Your rear bar is mounted directly to the frame rails. If you have an impact, the force will go directly into your frame rails, into your chassis and your seat. A small crash would ruin your inire frame. I would build a bash bar, or at least something that takes some of the force in case of an accident.

Correct me if I'm wrong but those tabs on the fuel cell aren't necessarily designed to support the weight of a full fuel cell. They're designed to hold the cell in place when it is resting upon something else. They're hold-down tabs, not necessarily support tabs. I would want to run a member across the bottom to bear the load of the cell just to be safe when you hit a bigass bump with a full tank and don't rip them out of the tank.
@nathanrose3006

E Anderson yeah this is true those rear tabs will for sure break under a full tank. Even half a tank after a while it will break

E Anderson is correct. I installed that exact same tank style and didn't want the tabs in my way and was surprised how easily I was able to break them off, Definitely not designed to hold the weight of the tank.

I was told by my certifier (we need to get our cars checked after modifications over here) that those fuel cells should be held with straps and those tabs often crack and fall off.

Is he not putting a floor pan in trunk? I have no idea what I'm talking about but to me it seems like the cage and floorplan should be finished and then install the fuel cell and battery, so that there is something to mount it to. Seems a lot easier than making support brackets for everything when he could make one big support bracket called a floor.
@vincelamarche9686
@vincelamarche9686 6 жыл бұрын
Those tabs will not support the tank if you fill it and drive it often. I am constantly fixing them for the ricer crowd. You have to have some sort of support system under the tank. The tabs just keep them from sliding around. I have beefed up the tabs and connected them front to back and have not had any of those come back yet. It does not take much to support the tank, some 1"X2" structure and some sheet metal. You could trim off the sump and weld on some flat aluminum plate in its place since you will be using the BMW pump.

100% agree with both of these comments. I would run two bars either from side to side or front to back. And don't leave them metal on metal, even those big aluminum tanks on semi trucks have a rubber strap that insulates the tank from the steel mounting brackets.
@BlakeMcBride
@BlakeMcBride 6 жыл бұрын
You need to have straps over the top as well. And rubber isolate it correctly. Aluminum work hardens quickly and will fatigue and fail. Hopefully you're going to put a firewall of some type between you and the fairly fragile aluminum box of fiery death mounted behind you next to an ignition source (battery) also. There are a lot of suspect decisions on this build, but what you're doing here CAN KILL YOU even in an accident as minor as the 350Z debacle. You need to do more research and less winging it, I think a lot of us would like to see you survive to build more dumb shit.

Just a thought about the tank mounts... Surely the tank is supposed to sit on a flat floor / beams, and the tabs just hold it in place... The tabs are deffo gonna eventually fracture with just those ally tabs holding all the weight of a full tank... You could weld in two support beams from front to back brackets on the frame at this stage dead quick... Great build though....Keep it up...!

The rear bar needs to be more like a bashing and have break/weak points. If not in a crash it will mangle your frame bad. The idea of the bar isn’t bad, it just needs to be adjusted. You could move it more inside the car and the build a bashing from thinner metal and mount it to it. You’d also have more support for your fuel cell! You should make 2 straps underneath to support it - those tabs will shear off over time

I would change the rec tubing that connects the frame to your bash bar. The reason being that in the event of an accident your frame will 100% twist. There is a reason bash bars are made to be sacrificial. the bars take the impact and crumple instead of forcing that energy forward into the rest of the chassis.

Hi Chris, im Loving the build! I have to agree with a lot of the comments on here, that even a small shunt in the rear will bend that bar and rip the fuel cell which is not worth thinking about if your inside it if this were to happen. also those tabs are to keep the cell secure from movment and not to hold the entire weight of a full tank i would think. id do a rethink of the mounting of the cell before you fully weld it up! Keep up the good work though!

you may need to soft mount the tank where it bolts to the steel because the vibrations. Steel on aluminum contact could potentially wear a hole in the aluminum tank due to aluminum being much softer mixed with the reciprocating effect from the vibrations produced by the vehicle while being driven. This could be avoided by adding bushings between the contact points

Shouldn't the underside of the trunk frame rails be detachable where you cut them? Weld plates and bolt them together? If the car gets hit it would be less hassle rebuilding that bit instead of being tied to the frame.
