CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Poor and widowed, Malena (Monica Bellucci) cuts her hair to make herself available to the men of the town.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A young man's infatuation for a beautiful older woman blooms amidst the outbreak of World War II in this bittersweet comedy-drama from Italy. Renato (Giuseppe Sulfaro) is a 13-year-old boy growing up in a small Sicilian community. Mussolini has risen to power and has declared war upon England and France, but Renato has other things on his mind -- mostly girls. While hanging out with his friends by the seashore, Renato spies Malèna (Monica Bellucci), the daughter of one of his schoolteachers, whose husband Nino (Gaetano Aronica) is fighting with Mussolini's army. Renato is immediately obsessed with Malèna and follows her like a lost puppy, spying on her whenever circumstances permit and imagining her as his co-star in elaborate erotic fantasies inspired by his favorite movies. Renato, however, is hardly the only man in town to be struck by Malèna's charms, and her beauty leads to resentment from the women of the community. Malèna's circumstances take a turn for the worst after her husband is reported to have died in combat, and she is forced to resort to prostitution to survive; she is brutally attacked by a pack of angry matrons and driven from town. Renato tries to keep track of her, and has some less than encouraging news to report when Nino turns out to be alive and finds his spouse is missing. Malèna was written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, best known for the art-house hit Nuovo Cinema Paradiso; Malèna was released in Europe at 106 minutes, while the American version was edited by ten minutes to tighten the pace and remove nudity and sexual material considered too strong for the U.S. marketplace.

@Elyannia

It makes me sad to see her touching her hair after cutting it, then crying when men offered to light her cigarette, it means that she was letting go or her old self, the "widow" and the daughter that lost her childhood in her hair, then dyed it red and letting others light a flame, it symbolizes the burning of her innocence and hope, this scene breaks my heart, more than shoes, dresses, scorn and sex, she needed kindness, Monica is a great actress, she delivered the metaphor.

+Aamir Ali depends where you're from. if you've never experienced mediterranean culture, wether it be a family member of friend, people are like that, especially italians, whose even though culture i truly adore, are a little "hyper" by nature. And keep in mind this is a movie about the 1940s, so don't be surprised if i tell you that some similar shit like this might have actually happened in real life. i'm Albanian and i've heard of a million stories of first generation people undressing what they call "loose" women in the middle of the town just to humiliate them in front of everyone. So, very realistic.
@kcshuaipi7382

Tommy Hass yes, need. It's a very subjective matter and in my opinion its not a proper term to label people with, clothes are loose, not people… but anyway it is widely used so i wanted to express what i meant by still standing my ground.

No need to be ashamed of what other women do being a woman doesn't necessarily define who you are as a person I think there's no point of telling women to be nice to each other because of what women had to go through this limits the true meaning of humanity the missing point is that you shouldn't be treated based on your gender because at the end we're all different men and women and other we are all deserving of respect and compassion because we are human being not because we're the same

This movie digs deep. Men don't want to marry a woman if she has a reputation, then they just want to sleep with her. People ignore the average, but hate those who are exceptional in some way, especially if it is a woman. To not to be hated, you need to downplay your talent, beauty, success, whatever. 'Malena' also shows what happens when you are different from those around you. You have a target on your back. Blend in or pay the price. It's not Malena's beauty itself they hate, but how she flaunts it, thus being a threat.

Malena is such a beautiful beautiful movie, and so so sad. I am very pleased that I watched it, even though it disturbed me so. To see the animalistic behavior of humans as they beat her to shreds in the street. It is how people are...they want to "teach her a lesson." They want to dominate her, only accepting her in submission & modesty. They wait, to see if she'll submit. So she does, as though nothing happened. They then allow her back into the pack (since she is MODEST now). primal

Are you being delusional? Watch the movie. The film is made to be a wake up call. Not to be romantized.

This clearly shows that no matter how you look people are still going to judge you, mock you, bully you. And this can be seen in every country in every community etc. Let it be from past or present but one can seriously never be left out by judgemental eyes. Society will always judge you for your clothes, race, religion etc. What really hurt me is the fact that the are always going to judge you for your appearance not for the inside. They always judge them from their perspective not from the others perspective. (Btw this is really a great movie. Love it very much with great content and impacting message. ♥♥)

After seeing many videos, I’ve learned to think of every woman as their own beautiful self, and I no longer judge in my head. Feels good.

This scene made me realise that the acting skils of Monica Belluci has been overshadowed by her glamour and beauty...In most of the movies she is in, she has been used as a showpiece...This ironicallly reflects what heppens in the movie eventually...
