Thanks again Andy for the insights. As someone who's lived in Penang, Japan, Australia and spent a lot of time Thailand and visited the rest of S.E. Asia, and as far as escape options in Asia, my dated reference very much aligns with what you just related. Before Covid I had planned on retiring is Asia, with my first Choice for being back to Penang, but long-term visa changes and challenges have all but dashed my hopes of returning to Malaysia. Also, the only challenge I faced years ago in Penang was the heat. For someone from the Northwest of the U.S. and Alaska I always felt a bit of malaise, and even friends who were natives said they found the climate in America, Europe and Australia "refreshing" and "invigorating" My other two considerations were Japan and Chaing-Mai Thailand, but while I remember Chaing-Mai being nearly as livable as Penang, I never felt as at home in Thailand as I did Malaysia and Japan. I did feel more content and at home in Penang and Japan than I ever did in America, but with Thailand after a few weeks I was always content to leave, where a few times I had to push back tears when leaving Malaysia and Japan with the dread of returning to the U.S. For climate and livability in Asia, (not considering language) my first choice would be Fukuoka Japan, but with language, culture and bureaucratic challenges in Japan Penang is still is my first practical choice, but Japan is worth a look if you can manage the visa and are arup for navigating the challenges inherent to Japan. Chaing-Mai I always thought was one of the most livible places in the world, And I like Phuket but I prefer the vibe in Northern Thailand. I've been looking at Sarawak, Seems quite livable, and reminiscent of Penang in the late 80's to early 2000's, and it's possible sneak by in Penang on a Sarawak S-MM2H Visa perhaps it's worth diving into. With all the changes in the world and visa challenges of S.E. Asia, A couple of years ago I started looking at Europe, I have friends who left the U.K. many Years ago and retired to the French Rivera and love it. One friend, Tim the host of the YT Channel 'Me and Mon Ami' has lived in Thailand,, America and other places around the world, and says the area around Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the best places in the world to live. Looking into costs, it can be considerable more affordable then the U.S. or U.K. and the long-term French Visa requirements seem much easier than S.E. Asia with much lower income requirements than Malaysia and a path two French Citizenship. I also have a friend from Denmark who after being partially disabled due to a medical condition had to leave Denmark as his disability would not cover the cost of a basic Apartment, and before Covid he moved to Vietnam and loved it, until Vietnam kicked out ex-pats during covid. He then went to Tblisi Georgia as it was the only place in the world open, and he fell in love with Georgia and the people there. He had a huge remodeled Soviet era Penthouse apartment with a lovely view for only $400 per month. He convinced me to escape to Georgia but I postponed that when the war in the region started. Prices are much higher now in Georgia but for those looking to escape the U.S. It's worth a look. I've been looking seriously into Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Italy. I've not lived in Europe as I have in Asia but on the surface much of the affordable side of Europe seems on some levels as appealing as Asia for escapees. Hope my 2 cents worth of reflections might be worth a read for someone. Cheers!

@@HuntaKiller91 Thank you for the insights and updates. Might you have suggestions for best places to live in Sarawak? I visited Kuching a couple of decades ago and it was charming, friendly and pleasant, but found Penang at the time a bit more convenient and interesting for westerners. It was also a shorter jump to other places in Asia and Australia, a place I had connections to, but looking online it seem Kuching is more like Penang was back then and if so would be possible more livable now with Penang having been over-discovered' and K.L. perhaps over-developed now. As I mentioned, after a time I found the heat even in Penang at time uncomfortable, for a while when rented an upper floor sea-front condo with elevated breezes and a pool to cool-off in the afternoon before dinner it was paradise. However when later I moved into an inland Bungalow with no pool I began to find the heat fatiguing. A fiancee and I used to escape to Cameron occasionally and most of time the weather was delightful and refreshing, and at one point I considered buying a home on a large plot of land there. My recollection of Kuching was that the temps and weather was more like K.L. rather then Penang for heat but perhaps it was just the time was there? Thanks for the Tip on Air BnB, I'll check prices. Air Bnb Prices in Penang seem to be about 2 to 3 times local long-term rates and not reasonable for long-term. I've been in contact with realtors in Penang and there's some amazing long term rentals rates on huge, luxury sea-view condos for less than you can find a shed or bed in a basement in America now, but without a long-term visa seem difficult. So maybe Sarawak would be easier in that regard? Good to hear about the Pan-Borneo Highway, and more things to do in Sarawak now. Having a car totally changed and upgraded life in Penang and I used to love to take road trips like to the East coast, Thailand, K.L and Singapore. I paid a friend in Penang who was sort of a car-dealer $800 as a non-refundable down payment U.S.to use a used car he had for 9 months with the option of buying or returning the car after that time. Worked out very well. Thanks again for the help, Perhaps we at some time can meet up in Sarawak.

