The point where Malfoy goes for the huge sword strike makes sense to me, not from a tactical sense, but from a character sense. This farmer had been humiliating him, making him look ineffectual as a commander for the whole movie, and Malfoy's ego could not take that. He had won, the fight was over, and he was going to exact revenge for the insult of Mel daring to think he could match Malfoy.Yeah, sound tactics would be to kill the enemy then gloat, but what Malfoy did fit him as a character extremely well.

Telegraphing a strike (taking an extra-long swing) is something that annoys me about Revenge of the Sith. When Mace Windu has Palpatine cornered, he could have just thrust his lightsaber forward and ended it like he had planned (as a lightsaber is a laser, so a simple flick of the wrist can still make a cut), but instead he pulls his blade back, allowing Anakin to stop him.
@scholagladiatoria9 жыл бұрын

RogueEagle Exactly.
@honestbenny9 жыл бұрын
+Spar10Leonidas Problem is that Palpatine was acting there (if you read book Revenge of the Sith). He was only pretend to be defensless. He could finish Windu any time with Force, he was most powerful Sith Lord ever lived, legacy of 1000 years of Rule of Two. But he sensed that Anakin is coming and choose to pretend he is weak to make himself look as victim, confusing anakin and forcing him to defend him, turing against Windu. That was crucial point of getting Anakin on path he can't come back from. Mace Windu was able for short time to be able to stand toe to toe with Sidious in lightsaber duel because of his Vapaad form (Sidious was master of all forms) but in terms of Force he had no chance at all. Even Yoda was too weak to win against him. And Windu didn't finish him when he "disarmed him" (which was act) because he was a Jedi and showed great weakness- mercy. Well, Siths do not have that problem.
@Spar10Leonidas9 жыл бұрын
+Beniamin Szwaczka Even with all of that considered, it still didn't make sense from Windu's perspective to draw his sword back. I think that they could have done something different with the scene in terms of Anakin "stopping" Palpatine's execution so that it would not only make sense from a sword fighting perspective, but also from within the story.

Agreed with all your points. One of my biggest gripes, that you touched on, is that Mel's character would be getting the fingers on his tomahawk hand seriously chewed up, and probably losing a few of them. The number of exchanges they do, without him once getting hit in the hand is highly unrealistic, I don't care how good he's supposed to be with the hawk. Even if he blocked with the shaft, there's going to be at least a few occasions where the blade would then slide down onto his fingers.

One thing that should be noted beforehand is that Tavington is entering this battle already wounded after having been shot in the rib two days earlier, and his wound might have opened up again after being thrown from his horse. He was in pain, he was angry, and he was sloppy because of it.

Good points, I agree to all you said, and I also don't like those set up endings where the bad guy loses by default. The reality in life is that, regardless of what Hollywood has been trying to make us think (for specific social reasons that involve the bad guys winning a lot in real life and Hollywood wanting us to be stupid about that), the good guy doesn't automatically win a fight. This is one of the main reasons why Game Of Thrones became so popular: the director wasn't trying to save the "good guys", so it was very much like it is in real life.
@LaughingOwlKiller10 жыл бұрын
Good guys triumphing is not a Hollywood creation, stories since antiquity have done this. No one with any sense thinks that the "good" guy always wins, but that's why we see it in entertainment. We get to see the hero triumph over the villain because real life sucks. The problem I have with game of thrones is the least despicable character almost always loses. George R. R. Martin has a very dim view on the world, he believes only the "monsters" win, that everyone is motivated by greed/lust and if you have a shred of honor you are foolish.
@TheApocalypticKnight10 жыл бұрын
LaughingOwlKiller I didn't say it is a Hollywood creation, I said Hollywood is pushing that agenda for specific reasons. Back then the reasons were different (maybe a more positive outlook, or trying to avert people from becoming bad this way). As for Martin's view, I'm afraid it tends to be like that in real life. "Only the good die young", as the saying goes. And if you believe in Karma and reincarnation, I guess it makes sense that you stay in one life until you learn the lesson, which for the evil guys takes really long.

