This is such a great scene because Daniel is able to console his teacher/mentor, and Daniel also gives Miyagi insight into the fact that Miyagi was a good son to his father.

I remember when that scene came on and there was dead silence in the movie theatre. I mean, there was no noise, not a sound. It was as though Pat Morita opened up a very rare part of himself and was sharing Mr. Miyagi's grief with us. 36+ years later and it's still surreal.

Scripts aren't developed enough in today's Hollywood. Movies and TV shows overseas still reach this level of character development and deep emotion, but it's almost a lost art in America now. Not that it's 100% gone but the craft and understanding of what it meant to make a meaningful connection with the audience was much more consistent in this era

Incredibly sad scene. Good acting by Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio. Poor Mr. Miyagi mourning his father and Daniel consoling him by telling him about when his own father died and it shows that Daniel is more than a student and friend, he is like a son to Mr. Miyagi. The pain of loss.

It's interesting: my mom died in 86'. It took me a long, long time for me to get back into the flow of things. It's good clip: thank you for posting it.

I took this scene for granted. I thought I didn't need a father figure but I desperately needed one. I even desperately sought for a father figure without knowing it. Always trying to impress older men to take me under their wing. But It never happened.

I remember this scene. Daniel and his words ring true. This was how it was when I said goodbye to my uncle. I was there with him and I knew that he would pass away very soon. My last words to him before I left the hospital were “Godspeed.” I think he was waiting until the time came for us to end our last visit with him before he told GOD that he was ready to be with him…….