I’ve been planning an escape to live in Southeast Asia for four years. The selection has definitely contributed to that Escape. I think at least for the next 4 to 5 years. I’m going to spend my hard earned retirement somewhere else. I’m already text to death here in the states. They’re not going to get any more of it. I’m looking forward to drifting around Southeast Asia, and finding my place, my place to relax after some extensive travel. I’m going to tune out the majority of the news back home while I’m gone. Just trying to tie a few loose ends before I buy my first airline ticket since I retired. I watched three of your videos this morning. I woke up extra early have to go do some blood work. I can’t even have my coffee or anything to eat. But I’ve been fasting anyway no food after 6 o’clock until 6:00 AM the next morning. I’ve been walking 6 1/2 miles every other day since I retired in August. I am down 30 pounds now about 15 more to go. Starting to feel quite a bit better except for a darn flareup of kidney stones last week. I’m better now. I’m with you about the election pretty disappointing. What’s real disappointing is how many friends and family rare they’re ugly heads.

Thank you, Taylor. I agree with most of what you've said, although I've never been to Vietnam, so that's out. While I love Penang, most of my friends live in KL, so it's the obvious choice for me once my MM2H is approved. All MM2H applicants are now required to use a licensed agent to apply for their visas. There are a number of groups on Facebook for both the western and eastern versions of the program; they can help find the licensed agents who will help the applicant each step of the way. It can be a confusing, to say the least! BTW, your coffee has been ordered. Finally, my condolences on your loss. I lost my brother while I was in Malaysia 2.5 years ago so I know how difficult it is, especially so far away.

The infrastructure in Thailand is excellent. I’ve lived in Bangkok and I now live in the countryside. Roads, power, water, internet - it’s all good. Thailand will stamp tourists in for 60 and this can be extended 30 days. It is easy to stay as a retiree indefinitely if you meet the financial requirements. Vietnam doesn’t have a retirement visa. If you stay long term then you are manipulating some other visa and possibly making 90 day visa runs.

One of the best videos for the topic discussed. One of the criteria that is important to me is air pollution. Lived in Jomtien, just 2 hours from Bangkok. AQI level can be nearly as high as Bangkok during the burning season - many get quite sick, or worse. One year was enough for me. Loved Thailand and the Thai people, and am going to return occasionally - going to Phuket for 5 nights in January - but Thailand just isn’t for me long term. I have just returned from Kuala Lumpur last week. Spent 6 days in the city on Jalan Ampang, then 3 nights out at Sepang. It was an epic trip (also an epic race). Back to air pollution, the 3 times I have visited K.L., air quality has always been good. I am not sure yet if it will be Malaysia for my second home, as I really love Indonesia. I don’t have any plans to visit Bali, but I already have a trip to Lombok scheduled in February, and also in October next year, so will have a good look around. Next month I will be in Jakarta and also will visit Bandung for the first time. Seems that Indonesia has made visas a little more accessible with more options. As for the condo in Florida, maybe you have already considered the online companies similar to Zillow. I sold a home in Florida in 2021 with them, and couldn’t have been more pleased. I understand that they might not be active any longer, but there are a number of alternatives. Your videos really are great. Thank you

Andy.. most doctors are locally trained now.. they use to be trained in the UK.. but in the last few decades.. Malaysia has develop their own medical institutions.. in fact other surrounding countries are sending their budding medical student ''for skill nurse to surgeon'' to Malaysia and Singapore.. in fact Malaysia and Singapore has develop a good reputation for producing medical personal at a fraction of the price people if people from other Asian countries would otherwise have to pay if they were to go to the west.. many said some aspect of Malaysian medical care infrastructures is actually better organised.. and far superior.. in Malaysia they are not too fanatical about making huge profits like they do in the US.. and fleecing sick people in the process.. its something to do with their concept of hospitality and Islam.. so they claimed..

In Malaysia if there is a case of one dengue fever reported and someone is already hospitalised, local health authorities will be alerted and the whole housing area will be fumigated with dengue mozzie spray..its safe for humans. Hi Taylor! Sorry to hear about your brother's passing. Sad indeed. On my short list of SE Asia places for my future ExPat locations is the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Manila. I have seen other channels talk about it well, and lots of western food in that location with solid infrastructure there. The others are KL, but then you mentioned to me last time to check out Penang. That wasn't on my radar till you mentioned it. I will do more researching on it. My "Break Glass in Case of financial Emergency" is Da Nang. However, I might do research a bit more on Cambodia via Jeremy and Clair's channel. Thanks for the link. Cambodia might slide under Da Nang as most affordable on my list. Oddly enough I am not a big fan of SE Asian food, so I will need to have some western food at my disposal due to stomach issues.

I am looking at places to retire when i am 67. Bali looked very attractive but just in the last few years it has exploded with development and the prices have risen a lot. It seems to have lost its paradise charm although one can still live there for much less than in the US, but the issues of traffic and air quality are becoming an issues. And of course there is the language barrier...

