The ending is awesome because the non-Jewish Russians step in to celebrate Lazar Wolf and Tevye's deal. It's a sneakily powerful notion of the unifying power of dance, drink and the celebration of life.

This scene if so great for so many reasons. It establishes the relationship between the Jewish and Christian communities as distant but friendly which makes it sadder when we get the news of the order plans right after. It is also so interesting to think about the point of view. From Tevye’s POV this is good luck for the first time in a long time. But the audience knows with hindsight and the scenes from Seidel’s POV that this deal will rob her of future happiness. It’s a celebratory song to Tevye, but it could easily be interpreted as a villain song if you see the girl’s point of view.

It's a good reminder of how real ethnicl relations work though. These guys drink and celebrate with them and talk about peace one day, and then a few days later attack them for no reason. That's been a big part of Jewish history for a long time, as well as other opressed groups. So trust can be really hard to build. The memory of it lasts generations.

All I can think is poor Tzeitel! Not even my great grandmas at that time, would marry such old guys. Yes, they got married as young ladies, even teens, but not with men older than 26-27. This groom here is widowed and older than the bride's father.

there is a lot to be said for both sides. Im sure a marriage made by a matchmaker could work as well as a marriage made by yourself. Maybe better. A lot of people cant seem to find a husband/wife for themselves.
@cmm5542
@cmm5542 2 жыл бұрын
@@marissashantez6051 It might have shifted by today, but just twenty years ago the statistics for arranged marriages lasting were higher than non-arranged marriages. One of my mother's friends, from India, had an arranged marriage that resulted in one of the loveliest and closest couples I know - it was after knowing them that I looked up the statistics. I have a very high respect for arranged marriages both historically and culturally. But like any custom, it can be warped to serve harmful ends. Marrying Tzeitel to Lazar Wolf should have been pretty obvious even beforehand to her own parents as NOT what would make her happy, just material gain.

@@SpartakMs83 Agreed. Speaking as a young woman, I would have been rather unhappy to have to marry him as he's not fit or handsome, but I have enough intelligence to realize that's just as shallow as a man only wanting to marry a girl who is beautiful. I never found him creepy; he admired Tzeitel's character and dignified behaviour and would have treated her with respect. He was hard-working, kindhearted and clearly had a sense of fun despite his age! It probably would have been a good match if she hadn't already been in love with someone else.
