CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rhett (Clark Gable) reveals that he can see through Scarlett's (Vivien Leigh) act and that she and her family are in dire straits.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Gone With the Wind boils down to a story about a spoiled Southern girl's hopeless love for a married man. Producer David O. Selznick managed to expand this concept, and Margaret Mitchell's best-selling novel, into nearly four hours' worth of screen time, on a then-astronomical 3.7-million-dollar budget, creating what would become one of the most beloved movies of all time. Gone With the Wind opens in April of 1861, at the palatial Southern estate of Tara, where Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) hears that her casual beau Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) plans to marry "mealy mouthed" Melanie Hamilton (Olivia de Havilland). Despite warnings from her father (Thomas Mitchell) and her faithful servant Mammy (Hattie McDaniel), Scarlett intends to throw herself at Ashley at an upcoming barbecue at Twelve Oaks. Alone with Ashley, she goes into a fit of histrionics, all of which is witnessed by roguish Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), the black sheep of a wealthy Charleston family, who is instantly fascinated by the feisty, thoroughly self-centered Scarlett: "We're bad lots, both of us." The movie's famous action continues from the burning of Atlanta (actually the destruction of a huge wall left over from King Kong) through the now-classic closing line, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Holding its own against stiff competition (many consider 1939 to be the greatest year of the classical Hollywood studios), Gone With the Wind won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American to win an Oscar). The film grossed nearly 192 million dollars, assuring that, just as he predicted, Selznick's epitaph would be "The Man Who Made Gone With the Wind."

The description is ridiculous. The movie is NOT about a southern girl in love with a married man. The movie is a coming-of-age story of a girl who is raised in a world who is absolutely destroyed, realizes all her abilities and most of her education are useless, and is forced to change and harden to survive and to protect their family on the go. The members of their family (including the house slaves) are very much unable to change, and some live in a depression limbo of remembrance of the past, so she has to carry the burden of all of them on her shoulders. She gets extremely burned out because of that. Summarizing the complexity of all of it into a love story is just ridiculous.

@@anneb889 No. Vivien Leigh was so gorgeous that the audience sympatizes with her. But in the story, everyone close to Scarlett knew she was a mean, selfish, bigheaded, vain person. Even Ashley Wilkes knew Melanie was way above Scarlett as a human being. Rhett of course, saw that too but contrary to other people, he accepted her with all her flaws. My theory is that Rhett always wanted to marry a woman like Belle Watling, (the same way a lot of men of this era fantazises to marry a playmate) and Scarlett was the closest thing to that fantasy. But he totally knew 01:53 that Scarlett is going to bring misery to him.

Rhett could get any woman he wanted without marrying... except for Scarlett. In the book, he says he actually thought of killing Frank Kennedy to get her. He probably expected Scarlett to be willing to be his mistress after he got out of jail, but he found her married again. He was so willing to get her into bed that he decided he had to marry her in order to get her. Much as Scarlett was obsessed with Ashley, so was Rhett with Scarlett.

Rhett is a big fat liar; and a good one at that. That is why at the end of the book, despite having to read tragedy books, I can't help but think that Scarlett got him back in the end. I don't need to read pathetic sequels to know that. This is not just a wishful thinking. If you understand the characters, you know they end up together again. He has lied to her so many times yet his actions contradicted it. When he finally able to move forward on Bonnie's death, surely there will be an HEA. @@julijakeit Well, that's exactly what happened. Rhett was the bad boy, and he married the bad girl (because he couldn't get her otherwise), and they made each other miserable. In the end, they grow up, but it's too late for them to have a relationship. And I must say, Scarlett took less time than Rhett to mature.

If the film were made today, she would’ve explicitly said what she meant. Old Hollywood was the golden era of subtext. The Production Code is criticized today for how restrictive it was, but it was because of those restrictions that we got the masterful subtext of old films that is largely missing from modern films.

I have read the book twice. I feel the spirit of the book is well captured by the director by casting vivien as scarlet. She performs the role with the right expressions and Rhet is dynamic. He is so rustic and rude to scarlet and she gives him back the same way.

my feelings are mixed w/ this scene, Rhett just missed two weeks! or was it a week? if he was only released earlier, Scarlett wouldn't have needed to marry that old guy Suellen was with... no wonder Rhett proposed right after she was widowed again saying how he was tired of chasing her between husbands~

What acting, what looks! Wow! that Vivien Leigh [Scarlet O'Hara] looked like a million bucks in her heyday. Notice how those animated green eyes express a myriad moods. While she was swearing love to Rhett Butler [Clark Gable], she always had a hidden agenda because it was no secret that her heart belonged to Ashley [Leslie Howard]. As Scarlet O'Hara she was spirited, fiery, disobedient, ruthless, but still lovable at the same time.. Acting came naturally to her by the savoir faire she displayed in all her films. My fave Leigh film is "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" 1962 with Warren Beatty.
