Mounting Heliofungia Coral to a rock, how bad of an idea is it?

In todays video I mount a Heliofungia coral to a rock. This goes against everything most of us know about plate coral, so why did I do it?

Best advice ever, even with fungias a lot of them get tissue recession due to sharp rocks in sand etc. Wrasse digging around them. Glue them on the rock like this man says - kept mine for years this way and they will thrive. (have 5 for anyone wondering ;) )

You’re right. They shouldn’t be glued or mounted. You place them on the sea floor or substrate of your aquarium. Read about this in Anthony Calfo’s coral gardening book, a great reference for captive care of corals.

Quick answer is it’s a bad idea. You need to read up on Fungias or Disc corals. They do no fuse to surfaces like acropora for example. You just place them on the substrate. Natural habitat would be like a quiet lagoon where there are sea grasses or mangrove trees adjacent a reef typically.

Wrong - keeping them for years, they do much better glued on rocks. Most Have tissue recession with cuts from sand and fish digging around them.

Heliofungias should be placed on the substrate. They’re not meant to be mounted. They even have the ability to move around on the substrate. Read Anthony Calfo’s book on coral gardening where he discusses these kinds of corals. Many people make the mistake of mounting them. Hopefully you haven’t made the mistake of mounting your Heliofungia. In fact all fungia corals should just be placed on the substrate. Hope I opened your eyes on this. Btw really missing your beloved bubble coral. It was a beauty majestically sitting next to your Tridacna maxima clam.

When I got this coral it was a baby still attached to the mother colony. I mistakenly cut it up because it was mixed in with some torches while I was doing some fraging. I took a piece home and glued the original stock that was attached to the mother colony to the rock work. It wasn’t until I moved it to the 210 that it broke of the original stock. I glued it to the rock it’s on now and it’s been doing great for about 9 months. I’m with you I wouldn’t recommend this under normal circumstances. In my case I think it still thinks it’s attached to its baby stock.