Hello Matt ! Thanks for reviewing that movie .I have two questions : 1) In movies, we generally see two great warriors fighting against each other and one of them finally wins the fight. What happened in real fights? i mean would the fight last so long between expert swordsmen of the past ? 2) Is it possible to cover this topic; cavalry duels light cavalry Vs Heavy Cavalry . I have read some accounts of lightly armoured skilled fighters successfully fought off heavy cavalrymen and i want a clarification because that seemed astonishing! .Thanks in advance ,take care :)
@scholagladiatoria10 жыл бұрын
There is rarely enough time or safety for two men to have a duel on a battlefield. There are plenty of examples from history of two champions meeting away from the rest of the armies to fight for honour, but in the middle of a battle, no! One of them would just get stabbed in the back by one of the opposing side.
@RoadrunnerMoose10 жыл бұрын
I'm not Matt, but I can answer your first question. Generally speaking a weapon-fight wouldn't take this long. Usually a fight would only take a few seconds, as soon as one guy makes an opening the other takes advantage and goes for the kill. What you've seen was a coreographed fight. It basically romanticizes a swordfight to help tell a story and show the conflict between two fighters.
@ramisabreur796110 жыл бұрын

Great review on one of my favorite movies. I do agree that Hollywood throws in their dramatic effects all the time and we can almost call how the scene is going to play out early on. I am SO glad you brought up the point of battle field conditions and emotion affecting technique. IMO too many people think that, regardless of the venue, the opponents in a fight should be following trained techniques. Anyone that has been any type of scuffle knows that a fight is anything but planned. You cannot expect to stand, perform "kata" and win the fight. Again IMO, the best trained will take those techniques and adapt them to the situation at hand.

In late June 2000 I finished the first knife I ever made. Later that day I went out with a group of friends to see this movie and we had quite a chuckle. The knife Heath Ledger's character pulls out of his boot in the scene where he dies looked nearly identical to the knife I had just made.

I mean it does make sense given the history set up between the characters. Having the bad guy have a fatal moment of hubris isn't too unbelievable. I mean for months they've been fighting each other's forces and it's not crazy to think that Sword guy wants to put a lot of anger into his swing.

If you consider a straight on cavalry charge against 100s of men with what appeared to be an argentine 1891 Mauser (which fired a 7.62x53mm round, and was one of the first smokeless powder rifles ever made) and a Gatling gun realistic, not to mention how the two main characters who were in the front of the cavalry charge happened to be the last guys to fall. The single combat wasn't as bad but was a bit robotic.
@aaronmills956810 жыл бұрын
LogicBeforeFaIth The rifles used were 71 Mausers (or rather 71-84 Mausers made to look like 71's). They were single shot breachloaders firing the.43 Mauser black powder cartrige. This meant lots of smoke to add to the confusion of battle. So, as proven in the American Plains Indian Wars and African Zulu wars undisciplined troops with single shot rifles can be overrun by "primitive" warriors. Of course the battle was settled by the Gatling Guns as it often was in the two wars I just mentioned.
@Ennio44410 жыл бұрын
LogicBeforeFaIth The Charge of the Light Brigade? It has happened. He was talking about the coreography aspects of the film, however. The "Charge to the Death" bit, I've always seen it as that, a charge to the death. Katsumoto understood that Japan had already went passed the point of no return, his way of life, his worldview, his valours, all would be lost in the blast of Maxim guns, Western uniforms and conscript armies, capitalism and liberal policies. I guess he saw no point on keeping on, he was fighting to make the Emperor see the error of his ministers' ways, but now he had convinced himself that victory was impossible, both militarily and morally. So I think the charge makes sense. What's unrealistic about The Last Samurai is the Samurai armours. They look too "cool", they aren't extravagant enough.
@deepsouthredneck110 жыл бұрын
Aaron Mills I haven't saw the movie in years so I figured I would have that detail wrong, but the rest still stands. If I'm not mistaken the 71/84 model was converted over to magazine fed. Hey Matt, I have one movie swordfight that I find somewhat interesting. The fight I am talking about is the Black Knight vs the Green Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail (at least the portion where they duel each other with swords). Yes, it is a comedy film. I just found this scene actually somewhat realistic, as the knights do use some realistic moves that are not normally seen in other media (movies, games, shows, etc.). In one part, after the Green knight pushes the Black Knight's sword down, he bashes his enemy with the pommel. The Black knight half holds his sword to give him extra leverage against the green knight's sword before pushing it back up and hitting him with the pommel in the stomach before bashing him on the ground before trying to stab him. I found the fight interesting as we do not normally see sword fighters attacking with other parts of their sword aside from the edges and tip, as everything on the sword is a weapon, including the handle. Even more interesting (and somewhat funny) is that this is coming from a comedy film (come to think of it, the Black Knight vs Green Knight scene is actually gritty, as it is not a smooth and clean fight light most other fights) and yet it has some realistic fight moves that we do not see in many other movies, including serious ones. My apologies for this being long. I wanted to go in depth.

