What is the difference between love and attraction? Can you fall in love with someone you don’t initially get along with?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright compare the many couples from Enchanted, particularly Giselle and Edward and Giselle and Robert. They talk about what love is and why the classic love at first sight and true love’s kiss tropes don’t work. They discuss what it’s like to play a cartoon character in live action, and why Amy Adams nails it. They’re excited for Enchanted 2 and what Giselle and Robert’s relationship looks like years later.

And in the small snippets she gets of his character from their interactions she can tell he'd be a great man / is what she is actually looking for. 1) he's romantic (he introduces Giselle in very big, passionate terms.) 2) he's not afraid to commit (getting married after a non existent courtship. 3) he doesn't play games. (he's starting to clue into the Robert/Giselle romance and instead of flirting with Nancy he keeps an eye on them.) 4) he's willing to accept advice/ influence from others, even if he doesn't like them, if it's the best course of action. (It's Robert that suggests true loves kiss and he goes with the idea) 5) he has great respect for women and isn't intimated by them being smarter or having power. (He is very deferral to Narissa, his step mother and Queen regent. He refers to her as mother. He only strip's her of her title / ability to rule for her evil deeds. If she had been decent I'm sure he would have sought her advice for running the kingdom.) 6) he's generous and caring enough to put the needs and welfare of others above his own. (When he tells Robert to kiss Giselle and after she's back he looks genuinely happy for them even though it means he has no bride. He could have also taken Giselle back to Andalasia without marrying her since that's where she belongs but instead sets her free.)

The things is: Robert was saying he was ready to marry Nancy because he believed he fully knew her. But as Giselle set up romantic things for her, Robert was surprised that Nancy enjoys fresh flowers and was absolutely down for the Kings and Queens Ball. He missed this whole entire side of her despite being with her for 5 years. Something so many couples do to each other. They think they know all there is to know and stop pursuing each other. They stop learning about each and just start co-existing.

Also, the person you love changes over time, just like you do. So you have to keep pursuing them because they're not 100% the same person you met in the first place. I was a born and raised city girl 15 years ago when I married my hubby. Thanks to life stuff, I've since become a homesteading country girl, crocheting, homeschooling, canning, and dreaming of a future where I have chickens. Hubby loving me used to look like going out to the movies and walking on the beach. Now it looks like taking me yarn shopping and letting me destroy the kitchen while I try a new pie recipe. :P

I feel like Robert and Giselle are much more on the same page than they appear to be. Robert insists on putting effort into building a solid, steady relationship. Giselle insists on putting effort into romantic gestures like going dancing and sending flowers and saying "I love you." Even though they direct their energies in different ways they both believe in putting the effort into a relationship.

One of the things I really like about the “That’s How You Know” song is that it basically goes through the different love languages. “Does he leave a little note to tell you you’re on his mind?” Words of affirmation “Send you yellow flowers when the sky is gray?” Gift giving “Does he take you out dancing just so he can hold you close?” Quality time and physical touch “Dedicate a song with words meant just for you?” Words of affirmation “Wear your favorite color.” Service i guess? “Plan a private picnic by the fire’s glow.” Quality time/service/gift giving And of the “he’ll find a new way to show you a little bit everyday” which I think is the key message to the song and to healthy loving relationships. Love is a choice, and you have to show your partner that you love them everyday, in whichever way they find meaningful.

I really like how Nancy wasn't portrayed as a jealous competitor. She was rightfully upset that her boyfriend had a half-naked woman in his apartment, but accepts and forgives his apology. When she realizes that Robert is Giselles true love, she puts her own feelings aside and tells him to kiss her. Although her ending is kinda cheesy, I'm glad she got a happy ending
@Justanotherconsumer
@Justanotherconsumer Жыл бұрын
My head canon is that she knows that Robert really isn’t that into her, but he’s a dad with a daughter who isn’t jaded and cynical. When you’re marrying someone with kids, you’re marrying the kids too. Being a mom to an adorable little girl who needs a mom in her life may be what both of them need and Robert is simply a convenient vehicle to that relationship who provides a lot of practical value and stability. Possible she’s also been hurt in the past and Robert’s practicality might not be what she wants, but that stability may be more valuable to her than the romance.

