FILM DESCRIPTION:
Disillusioned knight Bowen (Dennis Quaid) befriends Draco (Sean Connery), the last of the dragons, and the two begin scamming village folk as Bowen repeatedly "kills" Draco for money. Bowen soon learns that Draco is the same dragon who once saved his former student, now King Einon (David Thewlis), from death by giving him a piece of his heart. Einon is now a merciless tyrant, and Bowen is compelled to stop him -- but the bond between king and dragon means if one dies, the other does as well.

When I was a kid, I confused this movie for Braveheart. My friend and I put the Braveheart VHS tape into the player thinking we'd watch a cute fun dragon movie. As that beginning scene played out with the bodies hanging from the ceiling, I was like "Don't worry man I know that dragon'll show up real soon."

They've made 4 sequels apparently. Dragon Heart 2: A new Beginning Dragon Heart 3: A Sorcerers Curse Dragon Heart: Battle of the Heartfire Dragon Heart: Vengence I like Vengence mainly because the dragon is female and low key kinda "hot". 😆 But all sequel films put together still pale in comparison to the original film here.

@@Kurtsg10 A company specialised in making animatronic actually made a practical prototype in early production and even made various screen tests, but somewhat failed - Universal didn't like it and proposed to ILM (Industrial of Light&Magic, the same team that made the dinasours in Jurassic Park) to create for them a CGI dragon. Partly, I'm glad they redesigned the dragon digitally (although it didn't age splendidly) based on Connery's features, the early animatronic model felt a bit lame and generic, design speaking.

As cheesy as this movie is, this movie has some major strong points that are definitely missing in a lot of modern movies: - actually witty and humorous dialogue without going overboard, instead of people trying to outmeme each other - A "realistic" hero (becomes so cynical that he tries to scam people for gold for more than half of the film and only become virtue and selfless at the 3rd act with the help of a mentor/dragon) - Actual battle tactics (farmers utilize guerrilla warfare to win against calvary charge) - Sean Connery (nuff said), Dina Meyer, Dennis Quaid and Peter William Postlethwaite - No corny love story - Fairly natural CGI for 1996

There's this theory I've been hearing on movie-discussion youtube channels, that poor CGI and visual effects can be overlooked if the characters and story are well-written and performed by the actors. There is also the inverse, that bad CGI and visual-effects stick out more in peoples minds if the story and acting is poorly executed. Look at the CGI and special effects in the first two Terminator movies: A plastic Arnold-head and a CGI-liquid effect that would look dated on the Sega Dreamcast. Yet those two movies are considered well-loved classics today.

@@skankhunt-wy9wy Getting knighted is just as big an achievement as earning your doctorate, bigger even, because a lot less people get knighted per year than graduate med school. It is an honor similar to winning a Nobel Prize. Yes, it very much IS like calling a doctor 'Mr.'. Actually, it is worse, it's more like calling the Queen of England 'Mrs. Windsor' or even just 'Liz'. Yes, it's his name, but it's still INCREDIBLY disrespectful not to acknowledge his earned status and achievement, ESPECIALLY in a memorial, which is formal and should include a person's full name and title, which is a part of his name.

In my opinion, this movie does the idea of a dragon being good better than other dragon movies. Drago has no desire to kill Sir Bowen and he doesn’t want Sir Bowen to kill him, he forms a truce. Sir Bowen isn’t evil because he thought Drago corrupted Einon’s heart which lead to Sir Bowen slaying dragons. King Einon and his father who I believe raised him to be bad are the real villains. I’m glad this movie didn’t do the whole “knights are evil because they slay dragons” and “dragons are evil, no good dragons.” Drago kills in self defense not for pleasure like evil dragons. It’s just satisfying to see a knight and a dragon put their differences aside and work together instead of trying to kill each other. Dragoheart is my second favorite movie about a dragon that’s good. I think How To Train Your Dragon is a little overrated yet I don’t hate it.

This movie is from 1996, and still has one of the best looking dragons to come to film. Also, a PROPER dragon, 4 legged 2 winged. None of that Wyvern 2 legged shyte.

what a great movie that was. I've seen my share of dragons in my days, and they've been kind to my family most of them. but there was a couple of them who tried to take advantage of me and my first dragon. almost killed her, pinned us both down, me and my dragon friend Mollys both fought them when I was only in my crib. we must've been both babies at the time... but I remember that thing the other one among the two dragons said; "it's either me or her..." sounds like a threat to me. that was terrifying to think about, I knew we would get hurt, so I kicked off the one holding Mollys down. I think...
