CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Patch (Robin Williams) confronts Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) about telling the Dean that he cheated, an argument ensues.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.

Both of these men are acting gods and this is a crucial scene. Their sudden departures in this past year have made it a very dark period in the movie industry for sure. But we should celebrate their incredible bodies of work and honour their memories, not focus in on the final moments of their lives, as traumatic as they were. I'm sure it's not what they'd want. Seymour Hoffman and Williams busted their asses nearly everyday of the year without hesitation to entertain millions of people worldwide.

Some people have an innate gift, while others who are really smart have to work really hard to achieve that same level of giftedness. Take music, for example. Somebody like Mozart, who was playing and composing music by the time he was FIVE and could reportedly play a piece, NOTE PERFECT, after just HEARING it only once...and then take me. Now, I'm a decent musician and have been playing off and on since the age of eleven--I'm 42 now--but I would have to work AWFUL hard just to attain the level of mastery that Mozart had in childhood.

I don't think it's pride so much as, he doesn't think Patch is taking it seriously. Both he and we as the audience never see him really study. How can you be better at something, like medicine which takes years to get good at without studying. I always feel like this scene is referencing another scene or two that was cut, because his criticism is valid. We don't even get a throw away line like "I have a photographic memory." This movie sucked so bad it made me angry. Adams, as he was portrayed by Williams, was the real prick. Hoffman’s character was right, and Hoffman stole the show, as he often did. It is one thing for a DJ to be a clown to add some entertainment to his show (GM Vietnam). I do not want my doctor to be a clown. If the cancer kids need a clown to cheer them up, then the hospital can hire a clown.

Jon Gilbertson Firstly adams wasn’t the prick, secondly hoffman didn’t steal the show and if you watched, then you would know his character eventually went to Adams side because he knew deep down he was right. Yes the same Adams that you called a “prick” smh. And lastly the movie was good and your in a small minority but an opinions an opinion and your entitled to yours. Even if it is ignorant

Oldiezz The real Patch Adams hated this movie. He had nothing against Williams but he said the movie didn’t portray him or his life correctly. In fact, the amount of things that are added and created for this movie is astounding when comparing it to the real life of Hunter Adams. The biggest example is the character of Corrine. But I don’t want to assume that you don’t know the real life of Hunter Adams. If you don’t, I recommend you do because it would really open your eyes to a man who really puts his heart and soul to what he does. However, if you do know the true story and still like this movie, then no problem. Everyone has the right to like the movie they like.

I can kind, of relate too Adams in this scene. When I was in school i goofed off a lot and joked around. Other people whould make fun of me and call me stupid and weird.evan teachers hated me.but it was better then walking around all day acting miserable and serious just too fit in. I think the lesson is just be yourself and you'll find happiness.

The issues of this film is that it isn't accurate at all. Robin's performance made Patch too much of a clown. The real Patch was serious in becoming a doctor and incorporated joy and laughter into his practice. He did not steal from the hospital, and his murdered friend was not female (Monica Potter). And Philip makes a good point: if you had to choose between a prick or a clown, you would choose the one who acts more professional. The movie still has a great message but they could have portrayed it more accurately.
