We do a double feature of both the original (1978) Death On The Nile and the 2022 Kenneth Branagh remake. The original is an absolute gem that we highly recommend, the new one you can fully skip.

As someone that shares her birthday with Kenneth Branagh, I understand his need to be the center of attention in everything he does. Like, did we need a backstory on the mustache? No, but we're not the target audience, Kenneth Branagh is the target audience.

The 2004 version with David Suchet is actually quite good, but then again, David Suchet is my preferred Poirot, so I'm biased. Emily Blunt and Frances de la Tour are also in the 2004-version.

Certainly the most book accurate portrayals, yet not 100%. Nothing compares to the novels but Suchet is as close as you can get. You can't play a character for 24 years without becoming a bit of that person.

I made my own review of the new Death on the Nile that ended up turning into a 25 minute discussion on whether we should stop letting Kenneth Branagh direct movies for a while, and as someone who not only read all the books but also *double checked* for that video I can confirm there is no moustache backstory in the books and the woman he fell in love with doesn't exist. Hercule Poirot has exactly ONE love interest throughout all of the books who is mentioned maybe once or twice and is featured in one of the books (NOT THIS ONE). It's so frustrating like y'all said that Branagh seems to have just collaged together a bunch of random things that do absolutely nothing for the movie as a whole. Anyway, FABULOUS review as always!! I'm off to rewatch the '78 one again!

What I appreciate is that they really fleshed out the relationships in the og version while in the Branagh version they was just there, take our word for it. Also did we even need a backstory to his moustache? And that he had to play his younger self? I know he loves himself but he could barely play 30 when he was in his 30s

Hello there.Just look at the quality of photography and lighting back in this 1978 film. The direction, the screenwriting plot with the tension escalating and with the doubt as to who has committed the murders since they all have a motive, the performances of the actors and the powerful cast, the costumes, are all very well made.Imagine how much effort must have been done during reperage - location scouting in order to find suitable places for filming.Superb Movie based on a great book of Agatha Christie.I have to see the remake to form an opinion but I don't think it can be compared to the original movie as i hear from you. 36:53 btw very nice (posh) pronunciation ! 22:16 wine is probably speaking ... :-)

The original Murder on the Orient Express was one of my pandemic movie marathon watches is it was also fantastic! The dialogue was often witty and hilarious, the characters radiated charm, and it didn't feel like it assumed that I/the viewer was stupid. It's so paradoxical that the older version of both of these films feel more refreshing than their remakes.

I watched the remake of Death on the Nile and I agree, for as fabulous as KB tried to make the 1930s, it was boring and felt basic. Some of the costumes were nice looking but I didn’t die for them. It was the platonic ideal of the 1930s. There was no fun or camp; it just makes me even more excited for the knives out sequel. You know what I wish, I wish Tom Ford had directed Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Even if the movie was bad, you know that the costumes would have been beautiful to look at!!!

And the costumes were so muted compared to previous, and like for what?? Like the setting? Stunning. If the movie was just 90 minutes of all of the beautiful settings and only about 1/5 of the cast (you already know who's out) then sure. But everyone just looks like modern people who all like to "put a bit of a vintage flair in my outfits" not a bonafide period piece. And the acting is like watching wood planks

33:37 seeing what Ryan Johnson said on Twitter when he announced the title for Knives Out 2 “Glass Onion” proves why Knives Out is the reason Death on the Nile wasn’t very good. “Something I love about Agatha Christie is how she never tread water creatively. I think there's a misperception that her books use the same formula over and over, but fans know the opposite is true.” “It wasn't just settings or murder methods, she was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunnit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues” “When I made Knives Out, that's what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc - to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being…” HE GETS IT !!! He utterly utterly gets it

As someone who's read the book (and you're right in thinking the original movie is far closer to the book. There's no mustache origin story flashbacks there) the worst part for me was how the actual whodunnit aspect was handled. There's three really famous Poirot books that are known, not just because of how good they are, but because the reveal of the killers transcends the plot. One is Murder on the Orient Express, the other is Death on the Nile and the third I won't spoil just in case they make a movie in the future. In Murder on the Orient Express for example, (spoilers) you don't need to know anything about the plot to be surprised with who did it. It's the mystery where everyone did it. That's shocking on its own. Death On The Nile is meant to be the mystery where the two most suspicious characters did it. You read the book and think "well it looks like it can't be anyone else but these two, so since I have so much of the book left, it's not them". And then it is. In the new movie they simply weren't suspicious enough to not be suspicious. The original (by spelling out suspects, motive, facts of the case) manages to convey that far more effectively.

I really loved the 1978 version of Death on the Nile but was so disappointed by the 2022 adaption (skip it). I reminded me of the 1974 version of Murder on the Orient Express. Something didn't click for me with those films. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the 2017 version of Murder. All these films have many characters, but I think they're just handled poorly sometimes. You don't get invested in their individual stories or the overall story. Sometimes even the "Now I'll tell you how it was done" moment near the end of the film can feel too rushed. By the way, the 1982 version of Evil Under the Sun is also fantastic!