I will try to not to spoil but I was always sad at how Morgan spoke about Nancy. I understand her view as a kid not wanting her dad to date again, especially with someone he doesn't vibe with. However, when we meet Nancy she's really just a normal lovely lady, maybe unused to kids. A great step mother trope break. In the new film, it feels like they address that a little. She becomes one person Morgan can actually rely on in a fairy godmother ish way. It felt like a retro-active apology of sorts

One of my favorite things about this movie is that the pre-existing love interests AREN'T the villains! That's SO rare in a romance/rom-com. So often the main characters are attached to awful people and the choice in the end is simply to not be with a terrible person. But in this one, it wasn't that anyone was "bad", but they just weren't with the right person. It wasn't a black and white good/evil issue but just... this new person is a better match for me, and we're all happier with these other people because we're a better fit, not because the other one was a bad person.

I also like how even though we're mostly following Giselle as a point of view character, and Robert is maybe the more relatable one as the audience lives in the real world like him, neither of their perspectives on love and relationships are shown to be wrong/ignorant or completely compromised/invalidated. They just see two different sides to it, which are both important and have value. Like a lot of media will side with one over the other regarding its message and how it frames things - either the sunny optimistic character needs to be more realistic about the world and learn how uncaring and harsh it is, or the grumpy cynic needs to open up and learn to love and enjoy life. But neither character is entirely one or the other themselves so it avoids those flat archetypes (and falling into the worst parts of some tropes like the MPDG as they're helping/supporting and inspiring each other instead). So Giselle is able to navigate and understand the "real world" and find joy and beauty in it (while bringing some of her own from hers), and Robert lets her be more realistic with herself about her feelings and what she really wants. All that to say, I love this movie and it's easily up there for me in fun fantasy/fairytale movies where I can endlessly rewatch and find something new to appreciate and overanalyse each time, along with Stardust and Tangled. ♥️

Both Giselle and Robert make valid points about relationships during the Central Park scene. Robert insists that you have to take the time to get to know the other person before getting into a serious relationship, and that many impulsive ones can end badly, while Giselle insists that it needs to be romantic. For a relationship to be successful, you need to both work a building a solid foundation, and to let your partner know how much they mean to you.

Yes, the two biggest (and most damaging) myths about relationships are "Love at First Sight" and "Happily Ever After." Actual relationships take work, though they also won't take off without an initial "spark." And even after it does end up being True Love, it will still take work to maintain. Also, most of the time (not always, there are always exceptions), your first love does not last (or, at least, the initial first love doesn't: I have heard stories where people have re-met their first love years after the initial relationship ended, and ended up together happily long-term, after much growth from both), and that's okay. Usually first loves come at a time when you're both pretty young, and who you are and what you both want and need from a relationship ends up drastically changing as you're prone to having a lot of paradigm shifts at the time (this is what happened to Robert and Giselle, and, again, that's okay). I still to this day, in my late 30's, remember having a discussion about relationships (I was 19/20 at the time, and the other 4 or 5 girls were about the same age), and, when I told them that I hadn't really been in love before (was completely ostricised by my peers in the small town I lived in, possibly because they figured out I wasn't straight before I figured out I was bi, so, hadn't dated much) and that I DIDN'T want to marry the first person I fell in love with, and ALL of the other girls just gave me this look like I'd just said something absolutely INSANE. I just have come from a family with a lot of divorce and unhealthy (or even downright toxic) relationships (on both sides), and it taught me that way too many people just view relationships and marriage like a goal or points towards some final game prize, and I've always thought that that was unhealthy and didn't want that. Rather, you should want to stay in a relationship long-term (as opposed to "just being tired of being alone" or because thst relationship is convenient) and/or want to marry someone because you want them, and SPECIFICALLY them, to be in your life and with you romantically to the point that you could see yourself comfortably and happily doing things like growing old together.

Nathaniel was oddly satisfying as a character after he stopped simping for Narissa. She is so obviously manipulating him, but he just keeps falling for it through most of the movie. So it made me smile so hard when he finally stood up to her. And the fact that he was ashamed of what he had been complicit in doing, but still taking responsibility... Good on you, Nathaniel! You don't have to put up with that, and you can stand up and say, "No. I'm not going to do this, and I'm not going to protect you from the consequences of your actions. I always see that as Nathaniel ending a toxic relationship. One where a party thinks all the bad things their partner is doing is right in their own way, maybe they’ll change, its okay they’re doing it for me. The moment she said “worthless” to him is when he finally gets that he was always just a tool. If we see the scene where she acts pitiful and manipulates him into going to the real world, she’s actually giving him a hope of togetherness so his simping isn’t mainly a one sided crush. He really was led on by her numerous times until the real world changes his perspective.

