The "let's get ready to Dumbo" makes sense when you know this is from the same screenwriter who put giant wrecking ball testicles on a robot in Transformers 2. Based on that movie (with Skid Marks and Mud Flaps) there probably was an earlier draft with the crows intact.

Just came from the cinema. Ok, I'm a really easy audience. I'm entertained by almost any movie I bother to go see, there's always something I like. But I was *so bored* watching Dumbo. Something in the atmosphere was missing, not enough cute animals, and I didn't manage to care about the humans and their unbelievably boring drama at all. What a waste of time.

My main memory of the original movie was when little Dumbo was brought to visit his chained and imprisoned mother and they play that song "Baby of Mine" and I'm letting go with the big, heaving sobs watching this poor creature denied the love of his Mom..... then I see the remake's version of the song on KZbin and it's an upbeat dream sequence with pretty much zero of the emotional depth of the first film... and now I'm like "fuck you very much for sanitizing my childhood, Disney".

See the movie before making that judgment. But if your mind is already set...SPOILERS.......the "Baby Mine" scene is in the movie, slow version and all. After a massive tragedy strikes the circus, its performers are sitting by a campfire at night, and one of them is singing a beautiful acoustic version of the song as Dumbo visits his mother.

@@BATCHARRO Yeah, see, wha ha happened was... Anita and Cruella were best friends as children. Sleepovers, camping trips, summer fun, all that. Then, one day, while the children were running a lemonade stand, a stray dog was spotted across the street. Anita wanted to coax the dog over but Cruella protested, claiming the dog would simply knock things over. Anita ignores this and calls over the dog. The mutt makes a beeline for Anita, jumping on her. Its tail gets caught on the tablecloth and it pulls the cloth and the lemonade supplies to the ground, splashing on Cruella, drenching her clothes and causing her eyes to sting. When she yells at Anita, Anita simply defends the dog and walks away with it. As Cruella watches her friend skip away, feeling the double sting of betrayal and lemon, a deep hatred for animals is born. She decides to go into the world of fashion, not because of a love in clothing or designs, but to inflict harm on animals while still remaining within the boundaries of the law.

Wings of Prophecy Correct, But after Aladdin 😉! Maleficent I loved or enjoyed ... it was a spin to the original but yeah I mean Beauty and the Beast was nothing special or unique animation beat it cold casting was poor I mean who was the prince 🤴 he seemed like a teen or child not a grown , powerful, responsible king who is control of an entire kingdom. Also, I think Lion King will be bland even if Queen Bee 🐝 stars in it and I heard they want to make Little Mermaid into a live film so be also so-so and based on many reviews Dumbo is short of stellar so animation is clearly the best and they should stop taking classy movies and making a live one that is worse!

@ThePa1riot
@ThePa1riot 5 жыл бұрын
Can’t say I agree Bob. I just got back from this movie and I was over the moon for it. Which no one is surprised more than me because the trailers did not inspire confidence in me. Of course Dumbo never looks convincingly like he’s really there and the world seems warped and surreal, it’s a Tim Burton movie set backstage to a circus. This was never going to be Glengarry Glen Ross or even the Jungle Book. Dumbo’s connection with the family is genuine and they even reinvent the magic feather beat from the original by tying it in with the daughter holding on to the key her Mom left for her. That’s a clever retake on the concept because it’s no longer the mouse just telling Dumbo it’s a placebo but the girl herself has to let go of her own magic feather in order for Dumbo to fly. They even give Dumbo a bonafied hero moment at the end. Something I didn’t know I wanted until I had it. Not only was seeing Dumbo “buzz the tower” and actually save his surrogate family from danger just a delight to witness, it grants him agency he didn’t have in the original. All that stuff about diversity, anti-capitalism, and all that. It reminds me of what you said about in your Tarzan movie review. I honestly didn’t even register it until you brought it up. Not to accuse you of anything. Could it just be though you’re bringing baggage into this movie that just doesn’t have a place for it? I loved it and I really wasn’t expecting to.

Just saw it and honestly, this is my favourite of the live-action Disney remakes so far, for whatever that is worth. I'm just enough of a sucker for the specific kind of cuteness baby Dumbo represents for the film to basically melt my heart every time he was on screen and I was invested in other characters and overarching story enough, that it didn't feel like a complete waste of time the same way Junglebook-remake did, nor did it completely spit in the face of the original version's story and premise the same way that Maleficent did. So yeah, can't say I'd agree with Bob on this one.

