CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After a rough start, Susie Diamond (Michelle Pfeiffer) enlivens the Baker Boys' (Beau Bridges, Jeff Bridges) lounge act.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Real-life siblings Beau and Jeff Bridges star as the eponymous Fabulous Baker Boys. Musical prodigies both, the Bakers have long been teamed as a twin-piano act, with the less talented Frank (Beau Bridges) coasting on the skills of his brilliant younger brother, Jack (Jeff Bridges). Their career dwindling to nickel-and-dime dates in second-rate clubs, the Bakers decide that they need a female vocalist to boost their popularity. They select auditioner Susie Diamond (Michelle Pfeiffer), who in addition to being a gifted songstress is drop-dead gorgeous. The newly renovated Baker Boys act scores a success, which is inevitably threatened by Susie's growing popularity and by Jack's insistence upon pursuing an affair with the girl.

Sumptuous, gorgeous, delicious. Michelle AND the movie. Yes, the "Makin' Whoopee" scene smolders, but Michelle singing "More Than You Know" so vulnerably is just breathtaking. Career made right at that moment.

'ten cents a dance' was written in 1930. ten cents in 1930 are equivalent to two dollars today. two dollars for a dance with Michelle Pfeiffer is definitely worth it. : )

Point of order--might want to mention the songwriters. Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. They did not write any of the songs for this movie (which I have seen like twenty times). They had to do a whole lot of editing to get it this right. Pfeiffer had a nice voice, but wasn't a really experienced singer. She was so delighted over how she sounded when she saw the rushes, she tried to perform live--it did not go well. Because Life is not a Movie. You don't have nearly so much backup. My favorite rendition is Anita O'Day's, on an album of Rodgers & Hart standards--the arrangement here is much better, but here's the thing--O'Day was a marathon dancer as a teenager, during the Depression. If there was a tougher job than being a taxi dancer, that was it. You just kept dancing until you dropped. She came close to winning a few times. Once she was so tired, in a state of delirium, she had a vision of Jesus, asking her what she wanted to do in life. She said "I want to be a singer. Make people happy." Jesus said "Then that's how it will be." Obviously if they do a biopic now, they should cast Jonathan Roumie, but that's not the point of anything. Ella Fitzgerald's version is the most complete. Another album of R&H standards. But Anita's is the most lived in--except maybe Ruth Etting's. The point here in the film is, Suzie was an escort--so she's singing about more than just bad dancers. She was relying on the cards, but she loves this song, which speaks to her, so she knows it by heart. Or really--by Hart. ;)

Frank having something important to lose. Jack? Maybe just the same for the most part. He didn't really care that much at that point. Hence the death stare. Suzie? Nothing to lose at that point. Forgot about any possible humiliation. She goes all in.