I remember encouraging my college roommate to voice her opinions because she too never really let herself experience any of the emotions aside from positivity (even if it was manufactured). She was just so sweet and wanted to be liked and had this identity of being the good girl/the mature sibling/the responsible older sister. The first time she blew up at a situation I was grinning so hard. She stopped mid-rant and was like: WHY ARE YOU SMILING?!! And I responded: I’m smiling cause I’m so proud of you for finally speaking up. And from that point on she never had a problem telling me her opinions 😅😅. She’s a badass business woman and product designer now and I couldn’t be more proud of her.

The problem with Robert and Nancy's relationship is that Robert took practicality to an insane extreme imo. Nancy was asking for just a base of romance, just get her one bouquet of real flowers, not a freaking Pinterest e-card with flowers and a note that even your boss would consider distant. Nancy wanted to go out dancing and he didn't view the romanticism in it so he wasn't interested. He was FAR TOO practical and everyone saw it and called it out, which is why the secretary was like that in the scene. She wasn't insulting marriage she was saying that that is what a marriage without love becomes so does he really want to marry Nancy without loving her.

I love that they didn't feel compelled to make Prince Edward an awful character to give Giselle a reason to fall for Robert. He was ready to dispatch Robert, but only because he thought he thought he was holding Giselle captive. When he found out he wasn't, he dropped it immediately and didn't hold a grudge or become suspicious. When she started trying to test him by real world standards after her time spent there, he was refreshingly resilient. He didn't melt down or have a tantrum when Giselle wasn't singing back to him like she usually would. When she told him she wanted to go on a date, he didn't scoff or refuse, he was just like, "Of course! Whatever will make you happy!" When his kiss didn't wake Giselle, he doesn't waste time sulking, he just asks Robert to do it. Truly elevated, golden retriever boyfriend energy.

YES. The trope where the former love interest reveals themselves to be a jerk is called the "Disposeable Love Interest," and it's wonderful that they didn't use it here. Making the former/rival love interest just act like an asshole (sometimes seemingly out of nowhere) is supposed to be a kind of band-aid for the fact that the new couple is technically committing infidelity. It's like an emotional "Get out of jail free" card, where they say that what the new couple is doing is fine, because the former love/rival love "is clearly a jerk, they deserve it!", rather than acknowledging that real love, emotions, and relationships are complex, and, like another commenter said, people DO fall out of love sometimes, or just realise that they're not ultimately a good fit long-term.

@@travisboutilier2220Um, no? People aren't obligated to stay in a relationship or engagement, especially if they're not right for each other and it isn't working. If that's the case, it's better for them to mutually end it before they make any further, more serious commitments (such as marriage). As long as the break-up or calling off is respectful and mature, and there's no betrayal such as cheating, it's just a normal part of human relationships. Not everyone finds the right person the first time around, and we're not all mated for life. There is no binding contract for engagements in most cases. We're not in a Jane Austen novel. So why do they "have to stay with them"? Also, neither original couple is really engaged - Robert says he was planning on proposing to Nancy but doesn't, while Giselle and Edward immediately skipped to marriage and missed that whole period, so 🤷. Either way, I hardly think this film is seriously affecting people's decisions on their relationships to the point it "encourages them to go against their engagements".

I REALLY like that when Edward questions why Giselle was “thinking”, it’s not because she is a female and thus expected not to think, even in the fantasy world, it’s simply because NO ONE thinks in the fantasy world - I mean, Edward himself isn’t all that bright… I appreciate that they didn’t take the easy approach of turning Edward into a misogynist, because it means we can actually enjoy the character despite his naivety.

I mean, it depends, there are surely people who just do everything right naturally and who are maybe quite similar in certain things (values, how they feel about certain situations, how they handle them and so on) so they don't get in that much conflict. But a lot of relationships (like mine) need hard work. And when you don't have the opinion relationships should be great effortlessly you're willing to put in this work because of love.

Like animated movie princesses (full time animated) in RL could look different cz they're cartoons brought to RL is is expected they look different then in the movie. Edit: Is similar to how Disney didn't let the OG SnowWhite voice actress do anyother ttpe of work. I know this is late, but this is one of my favorite KZbin channels and I'm really worried about the sponsor "Established Titles". The Scottish government has made multiple statements that this is a scam and buying a plot of land does NOT make you a Lord or Lady, and that there's no proof you're actually getting a plot of land at all. As well, there's currently an investigation to see if the company behind Established Titles is actually doing the charitable work they claim to be doing (planting a tree for every order) as there's evidence that they haven't been doing this at all. Please don't buy from these people and I hope the folks at Cinema Therapy realize their being made to promote a scam.