I've been researching a move to SE Asia for 4 years. Of the few expat Tubers in PH who do travel anywhere they all are amazed how nice Thailand and Malaysia are. They talk with their Filipina about moving but then nothing happens. Even within PH few travel, but a couple who did try a cool location like Baguio they say it's wonderful and "We should move here" but never do and go right back to complaining about the heat. As far as I can tell PH is mainly for guys who want to meet a Filipina online, get picked up at the airport, drive to where her family lives and there they stay. PH is maybe the most expensive SE Asia country after Singapore. Infrastructure near the bottom, most places have a lot of trash, loose dogs, roosters, karaoke. Medical is not the best. The tourist numbers really tell the story. PH gets 10-20 times fewer tourists than Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia. For older people medical can become an on going thing. Emergencies and on going things are not things I'd want to travel to another country to handle. So "for major things" and going to another country is kind of delusional. It has to be Goldilocks event to enable travel.

Just because PH was an American colony, it is not equal to America. Basically, vloggers can lie too to increase viewership.

G'day Taylor, The last time I checked, Vietnam issued 90-day tourist visas for Australians but no long-term visas. It should be the same for Americans. Expats in Vietnam do visa runs. There are almost no restrictions on property ownership except that only a certain number of apartments in any building can be owned by foreigners. Sorry for your loss.

I live in 3 different countries: USA - UAE - Malaysia ON & OFF according to project schedule base 😅. No PERMANENT stay per location 👌🏻 Happy living in Malaysia, bro....😎. It's a STABLE peaceful country, less crimes rate. Whenever choosing place for permanent stay, THINK ABOUT SAFETY FIRST. Find a country with strict crime law. MALAYSIA law not allowed it citizen or foreigner owning guns or any weapon. Anybody found guilty having a single bullet kept with them, they going to be sentences to whole life in prison or death sentence. This makes people shivers to perform such a crime act, even though some criminal smuggle guns from Thai border but once they are found and captured, end of life. If you had have budget minimum USD 1,000/= , you can live LAVISHLY in Malaysia for a single person budget. If you have USD 12,000/= it's more than enough to live stay and survive for one year in Malaysia. Having USD 120,000/= it's enough for 10 years survival in Malaysia 😅. I d been travel around the world and still Malaysia is still the best place compared to other countries. Think SAFETY FIRST and AVOID staying from CRIMES areas as Los Angeles crime rates is 7 times higher daily...u can't guarantee your safety with the unexpected events... Take care. Any problems with crimes, just go to the nearest local police station and they are kind enough to assist you👌🏻

@@amerfilmstudios9292 Whoaaaa. I haven't heard this before about the punishment for having a gun or even a bullet. That's kind of terrifying to think how you could possibly be framed by someone just slipping something in your bag on the sidewalk and then causing a scene and accusing you of something. Makes me want to put locks on my zippers and pockets.
@amerfilmstudios9292Ай бұрын
@@all4fitz exactly 💯%. Even my backpack bag locked with mini padlock but that is due to there are pickpocket hanging around at mostly crowded MRT train stations. The best is wear cargo pants with zippers or button as I use to for precaution.

How would you get an easy visa in Vietnam? I don't think so.
@andrewtaylor4558Ай бұрын
No but I know people from other countries who do live there.
@kitty_s2345628 күн бұрын
@tb - you can apply for an e-visa to VN & it will give you 3 months. After that, you need to do a visa run or use an agent to do it for you. I've heard of ppl living for years in VN by doing regular visa runs.

Can you talk about your plan for healthcare as you get older? It seems like insurance will stop covering or become extremely expensive once we reach around 70, and most dont cover pre existing conditions. Even though the hospitals are cheaper there, i still dont think its reasonable to expect most people to be able to cover something like cancer or a bad car accident without insurance. So im a little worried about what happens there when we get older.
@andrewtaylor4558Ай бұрын
That is a big issue. There are always public hospitals though which are much cheaper. I got a term Health Insurance policy before I was 70. It lasts till I’m 80. If I live that long, I’ll worry about it then.

Hi there, thx so much for sharing your thoughts for those soon be retirees who are feeling 'stuck' living in the US. Like u said, its not hard to move out of the country. All it takes is a little courage and a receptive mind...I will be joining u at KL soon 😅...Condolences to the loss of your brother

Like you I can no longer afford to live as a retiree in my home country (UK). I guess you are a city dweller at heart but I was wondering if you could offer any thoughts on living in a more rural area, on the very outskirts or KL, say, or in a smaller town. Like you I have a house to sell, too. Inspirational videos. Thanks. Steve P.

I like Malaysia for its rich cultural diversity, delicious food, and stunning natural beauty. The friendly people and the affordable cost of living also make it an enjoyable place to be, along with the modern infrastructure found in major cities. However, I dislike the huge temperature difference from outside to inside, in aircon places (malls). Political instability and the limited public services in rural areas are also concerning. Additionally, social issues like racial discrimination (more among Malaysians) and environmental problems can be frustrating, and I find police bribing and corruption troubling, as they undermine trust in law enforcement.
