Your frustration is front and center is this video. Get new glasses ordered and being made (so something is coming) and continue the search. Funny how we go from glasses to mouthpieces. Glasses are how we see the world, that way we perceive it. And a mouthpiece is how we see the world through our saxophone. If the piece (or glasses) aren’t quite right, it alters that very comfortable view we used to have. (And worked hard to get!) And since they don’t make what you had before, it is a monumental search to recreate the comfortable place you once had, but lost. I feel for you, man. I am praying you don’t have any gigs come up that would be impossible with sunglasses. Anyway, Thank you for all you do. Keep searching. I have faith you will find it. And in the meantime, i don’t mean to say I enjoy your pain, but i do find your thoughts and experiences interesting. Sending more positive vibes your way. ❤

Hello Bob, didn't watch all of your videos related to that problem of yours but to me it sounds like getting into refacing for yourself is the only way to solve the problem. I had similiar problems as a professional player and it took a couple of years to develop proper refacing skills ... but eventually it solved these problems. I can now alter mouthpieces that I basically like and make them fit perfectly to my needs and to my instruments. No other refacer or mouthpiece maker in the world is able to fully understand or know what you are looking for and how it should sound and how it feels right for you. You are the only one that has that competence, so you should be the only one to do that work. It takes time but it's worth the effort. Best regards Jo

No. Bob. Do NOT get over it. You have YOUR sound, and you want that sound that you hear! I comprehend that! Keep the faith man! You'll find it!!

Funny. Timing is everything. I turned 71 a couple days ago. Still playing professionally after nearly 60 years at it. What you may be discovering, if you're anything like me, is that your body is changing. Our ears change too. And it's so subtle, these changes. You may find that those big open pieces, with stout reeds, begin to offer just too much physical resistance to keep up with. And your ears hear the result differently too. Especially in the upper end, where we lose our hearing first. Top gets brittle sounding. Kinda sucks. But we carry on. Don't mean to rain on your parade...just sayin'. Love the videos (and glasses!). May your journey through life continue to be a happy dance. (Sorry...just got back from seeing Wicked...loved it.)

The whole conversation about if a mouthpiece does or doesn’t matter is so nuanced - they matter to a degree. Like you shouldn’t be struggling to play on it, it should feel good to play on, and you should enjoy playing on it. Beyond that they don’t really matter. A new mouthpiece won’t magically make you better (unless you’re fighting the mouthpiece to play)

I totally understand Bob. I've played a variety of set ups and I've finally found a brilliant one for my playing situation. Yay! I'm the tenor sax player in a heavy metal jazz band though. I've just recently bought a JodyJazz super jet 7*, plus a gold plated power ring, with Boston Sax Shop 2.5 silver box reeds. I'm now getting the sound I always wanted! Huzzah! Now I can really focus on putting in more work. 🎈⭐🌈🎶🎷 Maybe try a JodyJazz Giant mouthpiece?

Those New Vintage Otto Links are not going to sound the same as your old piece. I know you have tried a lot of pieces but I think since you are used to the standard tone edge, you should trial more of those pieces. One of them has to sound close to your old one and then you can have the facing cleaned up if need be. Just my 2 cents after going down the mpc rabbit hole.
@KMerrellsАй бұрын
Yeah, I mean, mouthpieces (and gear, in general) is never going to do any work for you - ideally the best it can do is "get out of your way" - allow you to sound the way you want to sound with the least amount of fighting against your gear. I don't think you have to eat your words - practice gets you 95% of the way there, but once you're there, and it's time to take care of that last 5%, then yeah, gear is going to matter for that. So I don't think you're contradicting yourself, I just think that most of us enjoying your channel have to take care of a lot more of that 95% that comes from practicing, so our time and efforts are best spent in the shed instead of the store!

It's really frustraiting with the instruments and their physically. I sometimes think that yeah, classical guitarists have it easy, it's only a guitar and nylon strings. But then you need to take into account the humidity, the changes of the temperature, strings getting broken, oh damn it, it just sometimes really hard. Keeping my fingers crossed for you! I recent;ly got back to your live recording with OGwizdala and the rest of the squad, beautiful music, I simply love it, thank you a lot! Come to Poland!

This is a common problem I see as a repair technician, from people who play their set up to the ground. They just can't find something to replace it because there's nothing that feels and sounds like their set up that just bit the dust. Mental/ emotional/ sentimental and physical attachment is hard to break. I think playing a couple different mpcs is fine, couple instruments is also fine. Just don't put it on yourself to find "The One" in your set up. There's no such thing, YOU are the one.

Seems like the Tone Edge you had was ether the norm at the time, or a variation for some reason. I know, and I'm sure this isn't news, but classical pieces tend to have less rollover baffle like your looking for. But they probably lack in other ways.

I feel like you’re going about this like it’s 1990. You don’t need to do this anymore! Buy an old link of the vintage your old one is and take it to one of the many fantastic mouthpiece people around now. Or take a shot at something new like the Ted Klum Florida or Sebastian Knox Traditional, where you can work with them to dial things in the way you want. ❤
@bobreynoldsАй бұрын
unfortunately, i have sent to people and the results are not there (yet). and all the new mouthpiece makers put way too much baffle in their pieces. i have custom pieces from several of them and the baffles are crazy high. they do this to satisfy a market that has demanded ever easier to play (less resistant) mouthpieces.
@trevorhoggАй бұрын
@ Oh man, that’s disappointing. Sorry to hear that. I hope you find the right fit!
@trevorhoggАй бұрын
@@bobreynolds This is my personal bias obviously but I think we share a similar taste in sound clarity and center… have you ventured into Sebastian’s options? They both have a much more gradual slope away from the tip rather than the high short baffle.

I think hard work doesn’t mean being able to play a 9* with reed 4. You certainly did the hard work, but the conclusión shouldn’t be being able to play certain equipment . Some pro players play softer reeds and that doesn’t mean they didn’t do the hard work. They also sound great.

Not the size/opening but rather the work to develop tone (and not expect that a particular mouthpiece or piece of gear “delivers” tone)
