Mouth & MacNeal - How do you do (Austrian TV, 1972)

The Dutch singing duo Mouth & MacNeal was founded in 1971 by Willem Duyn and Maggie MacNeal and achieved success throughout Europe with their "middle-of-the-road sound". In 1972, they achieved international fame with their song "How Do You Do?". Jeanette McKinlay and Peter Petrel covered the song in German under the name "Die Windows" and made the song a top hit in Germany. The follow-up single "Hello-A" spent several weeks at No. 1 in the German single charts in 1972. In the same year they released "You-Kou-La-Le-Lou-Pie", another Top 20 hit. In 1974, they represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest and won 3rd place with "I See a Star", just behind the winning song "Waterloo" by ABBA and "Sí" by Gigliola Cinquetti. Unfortunately, the duo split up shortly afterwards. Mouth formed the duo "Big Mouth & Little Eve" with his new partner Ingrid Kup and died of cardiac arrest in 2004, while Maggie MacNeal went solo from then on.
Spotlight was a music programme for young people broadcast by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) between 1968 and 1978. It was the equivalent of Beat Club or Musikladen in Germany.

Ich war damals 12 Jahre und musste auf dem Weg zur Schule an einer Kneipe vorbeigehen.Schon Morgens saßen dort Gäste drin und How do you do lief in einer Lautstärke, das es bis draußen zu hören war. Damals wurde es ja noch auf Wurlitzer Musicbox gedrückt.Top Nr. 1 unvergessen. Ich ging mit mein Vater auch mal in Kneipe und durfte es dann auch mal drücken. 3 Lieder waren für 50 Pfennige, glaub ich mich zu erinnern.

I listened to a youtube video of "Top 20 songs from 1972" and this was on it. I've been humming it ever since. I remember it from yesteryear, remembering that it got a lot of airplay, but I don't think I've heard it on the radio once since then. It went to number 8 on Billboard and was on USA's Billboard for 19 weeks.

When I was 12 our school had a talent show, I asked my mom to make me 2 hand puppets, one boy and one girl. The puppets were silly looking like Fraggle Rock characters. I had a cardboard “stage” I hid behind, I played this song only I sped it up to 78 instead of 45 and my puppets sang it to each other! I don’t think there were winners chosen but I did get picked to be on a local TV station with kids form other schools! It was fun and that’s all that mattered!

I think this is a perfect example of the best kind of little love song. It reminds me of a love song by the Box Tops in the '60s. Two lovers want to get out of sight somewhere, where there's nobody else around, and make love. I take Mouth and McNeal as meaning, when they say, "na, na na, na na, na na, na", as meaning let's make love ALL THE WAY!, TO THE PINNACLE AND EVEN BEYOND!, but there are words we can't say publicly, so we call it na, na na, na na, na na, na, and people will know what we mean! So the loving we do under cover, we can, in this way, talk and sing about in public, with the same joy we had in doing it! THIS is what I get in this song as Mouth and McNeal do it. I love it. I adore it.