this video gives me an interesting idea, what about an axe/tomahawk guard and pommel? I may be completely wrong but I thought musket balls would expand after they hit, drastically increasing the damage dealt by the shot. It is an old movies common thing, not to say, it is a rule, that villains have either to explain their complete plan to destroy the earth or how senseless all the resistance has been, because now the hero has to die. If the villain has any influence. Like Gert Froebe in Goldfinger. He explains all his plans to James Bond. When Bond asks "what are you expecting me to do", Froebe answers "I expect you to die, Mr. Bond." Shortest "villains last word to the good" - quote ever. And the best one.

yeah i agree the fighting was good but some spots could be better. love the movie anyways. for closing the distance what do you think is the best way? i would circle him to the left while trying to pass his weapon by.

Another great fight review mate. I hope I can see more of these from you. Here are some ideas/requests: 1. Inigo Montoya vs Dread Pirate Roberts from the Princess Bride (yes I know that´s quite a "Hollywoodish" fight but interesting to watch nonetheless) 2. Balian vs Guy de Lusignan from Kingdom of Heaven 3. Ned Stark vs Jamie Lannister from S01E05 of Game of Thrones 4. Jon Snow vs Karl Tanner from S04E05 of Game of Thrones Cheers :)

Can you review some fights from Princess Bride? It's silly, but maybe there is something worth talking about?

Hell, just seeing a man reload is almost unheard of in Holywood.

Awesome review. I do love this movie -it's one of ky favourites. I'd like to see some more reviews/ instruction etc on 18th sword combat. Maybe you couod review foght scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean? Perhaps the 3 way battle in Dead Man's Chest between Jack, Will and Norrington? :D

I'm going to recommend the duel with spears from Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. The only movie fight I'm aware of done entirely with spears from start to finish. Clip should be on movie clips

I play games like Skyrim and The Lord of the Rings - War in the North and I notice they often make a critical error when it comes to the classical viking-style round shield. As we know - these shields have a characteristic cup of metal in the middle, but when you look at them in many games (and probably lots of other media as well) the cup seems to simply be bolted onto the front of the shield as an afterthought and the back of the shield is blank save the handle for holding the shield. But the whole point of the cup is so you can have the handle "inside" the shield, rather than "behind" it. Perhaps this is something you could talk about.

Pistol used as a club, not a knife.

Att the beginning of the on-foot fight Mel Gibson did not have a knife, but his pistol. Then at around 8:07 he grabs a knife ... But do you think about throwing away the ramrod as he does at 2:07?

Could you make a review any of the Mask of Zorro fights?
@NorthernForge9 жыл бұрын
I agree, from the point of view of one who choreographs fights and also studies historical fencing, that is pretty good fight in an otherwise bad film. I particularly like that at the start of the fight Mel Gibson is actually using his discharged pistol - by gripping the barrel in his off-hand - as a short club, along with his Tomahawk. Oh and Mel's stereotypical, villainous, English opponent is played by Jason Isaacs. :)

Warplant Unfortunately they are mostly quite bad, though I really like the series.

I have a couple friends. One favours the baskethilt and the other did tomahawk and bowie for a while. He can win some times but usually gets hit in the hand. We don't throw in fights but throwing a tomahawk is probably the best option against a saber. It's fast and difficult to parry but no matter what causes an opening to get in with the knife. And I honestly prefer no off hand weapon with my axe. I can stay out of range and block and grab the blade or arm when I get the opportunity, and that's one of my favoured techniques with most weapons. It lets me get some quick cheap shots in.

i'm glad to see that charging a running horse causes no injury to the guy with the spear. how is anyone going to believe you can avoid the horse crushing you ? its about as believable as the film

Hey Matt, what do you think about duels in "Alatriste" ?
@giabread10 жыл бұрын
Oooh, I've always thought that Tavington (Jason Isaac's character) actually manages to cut through the hilt of the tomahawk rather hit it out of Martin's hand. Huh. Is that actually possible?

How common was an officer duel on a modern times' battlefield? While reading up on battles in ancient history, I came across e.g. Alexander the Great, who spend a lot of time riding around a battlefield looking for opposing aristrocrats. I imagine that killing the opposing armies leader or champion did strike the armies morale, but did this happen also in modern times?