Didn't plan to watch the new movie until I saw your review pop up and I was like, "Now I have to watch this garbage so I can laugh along with you!" I also decided to read the book which I loved!! Right when the movie started I had to check I hadn't picked the wrong film. I was so confused as to why we were in WWI in black and white when you're meant to be in an opulent English estate. Then I kept getting the characters confused despite just reading the book since they were all mishmashed together. I get there are a lot of characters but that's kinda the point of Christie's ensembles. The more suspects, the more possibilities. I folded laundry the whole time watching so it wasn't a complete waste of time at least.

I absolutely adore the originals with Sor Peter Ustinov as Poirot! They are real comfort movies for me! I agree Evil Under the Sun is probably the most fun! The remake looks horrendous!!! There are a few TV movies with Sir Peter also.. they aren't as much fun sadly. I watched one recently that had Tony Curtis in and he gives one of the worst acting performances I've seen outside of a made for Scy-fy channel movie! Quite baffling!

The third film will be “A Haunting in Venice”, based on, or at least inspired by, the later Poirot novel Halloween Party, but set in Italy.

Oh, and in case you didn't know, those fantastic costumes were so fantastic that they won an Oscar!

I also just love 1982’s Evil Under The Sun even though 1978’s Death on the Nile is probably a better movie. The costumes in DOTN won an academy award deservedly but the costumes in EUTS were so wacky early 80s influenced they’re super fun if anachronistic. The new DOTN was sooo bad and I could never understand why it got such a high score from critics. You expressed beautifully why it sucked. Kevin Branagh has proved time and time again that he has NO sense of humor. How could Emma Thompson marry him??? Oh and the screenwriter also wrote Alien: Covenant. What?? Why did Kevin hire him? Senseless. Finally - I too love Avaryl’s pants!!

I laughed so hard when Armie Hammer and not Mia Farrow died. Did they have to scrunch awkwardly against the bar stool in death? It was such a weird way to die! Just fall on the floor, it's not that hard! 😵‍💫🙄 Ps: When I saw the OG, I could totally see Avaryl thirsting over both Maggie Smith's and Mia Farrow's wardrobes. Maggie Smith's for formal occasions and Mia Farrow for informal occasions.

I took your advice and watched the original and it was a delight! Angela Lansbury's double turban, the Bette Davis quotes, the gorgeous shots of the temples were perfection. I had already watched the new version before seeing your advice to skip it. It was nice to see I was not the only one truly baffled and underwhelmed by the choices made for the 2022 film.

What ever happen to baby Jane? She took a trip on the Nile! If you notice in the original Death on the Nile you can clearly see same set of matched steamer trunks made by Louis Vuitton they also block a entry door to the orient express in Murder on the orient express and they also show up in Evil under the sun

THANK YOU for doing this video. I watched both last night and completely agree that the original '78 film was superior. Especially Mia Farrow's performance--which sold her "she's in shock" moment whereas the 2022 performance definitely did not. AND--I preferred Jackie and Simon's end in the original. The standoff in the 2022 which felt like that film didn't understand the climax. Also, the 2022 film made me sad that Bouc died. I don't remember him from the recent remake, but I didn't think he deserved that death.

ok, although the original is much better i did like some aspects of the new one. the visuals, the music, the clothing, the actors. i knew going in (based on the orient express) that it wouldnt be a TRUE camp rhomp like the og films, the dude just doesnt get that poirot is very scooby doo. seems inept but at the end of the day he gets the job done. mr. brenna takes himself too serious to portray himself in such a way. ewan mcgregger would be a better modern day poirot. that guy gets it. but i do have a question: both are based off the same book. why is the dialogue so different? i LOVED the dialogue in the 78 film; both melodramatic and clever. there was DRAMA!!!!!!!!!! is it adapting the book more faithfully, or just had a better writer?

watching the new movie was such a dissapointed i was already expecting it to not be great but the lack of glamour and the bad fashion really made it even worse especially considering they had the 1978 version to be inspired by??? how can they fail this badly??

Your review is spot on… I thought I held the same sentiment of both versions… The 2022 version lacked the acting chops that the 1978 was full of. The Karnak felt way less grand even with all the CGI this also applies to most of the other scenes. I view Kenneth Branagh as a better actor than director he makes an earnest attempt at directing an international cast yet the film as a whole fell flat most of the time. 10’000 % watch the original don’t watch the 2022 version the original you can revisit many times as with the 2022 version you will stay clear of.

Wow! I’m impressed by your breakdown of the movies. Yes, the Kenneth Branagh movie was irritating, boring and lifeless. It didn’t generate enough thrills or suspense and yes, it was infused with modern dirty dancing and current social events ( the message ) and did not emphasize the elements of a fun murder mystery. The quirky old version from 1978 is definitely better!! Thanks for the spot on reviews.

Thank you for this I loathed the new one, you're comments are like my inner dialogue watching the Branagh film. Such a weird spectacle, strange story diversions and the CGI is horrendous. And how dare anyone waste French and Saunders this way!
