Mouth cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in India, largely due to tobacco use. Dr Nidhi Patni, Director, Radiation Oncology at Narayana Hospital in Jaipur, explains that tobacco consumption, whether through cigarettes or chewing tobacco, is a leading cause of mouth cancer. Another lesser-known cause is poorly fitted dentures or sharp edges on teeth that repeatedly injure the same spot in the mouth. Such consistent irritation can lead to sores that do not heal and may be signs of cancer.
If you notice persistent sores, loose teeth, or pain around a particular area in your mouth, it's crucial to consult a doctor immediately. A biopsy performed by a doctor can confirm whether cancer is present. Fortunately, if detected early, mouth cancer is treatable. Initial treatment usually involves surgery to remove the affected area. Depending on the detailed pathology report, further treatment may include radiation therapy if needed.
Dr Patni urges everyone to avoid ignoring these symptoms and to steer clear of tobacco to reduce the risk of mouth cancer.
