It’s a really brilliant film. The final “No” is the rejection of of Avner’s Judaism. Because Bana’s character has rejected Israel’s policy he is now no longer Jewish in their eyes. It’s the final betrayal, that a land that could be founded on open exceptance. A “last place for the Jewish people” could in tern reject someone, just because he refused to kill for them.

One big problem with this scene there location is on the east river looking west in 1975 the twin Towers of the world trade center would have dominated the skyline and been visible. Construction on the Towers was completed in 1973 .this movie was made in 2006 at that point There would have been a large void in the NYC skyline the freedom Tower would not have been constructed for another 10 years.I take back everything I just said I just watched the end and sure enough those magnificent Towers are visible. My bad

Probably because Avner is not willing to go back home, in Israel, so he basically rejects the way of life Ephraim embodies.
@saghirhussain4360 Жыл бұрын
It's symbolic. Anver invited him out of a Jewish custom, Ephraim's rejection is a sign that he doesn't care about faith. The whole point of the film is to show that this is not about religion...
@BrianSchiller-g9b7 ай бұрын
Ephraim (Rush) represents the Israeli identity. When Bana's character (Avner) references their Jewish identity by asking him to come over and "break bread" and Epraim (Rush) says "no" and walks away, the writer, Kushner, who is an anti-Zionist btw, is basically saying that the Israelis have abandoned or lost their Jewish identity or character.

In reality, the Israeli assassin teams killed an innocent Moroccan waiter, and also a car bomb that killed a nun and a student. But they left that out the movie.

There is an awkwardness watching this scene in December 2023, as the IDF ploughs its way through the overcrowded ghetto and wasteland that once was Gaza. I fear for Israel. It has lost its way and become a toy of the mad settlers of the West Bank and their bloodthirsty allies. Do I weep for the broken dream? I think perhaps I do. Now, there are monsters afoot.

What do you expect is going to happen in the end? 70% of "Palestinians" supported the Oct 7th attacks (The PALESTINIAN Center for Policy and Survey Research). The "Palestinian's" own religion - 85-90% are Sunni Muslim - makes it a holy mission to get rid of Jews: Sahih Muslim 2922. Even a "moderate" "Palestinian" political entity like the "Palestinian Authority" has never published an Arabic charter that hasn't called for the destruction of Israel. The "Palestinians" have rejected two state solutions time and time again. At what point do you go "hmm... I think they might be sincere in not wanting a Jewish state at all". And how are other religious minorities doing at the hands of the adherents of "the religion of peace" in the ME?: "Christian Persecution in the Middle East reaching 'genocide-like' levels" - BBC 3rd May 2019. Christians made up a 1/5th of the ME population only a centur ago, now that's been whittled down to 5%, and Israel is the only ME country still with a discernible Jewish population.

@@3rdEyeWideYou’ve shown a bunch of statistics but lets talk about that first one. “70% of Palestinians support the October 7 attacks” Yet, for someone so smart to list a bunch of numbers fails in humanity to ask “why” Why would they support that? Do you think it’s because they are trapped in an open air prison, maybe its because Israel controls the water and energy of gaza? Maybe its because they have decreased the fishing yields from 9km out to sea(where you can get the big catches) down to just 3km. Maybe it’s because for the last 75 years, the Palestinians have been ethnically cleansed. You fail to ask these questions and that makes you a close minded individual. So next time when you see a statistic like that maybe do some research into why.

@@CSorgini I don't even know what I'm responding to as my original post is no longer showing. Hmm... Did you run off to mummy and daddy and tell them I have been writing "naughty" things? You want the "why"? I don't know if I said it in my last comment or not. It is a tenet of the Islamic faith that Juice must be gotten rid of. Sahih Muslim 2922. 85-90% of the "Palestinians" are Sunni Muslim. Ever since it's inception the Islamic faith has been determined to ethnically cleanse the region (and eventually the world) of all other faiths/ideologies (but they have a particular hatred towards the Juice as they see them as evil and corrupt whilst people of faiths like Christianity are well intentioned but "misguided"). Look up what the phrase "After Saturday comes Sunday" means to people of the Islamic faith. BTW - Gaza shares a border with Eqypt which the Eqyptians keep closed. Doesn't that make Egypt "Palestinian" "Jailers" as well? (I wonder "why" Egypt does that. Maybe you should research what has happened to countries in the region when they have accepted "Palestinian" refugees - Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon etc). I look forward to this comment being reported and deleted. “When you tear out a man's tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you're only telling the world that you fear what he might say.” - George R.R.
