THERE ARE 3 COMMON SOUNDS THAT MOURNING DOVES MAKE:
SOUND #1:
The easiest sound to identify is a song given by males trying to attract a mate. Listen for a low “coo-ah, coo-coo-coo.”
Many people describe this song as hauntful or sad. In fact, this bird got its name because its call is so mournful.
Many people confuse the Mourning Dove’s song with an owl. I know I did at first!
SOUND #2:
The second sound you may hear is produced by paired males. It’s given while nest building or when trying to attract their female to the nest site.
Listen for a three parted call that sounds like “coo-OO-oo”, with the middle note being highest.
SOUND #3:
When they take off or land, Mourning Doves make a loud whistling noise. That sound comes from their wings!
It’s thought that these wing whistles help warn other doves to the presence of a predator.
Mourning Doves are common visitors to bird feeding stations! These birds are widespread and are found throughout most of North America!
Look for them perched high up in trees or on a telephone wire near your home. They are also commonly seen on the ground, which is where they do most of their feeding.

I spent about 41 years of my 43 wondering what type of bird it was that sounded this call around Houston, and then it finally occurred to me to look up local birds and their calls on KZbin, and now I can distinguish 4 whole bird species that are around here. 🤣 Mourning Doves, Grackles, Blue Jays and Mockingbirds that mimic car alarms. 🤣

The first time these doves appeared was over two decades ago, the day after some very heartfelt praying. Sobing as I finished, I asked God for a sign of hope, and said aloud, "You know me God, it has to be something obvious, like a dove." The next day I discovered a pair of mourning doves nesting in the planter outside the kitchen window. We now have several nesting sites between the front and back porches. Last year our little yard in Huntington Beach, CA produced 16 new doves.

We hear all of these sounds at our house (just northwest of Pittsburgh). We live in an old Victorian house with deep window sills, where the doves like to nest throughout spring and summer. We have had their offspring and then their "grandchildren" nesting here in the ten years we've lived here. Such beautiful, calm birds. (Not always very BRIGHT, but beautiful.) :)

I actually love the sound of #1. Especially in the spring time. There is a male sitting on the fence of my neighbors deck right now making that sound. He seems like a young male. When I let my dog out, the dog eventually saw him and charged like he was going after the bird. The dog couldn't get to him though because of the deck fence. The bird flew a short distance and I heard that wing sound. I often wondered why that sound was. Now I know.

I have 8 pairs of mourning doves. Weirdly, I had one pair that sat on the balcony railing next to my kitchen window at three separate times in the past 5 years, one pair of doves would make sound #1 the 3 different days I had to euthanize 3 of my cats. The third time caught me off guard because at that moment I didn't realize anything was wrong. But it alarmed me, I went into my bedroom and saw that one of my cats was in distress. I immediately drove her to emergency. She passed a few hours later. I was in shock and when I got home the same 2 doves were still sitting in the same place on the railing just looking at me. It felt like they were offering their condolences. I'll never forget those 3 experiences. I have one cat now and they've been told by me that they are not allowed to let me know in advance... They are a lot of fun to watch and I spoil them with special seeds everyday, twice a day. I'm bribing them🥰

We had mourning doves around us, but I grew up believing, like you, that I was hearing an owl. And,❣️ I've been hearing these beautiful sounds a couple of times like a week ago or two and I thought it was a owl and recently I watch a video the other day and I heard the same sound in her video because she had her window up and I looked in the comments and saw someone comment and said she loves the sound of Doves and then just now not too long ago I hear the Dove making those beautiful sounds again and my spiritual team told me to look up the sound of the Dove it gave me the meaning (spiritually) and I came across this video I love this.🙏🏾🖤💋❣️

From the time I was a toddler, Mourning Doves nested in a tall Arborvitae tree right outside my bedroom window. It was so relaxing to wake up to this gentle cooing. Wish we had them where I now live.

This brings back wonderful memories of having two doves under the trees in our yard. Being a kid, I could hardly wait to go outside and see them every morning. I heard all three noises - lovely. I still love all birds, 50+ years later. Really enjoy this channel. Thanks.

Heard these every morning growing up in Renner, South Dakota. They always give me a feeling of sweet nostalgia. Clear blue sky, sweet green grass and the gentle song of the mourning dove 💚🤍💙💫

I decided to set it as my alarm, and it's reminding me of the good old times😢 Nowadays I've never heard it, and I didn't realize that one day it was the last time I've ever heard this bird

I feed dozens of Doves in my backyard, and while on my window ledge you will hear them make a singe "WHO" sound as a warning to other Doves. I'm in NW PA and many of the ones I feed will sit on the same ledge and let me stand there and 'talk' to them, and almost all of them will let me hang out the window and talk to them as they casually without any fear, roam around looking for seeds I toss to them (millet and sunflower hearts/chips) It's amazing they trust me as much as they do, and the reason I talk to them is to calm them, and let them know it's just me. Some will even fly up to a perching stick near the window after they see and hear me. They are very intelligent, and also very aggressive... They will snap their wings and strike each other if too close on the feeding ledge. I am so lucky to have them around. Thanks for the nice video.

We had morning doves as pets growing up and in the neighborhood I live in we have a ton of them. She kept saying it was an owl and I told her it was doves. She didn’t believe me until I shook a pine tree that the sound was coming from and a dove flew out lol. I had them in my kitchen. I know the sound.

Ihink these just claimed the spot of my favorite bird! I hear them all the time (I live in central Maryland) and thought that they were owls too! And I thought they were pigeons for the longest time when I’d see them! They seem like such calm, lovely birds 🥰 Thanks for the video!

We hear these birds usually in the spring and summer. They just recently started chirping again and I am so happy I found your video to tell me what they are. It’s interesting that they make noise at night. We live in Anaheim California in a residential area. Thanks for the video!