Another thing I just love about Enchanted is the narrative that a couple breaking up because ultimately they are not the right fit for one another can happen in a really non-dramatic, respectful way. Robert still liked and reapected Nancy. Giselle still wished Edward only the best. They didn't cheat on their partners, noone fought or despised each other. Those were two couples that didn't belomg together, and everyone was able to remain friendly and polite. There are no villains in these break ups and honestly that's how it should be.

I hate a couple breaking up, nonsense, they are the right fit for each other. there's no point in respecting someone you broke up with. they cheated in my view, once you agree to marry someone, you stay with them. Okay, first of all, WE STAN DISNEY PRINCESS JONATHAN. 🤩 Second of all, when I was still in my abusive marriage, the lyric, "Everybody wants to live happily ever after," used to make me cry and I didn't really know why. I knew even then that "happily ever after" in the real world was complex and doesn't mean "happy every minute all the time". But I was making so many excuses for my abusive spouse and deep down I knew something was very, very wrong. And what I finally realized was that me saying "happily every after takes work," in this case, really translated to "I'm unhappy and that's just what life is like," and it doesn't have to be. I love this movie.

I really appreciate you bringing that up. I can definitely see opportunities for someone like Giselle being abused by someone positioning themselves as a princely savior type. I love that the moment Giselle is humanized in Robert's eyes is when she starts to get angry, because abusers HATE when their victims get angry or say no. And I love that Robert is the one to turn down Giselle's kiss at first because of the potential of betraying someone's trust. I saw in their James Bond video, Jono said "seduction is about persuasion ('you're gonna hafta try harder'), coercion is about getting someone to do something they don't want to do." With someone younger, they might be attracted to someone older but the older person should do what Robert does and think things through. Because in an abusers eyes, it's a case of "Isn't this what you've wanted since you were old enough to want?" With abuse, there is no place for 'want' because your agency and right to experiment has been taken away. That's why for predators, the victim can just be "the seductive party animal" and people will fill in the blanks. This movie was very healing for me since my abuse made me go from optimistic like Gisele to cynical like Robert. It's nice to watch Cinema Therapy and see what love, connection, trust, and respect look like. And its nice to see someone like Robert start to heal rather than become a Rick Sanchez or Bojack Horseman type.

Two other things I love about this movie: - Nathaniel has a happy ending and isn't portrayed as just evil, because having been manipulated so much he's seen as a victim too. Loved this gray portrayal. - After 5 years of relationship when Nancy "catches" Robert with Giselle she doesn't bring Morgan to school to have their "big girls time together". Treating it as if it was a favour to Robert. One would think that after 5 years she'd have a separate relationship with Morgan than the one she has with Audrey. And then there's Giselle who loves Morgan from day one, and everything she does for her is because she genuinely has an interest in her and having a relationship with her. I still love Nancy's character but I think Robert started loving Giselle after he saw how she behaved with his daughter.

I feel Robert has deliberately kept Nancy and Morgan apart for fear of having another mother abandon her. The whole point of taking her to school was to get to know her. @@kittikats Another thing, Morgan is supposed to be six. Robert has supposedly known and/or been dating Nancy since she (Morgan) WAS A BABY. There is no reason they shouldn’t have known each other far better. That, more than anything, shows how that relationship wasn’t going to work out. Whether it was Robert or Nancy, keeping such an important part of the relationship on the back burner is a big problem.
@cassandrasmibbo
@cassandrasmibbo Жыл бұрын
after repeated watching I realized that the point is that Robert never let Morgan and Nancy build a relationship until he's ready to propose. For Morgan, Nancy is just a reasonably nice lady who her dad spends time with when she's not around. From her point of view, Nancy isn't really a romantic partner of Roberts. Robert unknowingly built a wall around himself AND Morgan which prevents Morgan from forming bonds with Nancy. I mean, after five years? Morgan should be bonded to Nancy by now. Clearly Robert prevented that. So him telling Morgan he was going to propose to Nancy would naturally be a big surprise to her. Nancy is just some ever-present shadowy figure she barely knows.

