I can say that one thing the movie [sorta] kept in common with the book(s) was the relationship between Wolf & Diane. In the book(s), they’re an actual couple while in the movie Diane is Wolf’s love interest. It was confirmed that as Wolf & Diane were dancing at the Gala, Wolf had fallen for her completely as he gave her the ring back. It was nodded as an “indirect” proposal in a way. More or likely, they’ll be more than what they are in the sequel (if there is one).

One thing that you missed was in the final chase scene, when wolf does a driving trick called the heel-toe, where he steps on the gas brake and clutch at the same time

The fabled racing move that gives the pilot just that little extra bit of control of their careening ride. Speed is nothing without control, and heel-toe is all about that handle on the car as it goes through a corner.

Apparently, there are some subtle similarities and hints to Lupin III: The First (and the Lupin series in general, I guess) Lupin is Wolf, Zenigata is Chief Misty Luggins, Fujiko is Diane, and Jigen is Snake. The way the cops swarm with Misty at the front is much like Zenigata and is police force. A really wonderful film with loads of references and easter eggs.

Wolf being the counterpart to Lupin makes even more sense if you consider that the word "lupine" means "wolf-like".

I just watched _The Bad Guys_ in theaters when it came out, no joke in theaters after I haven't went to a movie theater for 2 ½ years straight and it's by far one of DreamWorks best animated films since the How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda films. Everything from the story, the voice cast (Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Zazie Beetz, Anthony Ramos, Richard Ayoade, Lilly Singh, etc.), and the comedy were phenomenal but it's the animation for _The Bad Guys_ that impressed me the most, as it's vastly different than the CG animation seen in the previous DreamWorks animated films (e.g. Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar) considering that the titular characters, the supporting cast including the humans gives off a Hand Drawn Cel-Shaded look similar to the animation seen in Disney's _Paperman_ and _Feast_ and especially Sony Pictures Animation's _Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,_ which the filmmakers did admit the film was a huge inspiration for the animation for _The Bad Guys._ I also am getting a lot of _Lupin the 3rd_ and _Dragon Ball_ vibes for the designs of the characters, especially on the Police Chief. Even the same can be said for the upcoming _Puss in Boots: The Last Wish_ as the visual style is giving off a 2D/3D visual style so I'm excited on the future direction DreamWorks Animation is heading.

the way the police are in large numbers and the cars while reference The Blues Brothers feel more animated like the Lupine series car chases with the police and the chief. even the Chiefs speech about finally catching him reflects zenigatta

Reference to that too, alongside a lot of other Lupin references since the Creators did site Lupin III as major inspiration. One really good reference is the scene where Officer Misty tried to get into their car from her cruiser only to break away thanks to an oncoming vehicle.

The whole movie also takes a lot from the long running anime "Lupin the 3rd". The part where the chief grabs the car while leaning out the window in the opening chase is even a direct reference to a scene in Lupin the 3rd The Fuma Conspiracy.

You forgot about the ending, where Diane waited in the car outisde the prison in the middle of the desert for the "Bad Guys" to leave prison. It reminds me of Baby Driver, or maybe its also a reference to a different older movie.

During the scene where Marmalade shows the gang the video of Wolf saving the cat, I actually stopped to pause and read the comments and one of them said Wolf would make Dmitri Belyaev proud. I looked it up and this guy basically spent a good minute trying to domesticate silver foxes.

I believe the film was also heavily based on lupin III, especially in Wolf’s character. Lupin literally means wolf, they both wear a fine suit, and a scene from the beginning car chase where the chief of the police and wolf where talking face to face, when wolf pointed at the approaching truck and when the chief flails backward to avoid collision is a scene that was directly from Lupin III. It’s a nice touched added to this film.

Great observations, all, but my favorite part of _The Bad Guys_ is the art style, especially the ways in which eyes and mouths are drawn on all the characters. The rounded corners of the mouths tapering to the fronts of faces... they are kind of comforting in an odd way, and the eyes' style complement that.

When I was younger I LOVED the bad guys books. I read them all (and still do today) , and i'm so glad to see a film made about my faviourte book series. I love the animation style especially in the car chase scene at the start when the smoke comes out from under wolfs car. I love this movie and with the fact that most of the characters from the comic series are in it makes it 10 times better, even the minor characters like the news reporter. I absolutely recommend giving this movie a watch, and maybe even reading the books.

As someone who never read the book, Diane’s plot-twist as the Crimson Fox wasn’t surprising to me because of the dance between her and Wolf.
