you to build the fundamentals, then as you save up you could sell that and move into a nicer rifle. My opinion the mrad is a really hard rifle to beat! Stay tuned for more mrad content!
@Andrew-cm5tc
@Andrew-cm5tc 2 жыл бұрын
@@MountainsMulletsMerica Thanks for the reply to my comment. I met a guy at my local gun store today who said that 308 Win with a 10x scope would not be adequate for precision rifle shooting because the targets are small and go well beyond the range of 308. He said you could have to shoot a target at 1000 yards that’s only 1 MOA wide and targets go even farther away than that. It sounds like a modern day version of Quigley down under shooting the bucket. The good thing about the mrad though is the ability to change calibers and if you wear out a barrel you can change it yourself. I believe the barrels are much more expensive for the mrad than a precision remington 700 barrel though.
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica 2 жыл бұрын
@@Andrew-cm5tc ah man 308 win with a 10x scope is very capable. Check out my latest video with the old school sr25, I used that rig to make hits at 1000 meters. My experience is when folks are making comments like that it’s because they’ve likely never actually done whatever they are talking about. Regarding the cost of the mrad barrels, you are correct. They are much more expensive than a normal rem 700 barrel but the flexibility in not having to purchase another rifle/ optic helps offset some of the extra cost.

Man it would be awesome to have wide open spaces like that to shoot. You guys are lucky. Here in south Mississippi there are very few wide open spaces. The local range has a 100,200,300yd ranges and I have access to a friends land where he owns a couple 100 acre field where I can get out to 620yds. That’s the farthest I’ve ever been able to shoot. I’ve been doing it so much that ive had to start shooting @ 2-3” plates at that distance. The 8” to 12” targets have gotten pretty routine. Which says a lot because I started with an 18” target and just been working my way down 😂

I was able to hit at 2907 yards with a Hornady 250 Gr A-Tip.going 2803 fps in 19mph winds at full value from 3 oclock.. I recently built a 30 Sherman Magnum shooting the same 250gr ATip.Going 2914 fps. I have not shot it in competition yet.I may not because I purchased a 338 Lapua Magumto use as a donor rifle to build a 33XC. to shoot Hornady 300gr A Tips.I have a barrel with a 1-9 twist. I also built a 375 Cheytac with 1-7 twist in a 35 inch barrel.I shoot 427gr Cutting Edge Solids with it going 3005 fps. The 338 LM is a good choice but withcosts factored and recoil foranew shooter I highly suggest the 300 PRC.. The 30 Sherman out shoots it but the Fire Forming Brass and wear & tear on barrelnlife Id still take the 300 PRC in a Savage 110 Elite for about $1800. will get you into the ELR game competively .Great Video.

I think this is probably the most detailed video on the differences between the 338 and 300PRC. One question I have is what is the barrel life of the 300PRC? I'm thinking of a 24" barrel because I want a hybrid that can be used for both hunting and target shooting. And, thinking of using N570 powder and a slight overpressure charge of 2900 fps with 220-230 grain bullets.

I was thinking I would sell the 338LM barrel after I got the 300PRC barrel but I really just enjoy slinging some 338s occasionally. I only plan to suppress the 6.5CM barrel mainly so I can shoot it at night, I prefer muzzle brakes on the bigger magnum calibers for recoil management. Scope mount is is a Spuhr 4016, super solid!

The US military seems to now favor the .338 NORMA magnum, perhaps because its shorter case runs through heavy machine guns better than the LAPUA round. Historically the .338 LAPUA was developed by two Americans specifically for long range sniping. LAPUA then standardized it with SAAMI and its European equivalent and put their name on it. BTW, WHY DIAL? Just use yer TREMOR reticle for hold changes. I have an H59 reticle on my RPR and I never dial in competition.

It all comes down to your goals. Each caliber has an optimal “distance band” what I mean by that is, you want the minimal amount of gun that thrives at that distance. 300 prc is wasted for shooting steel inside of 800 yds, you won’t take the full benefit until you get out to 1200+ That being said bigger bullets hold up better at distance. The lapua will do better as you get further out, but inside of 2k won’t buy you much. If you only want to shoot to 1 mile a 6.5 prc is a great option, but every couple hundred yards really demand more from the cartridge. One thing you got wrong was 338 Lapua brass is about double the cost of 300 prc. And the factory ammo is way more. If you stay within the practical range of each caliber a 30 cal is a better option. If you really want to get out there, the 338 is better. I think the bullet comparison is a huge issue, eldm are pretty poor bullets, and the wrong bullet tanks a cartridge. Finally, the 338 will have notably bigger down range effects, and holds up better to big wind and switchy wind. It’s like a 6.5 creed vs a 6 dasher. The dasher is easier and preferable for closer stuff, but at distance the 6.5 just dominates (especially with heavies) Long comment, apologies in advance 😅

I want to find the cheapest option for shooting 1 Mile on at least a semi consistent basis. I would like to say consistently but I don't know that there is a budget option that can do that. However I also know absolutely nothing about long range shooting. My longest shot ever only being 475yds. I've never had a rifle capable of shooting much further, nor gave I had the space to do it. But I want the rock bottom price to be able to do it often enough that it's definitely not just luck
