Thank you, this has brought back some very happy memories. I used to love gymkhana games. I won quite a few rosettes but only in the ones where you stay mounted like 'walk, trot and canter' or bending as I never did learn to vault! It's such a shame all the small shows are gone now, mainly due to insurance being so expensive. When I was a teenager we could hack to a show every weekend in the summer holidays as there would always be something going on. Most of them were smaller affairs but the highlight of our year was held in a local park and was very busy with a funfair, vintage cars, stalls etc. People rode in from all around and anyone who could beg, borrow or steal a pony would be there. All the trees would have ponies tied to them! Now you can't do much at all unless you are in the Pony Club and can afford transport and all the rest of it. I feel very lucky to have been able to have such fun and freedom. Best time of my life. 😊 I might see if my friend at the yard wants to have a go at some of these games. She's got a Clydesdale and I've got a part-bred Clydesdale so there will definitely be no vaulting 😁.

At some of our mounted game events, we play a game called the barrel race. You take two 55 gallon barrels, the kind of barrels that is used at rodeos, at barrel racing, but these barrels have both ends removed. Place the barrels at the end of the arena. Each team has a rider race to the barrel, jump off of your horse, crawl threw the barrel, remount your horse n then race back to the starting line. It’s so funny to see the look on your horses face when you come crawling out of the barrel toward them. My horse took one look at me crawling out of the barrel, his eyes got as big as a saucer, he blew out of his nostrils, snorted big n was gone lol.

Mounted games looks so fun as a competition. When I took lessons my last instructor would let us play mounted games every week. I don’t remember if we had to jump off the horses and try to get back on but it was so fun!