Although it is grim and dark with not that much to look at (which reminds me of my childhood experiences going to the circus, in retrospect) the story seemed quite coherent and Dumbo is cute. @@armstrongjosh I admit I haven't, that's why I didn't comment on the QUALITY of anything. Rather I'm complaining about the marketing. We live in an age where proper marketing can make or break your product. Need I remind you of the Nintendo WiiU? And Live-Action Dumbo is marketing itself as a remake of 1941 Dumbo when it really isn't. It doesn't have talking animals, and it drastically changes the "Rudolph plot" that 1941 Dumbo was playing dead-straight, in both theme AND conclusion if Bob is to be believed. OH WHAT THE- bahahahahahahahahahahahaha Yeah I already wasn't gonna see this but thanks for cinching it for me. The thing is, I really feel like there's something about this time period and this sort of setting that could really pay off if only someone could figure out the formula. We keep getting glimpses of it (Carnivale, Mrs. Peregrine's, others that escape my mind just now - hell, Pan's Labyrinth, sorta) so we can see clearly that filmmakers know this and are trying. I myself am sort of wracking my brains trying to think of a property that could do this. Post WWI is a tremendously evocative time. Between the Roaring 20s and the Great Depression/Dustbowl 30s is such a fucking rollercoaster of teetering on the edge of technology while still keeping a foot in the dust, where whimsical fantasy pairs with dire straits... I hope someone figures it out, because I'm interested. There's got to be a video game or novel series. I know it. Like some post WWI magic-steampunk sort of deal.

Your take on this, especially with regards to whether people should take the kids, reminds me of the live action Pinocchio that came out in the 90's. Similar idea, take a twisted Disney classic and make it even weirder, and I remember being like 6 years old and just haunted by that thing.

Tim Burton would have been a better choice to make a live action version of "The Black Cauldron" and he could attempt to fix some of the films glaring flaws, as the original was a good idea, it was just hampered by odd ideas that didn't work. Burton making a movie as "light hearted" and "sweet" as Dumbo is just bizarre. It would be as odd as if Walt Disney made a slasher horror film back when he was alive.

Live-action remakes are not the way to show you are more inclusive or progressive than you, and everyone else, were back in the day, Disney. You do than by moving forward and making cinematic masterpieces like you used to. Or a live-action Kingdom Hearts film. I’d camp for days to see that.

Actually, Cruella is possibly a prequel or a soft reboot of the 90s Dalmation remake. Glenn Close is producing the new one.
@moviebobcentral
@moviebobcentral 5 жыл бұрын
Officially it's some kind of prequel set in the 70s with a young Cruella (not yet named that, apparently?) as the protagonist. It's meant to be a "villain origin" with some sort of "female Oliver Twist" angle (they want Nicole Kidman to play the nemesis, some kind of wealthy baroness or criminal) and something will supposedly happen in the course of it to cause not-yet-Cruella to "hate dalmations" and possibly drive her mad.

The '90s were Burton's golden era, in the 2000s he still made Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd and Big Fish, and in the 2010s his only watchable films were Frankenweenie and Big Eyes... Either he should just retire, or just really take his time and do something original. I realized *A LOT* of his works are adaptations, he's at his best when he cooks up stuff like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas.

Unusual for me, I did not see this Disney movie. As problematic as some, well maybe more than some, scenes in Dumbo (1941) are, "old" Dumbo still holds a childhood fondness that I do not want wiped away leaving a disappointed adult. My typical response to a movie that I am curious about, but do not wish to pay theater prices to see is, I will wait until it comes to Netflix. Well that is not going happen.

Dumbo 2: Bioshock where Micheal Keaton is Andrew Ryan only he's making a circus instead of a city. Now I love Bioshock don't get me wrong, but god damn it this is why people should stop letting Tim Burton do these live action remakes. Did Alice in Ünderland teach Disney anything? Or even the Charlie and the Chocolate factory and Planet of the Apes remakes?

Everyone always talks about the crows being racist. No one ever mentions that the crows are the friendliest, most helpful characters in the movie (next to Timothy Q. Mouse), and that it's the elephants, specifically the coded-to-snobbish-rich-white-ladies elephants, that are so rotten you'll want Ted Nugent to poach them.

0:45-1:20 in the video's time still sounds like a more interesting/better movie, regardless of how you feel about how old school the entirety of the movie is. Besides if a channel Double Toasted (with a lot of black people on it) could still love it I don't understand how people could hate a movie or a book exclusively on racial sensitivity as if story or characters don't matter anymore.

Question: is any body actually offended by the crows in Dumbo? Yes I get it, the leader is called Jim Crow. But has anyone ever sat down, watched Dumbo and gotten offended by it? There's nothing in it that has any negative implications or malice. The crows aren't crooks, they're not dumb, and they're not eating chicken and watermelon. They're among the few sympathetic characters in the film. It seems like people are awkward about it just because it feels like the right thing to do.
