To all you thinking this ending was just a dying dream of his. Martin Scorsese made the ultimate plot twist and the underlying message that society has just turned Travis Bickle into a hero because he shot a pimp who abused an underage girl. That's the ultimate irony. It's actually far more brilliant than Bickle simply dying. Had it really been a dying dream of Travis Bickle's it would have been over-the-top and he'd walk scot free and have everybody shake his hand for his contribution to society.

If Travis had known where she lived earlier in the film then he would have went to her house instead of calling her repeatedly and getting mad. I hope I explained this correctly. Army? Travis was a marine. "I was in the marines too ..." said foreman Willie Cici
@archerj.maggott13725 жыл бұрын
It doesn't necessarily imply any delusion on the part of Travis. It says, "Travis Bickle, 26, has been a hack driver for the past six months since he came to New York upon leaving the Service where he fought in a special forces unit in Viet Nam, it was learned from the president of the taxi garage where he worked out of." 'The Service' can mean any of the main branches of the armed forces, although it was stated earlier in the movie that Travis had been in the Marines, and while 'special forces' properly refers to the US Army Special Forces -- which is colloquially known as the 'green berets' -- it is also commonly used in the media to refer to any special operations force. 'Special operations' can be a loose term as well, and since the US Special Operations Command has only existed since 1987, it would have been an even looser used term in the 1970s. 'Special' units also have lots of billets that aren't filled by commandos, such as a clerks, armorers, mechanics, medics, etc. News writers also like to use language that doesn't necessarily tell the entire tedious story in granular fashion, but which is broadly accurate, conveys a clear image and is easy to understand.

Being an Englishman, looking from an outsiders viewpoint, I have always imagined New York City to be a sophisticated, upscale kinda place, where everything is larger than life. From its skyscrapers that reach to heaven (almost), traffic that dwarfs anything on the English roads. The cuisine, multi cultural and abundant.New York's inhabitants are blue collar, hard working types with a strong sense of family ties and loyalty. The sophisticated, competitive, well educated types, who move light years ahead of me, with their schemes and dreams. Yet within New York and all great cities throughout the world, lies a seedy and evil underbelly, that caters to mans more debased needs. And in a Reddit AMA, screenwriter Paul Schrader explained, “The epilogue is not a dream sequence….”.'' ''But what does Martin Scorsese have to say about the ending? Well, according to the director, Travis survived the shoot-out…and chances are good he’s going to erupt again. In the last seconds of the film, Travis looks into his rearview mirror and sees his own wild eyes looking back. We get one last glimpse of his insanity, churning under the surface, and there’s suddenly a harsh, strange note on the soundtrack as Travis adjusts his mirror and looks away from his reflection. According to Scorsese, “I decided I’d put something on that shows that the timer in Travis starts to tick again, the bomb that’s about to explode again.”.''

The picture of Travis in the newspaper article looks nothing even like him
@waltwhitman75452 жыл бұрын
he's still the same travis. except the world thinks he's a hero now, instead of shunning him and leaving him alone after the war that they should have never sent him to. he created his own suicide mission, his own war, and somehow that was what made him into a hero for them. that's travis' tragedy, as you can see in his anxious ending, he's doomed to be forgotten, isolated, until he finds another cause he believes is the one to end his life with

This is not a dream sequence. Scorsese himself said it isn’t. But it’s not a happy ending either. He’s still insane, and his angry look at the end implies he may end up killing Betsie.

Cool theory, If the creators of this movie didnt literally say that this all happened and the point of the ending is that he's right back to where he was. And will likely tick again

I remember not liking this movie as much as everybody else did and to this day I still don't love it , I appreciate it and I definitely enjoyed it but for me it not really re-watchable as maybe for other people , but I will definitely say one thing I loved about this movie... it Robert De Niro's exceptional performance as Travis Bickle , To be honest when I really think about it I enjoyed his performance way more then Peter Finch performance in Network , I think Network is a better film but performance wise De Niro has to do it for me. Update : This film grew on me, I seen it 7 times by now and I used to only like it but now I feel like I love this film, its a piece of art.

This movie is an in and out classic which can never be bested. It has that something special about it. It makes you uncomfortable for some reasons.

Those who say this is a dream sequence miss the point of the ending, just watch and think of the last shoot of the movie, the one where Travis looks himself at the mirror and think what does that means, I know what it means but I want to see what you think before I share my thoughts.

but that's not De Niro in the newspaper as Travis, is it? What if he just imagines and wishes it was him who saved the girl?
@RikerLovesWorf Жыл бұрын
I love how stilted and awkward the letter is read. It's almost as if the parents know the reality but cannot say what they understand - Travis is no hero, he's a creep who saved their daughter because of his own ego, and their daughter was willingly turning tricks and not truly kidnapped.