As an aromantic asexual i don't experience these kinds of attractions or affections. But i like to tell people that love doesn't have to be romantic or lead to relationships. Love is something so abstract and one of my favorite interpretations was actually in Valerian (despite its mostly weak story) where the protagonist gets to know an entire planet's population and falls in love with their way of life and culture and language. Love to me is defined by what you are most passionate about. I mostly love stories and art, but I also deeply love my friends and would do just about anything for some of them. People have told me that it's sad that I've never "loved someone" which 1. is bullshit and makes me angry as hell and 2. I think it's much sadder to limit your understanding of the concept of love to affection, understanding and acceptance towards one person. Or to quote one of my favorite movies "I hope that whoever you are, you escape this place. I hope that the worlds turns, and that things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that, even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all of my heart, I love you. - Valerie"

If you fall in love with someone, cool. If you don't, also cool. Just don't try to force anything or deny your feelings. And one thing that a lot of us worry about: you're not broken for not loving someone romantically. Media likes to make love the be all end all of human experience, and that a life without romantic love isn't worth living. And that's bullshit. The love you give and you deserve doesn't have to have any one specific form, as long as it makes you happy.

It really sucks that there are still so many people in the world, (& ashamedly I was one of them, once upon a time), who think it's insane to be willing to sacrifice for someone you're not romantically involved with (or want to be romantically involved with), or that to deny it means that YOU are the one in denial😉😉😉😏. It feels like diminishing & even caging away what we are capable of, and the wealth of experiences we can have with one another. I'm not even aro, and I've deeply loved many people in a completely platonic way, and I cherish the relationships I've had with each of them. So you do you, try to laugh off the stupid & absurd, and I wish you the best of luck in life❤️ Thank you for coming to my Ted Talks

this is so great and i wish more people talked about it. i hate that society pressures young people that relationships are all that matters esp since i recently came to terms and accepted the fact that i am content to never get married. and also the fact that you don’t need to be in a romantic relationship to experience or have love?? there are so many different types of love and it all varies depending on the people loving and being loved.. humans are so complex so why do we keep dumbing ourselves down for the approval of a society that doesn’t actually care? 🤧

Yes! Platonic love is important too! Love for family, friends, and for humanity/strangers you don't know but can care for, babies and baby animals in general, your passions and hobbies can be a something to truly love too!

There's an ancient custom in the US just like the fake thing you said about Scotland! It's called being a landlord. It's exactly as legitimate as the "Laird/Lady" thing, because it's just a descriptor, not a legal title. Also the industry of souvenir plots is shady as heck. It's already a novelty certificate, but somehow they've managed to be needlessly dishonest about it.

The newest film is so good for looking at the love in a family the same way. Similar argument, deeper discussion.

Seconded, I love how it was more family focused, as opposed to fixating solely on romance, and I love Giselle and Morgan's respective journeys. However, it's not as memorable as the original film, and I'll probably never rewatch it again.

Another movie couple that would be good to analyze: Danielle and Henry from Ever After. A great “modern” retelling of Cinderella. I feel they’re another example of a healthy couple: Danielle brings Henry out of his comfort zone and challenges his earlier perspective of how the world works. And in return, he also shows that she has more personal worth than she gives herself credit for.

James Marsden did deserve a comedy Oscar, well said! Also I remember watching the dynamic between Alonso and Cruella in the live action 101 Dalmatians as a kid and my friend suspected that Alonso had a crush on Cruella and that’s why he put up with her meanwhile my theory was he really needed the money 😂. Having seen the relationship between Nathaniel and Narcissa, I realize my friend was probably right haha.

Part 2. I once complimented this coworker on his wardrobe. (We were engineers.) He explained, somewhat sheepishly, that he had a strategy. Once a year, he went to his favorite men's wear store, and had a woman clerk pick out three outfits; suit, shirt, tie. I felt sure he would make a great husband. He was self-assured, and dignified, but willing to take advice.

Fun fact: Robert's secretary is the voice of the animated Ariel, The Little Mermaid. Now rewatch that cringe scene and imagine Ariel saying it (6:30) 😂 she's become very cynical. Other fact: it's not the original Morgan. I don't know why. She looks about right 🤷🏻

Also, fun fact - the Morgan of the new movie is actually a different actress BUT the original Morgan - Rachel Covey - gets a cameo in a scene in the town square where she speaks to Giselle. It seems like she's behind the scenes now and doesn't act but the new Morgan seamlessly slips into the role and does look JUST like Rachel.
