I would use a 12" drywall knife, instead of your hand. You can use parchment paper in-between the canvas and the knife to avoid any scuffs. And the canvas will be perfectly flat.you can even use a plastic wallpaper knife. If the canvas isn't completely flat, when you put the protective coat of varnish it will show every imperfection. I was just curious what kind of glue you use. I bought some ink on canvas prints and would prefer to mount them on Masonite, rather then stretcher bars.

Great suggestions 👍 the glue is called Miracle Muck it’s produced by a company called Raphael’s - you’ll find it on the web - good luck and wipe the back of your prints with a tack cloth this will get rid off any little bits 👍

There are so many ways to achieve the end result. Yours is broadly similar to what I've done recently. I experiment with different methods on small boards to find what works best for me. That may not be best for others of course 😊

Hi Philip- sounds as though you’re doing it right - experimenting on smaller pieces is the way to go 👍

Thank you so much for explaining this so simply...still I've a query... If on a mdf board which is mounted with canvas ( 6×2 ft), I want to paste/fix some wooden circles/ semicircles to complete a art piece. How can I paste it. With which medium. Could you please help me in this... would be happy to see you reply.

Priyanka - in the past when i have wanted to attach something to the canvas (and i'm assuming the shapes are flat) i have used Molding Paste - it doesn't crack and seems to hold really well. Good luck with your project

Greetings Richard, (my grandsun's name is Richard), where do you get the glue? If I were to do a paint pour should I do so before I glue it or after? Thank You.

Firstly, nice easy to follow video. Can I ask what method you use to cut the board with after mounting? Knife or Saw? - Thx again!

Thank you for this video, What is the best per GSM maximum should be linen to attach plywood in egg tempera? I am waiting for answering, thank you.
@richardhall35893 жыл бұрын
I’ve never used egg tempera but it’s ok to mount linen to plywood - I would give the plywood a coat of gesso first to seal it and to reduce the acidity in it - good luck👍

I am doing a large format painting 7' x 8' would I approach this the same way you have here? I have noticed another example using laminall with a iron for heat to apply the linen, what do you know about this application. I am building a frame to hold my Masonite board.

Thanks for the video sir, very good but will the board ever bend or bow? thanks Robert
@richardhallfineart7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, just saw this. You can do larger pieces on 1/2" gatorboard, but 1/2" doesn't fit into the frames as well (it sticks out the back. I've done 48x60 on 3/8" gatorboard. Not trouble with bowing, but I do frame them all.

Richard I have a client with one of my paintings in another country, I followed your process but she is saying there are a couple of bumps appearing, what can I tell her to do the flatten them ?
@richardhall35893 жыл бұрын
Hi Bobby - that’s a tough situation- being in another country makes it hard - it may be that a change in climate and humidity has caused this - i have had this problem once or twice over the years and have fixed it by laying a cloth over the painting and VERY GENTLY using an iron on the lowest setting - I would be okay doing this myself on my own painting but it’s your call to suggest this to your customer to do themselves- I hope you can fix it

Great point👍 really important - if you happen to mount on a board larger than you need you could trim it into alignment but far better to get it right in the first place 👍

I've seen others weight the canvas down until dry. Is that not necessary? Where would one find the canvas glue and what type of board did you use? I have some completed works on canvas that I need to glue to a board for framing and I've watched your vid tree times and really like your technique.

I use a product called "Miracle Muck." It is acid free and reversible. raphaelsap.com/miracle-muck/ The board I use is called "Gatorboard," and is available in 3/8" and 1/2." It is lightweight yet sturdy. A foam filled board, but NOT Foam Core. Foam Core will warp! I used to add weights, but it is not necessary. It dries quickly without warping. Not sure if that's because I'm in Arizona, where it is hot and dry, but I don't have a problem. It's hard to get the weights evenly distributed and not leave indentations. Hope that's helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions.
