For people doubting the logic behind the "falling in love with your kidnapper", that's because it's not something that comes from logic. Stockholm Syndrome is a survival response to a stress environment where your physical well-being is not endangered but *could be* at any time. The stress it puts your body through can trigger a response to lower your stress and make you use seduction to lower your risk of wounds and/or death. The survival kick triggers on the psychological level, using the primal instinct of "seek shelter with the strong one." Which is also why the Stockholm Syndrome can trigger even amongst groups, maybe even more efficiently. (The Stockholm case in 1973 involved four hostages)

This is so brilliant mehn
@KineticSymphony3 жыл бұрын
Yup, but beyond just the immediate survival instinct, it can persist even after the kidnapper allows his victim freedom years later. There are stories of men kidnapping women and then later, those same kidnapped women helping the predator to abduct other women, helping the same man who captured them to begin with. It's wild how the mind works. It does make some sense though.

While it’s a part of popular culture and frequently referenced in media, there’s no scientific basis for it. In fact, it’s not included in the DSM and there is 0 conclusive research supporting it. The research that does exist is inconclusive. At best, it’s an extremely rare occurrence. The controversy around the 1973 bank robbery is super interesting. I recommend looking into it. The captives claimed that the Stockholm police coined the term “Stockholm Syndrome” to discredit their criticism. They publicly criticized the police ‘s handling of the situation, because the police made several moves that could have threatened their lives. To save face, the Swedish police enlisted a criminologist to call the captives brainwashed, and thus Stockholm syndrome was born.

To summarize for those confused by the lovely piano music in the background and/or this movie: This is a story about a woman who badly needs medical treatment after a horrible SA, but instead, her ex-boyfriend prevents her from seeing or speaking to anyone else, kidnaps and relocates her miles away from everything, and keeps her locked in a near-windowless room with the threat that she won’t be freed until she is sexually and emotionally intimate with HIM again. Oh, and in the meantime he tries to treat her serious injuries by googling them, absolutely making them worse in the process. He even physically harms her just to make sure she stays trapped. Bro is a psychopath. This is a *horror movie* not a love story. People really need to talk more about what consent is, my god.

Later, she'd be committed to a mental institute. Because of her condition, wouldn't she try to escape? Would the institute staff be guilty of kidnapping by forcing her to stay? They'd use drugs and padded rooms to ensure her obedience if she made truly concerted attempts to escape, but that's ok, right? In the end, I'd consider the boyfriend a better option. He educated himself on her condition, and because of his connection to her previous life he was possibly in a better position to recover her mind. Plus the fact that he actually loves her (and supposedly she loved him up until the rape), which is certainly better than the polite detachment she'd receive from psychiatrics professionals and caregivers. It is possible that he "planted" those memories of himself, or rather he gained har trust and enacted those scenes in the previous cycle in a hope to eventually create enough of them to convince her that they were actually dating. I guess it's not that hard to decorate a room to look like a restaurant, or a party. I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know if any of their moments together included other people, whose presense would be much harder to organize. But I'm just sick of the stalker theme in movies. So I'm inclined to believe that Thomas was actually her boyfriend. And it's still possible that he was her assaulter as well: after all it's not unheard of that a boyfriend would assault his girlfriend. Perhaps her raped her, and then tried to "fix" everything by making her forget everything and fall in love with him anew.

@@Tay-vr3be actually, I have another theory about the pills. It is implied that what we saw is not the first iteration of the cycle. Like, how she finds the burnt matches behind a brick, or the messages she leaves herself in the album -- all of those are artefacts of the previous cycles. This means that between the alleged rape and the present moment a long time has passed. It'd already be too late to take contraceptives. My theory is that the previous cycle ended just like this one: she had sex with him, and then ran away. I don't know if I believe Thomas or not: he may be a total scumbag, or... well, not a total one. Maybe what he says is true, and she does have an amnesia. In that case sex might actually be a trigger that resets her memories. But that's a whole different theory.

OK, the fact that I seriously see some comments being even slightly supportive of Thomas' actions is more than a little scary (I mean you can obviously be somewhat sympathetic to Thomas' circumstance but this should not extend to his actions). He has kidnapped her regardless of any previous relationship. This "treatment" is completely contaminated by his self-interest. This self-interest involves not going to jail for killing Nick (that's a bit debatable, depends on the state) and is oriented on getting her love back for HIM (not necessarily focused on getting her memories back for HER sake). You know besides the fact that he took her against her consent and is "treating" her (very loosely defined here) without her consent. So yes, this character is an absolute monster (so explicitly taking someone's freedom and choice away who he supposedly was in love with, ultimately for his own self-interest). Or he could just be lying and is just a crazy sociopathic stalker type.

I mean I get the whole, kill the bad person, help her get her memories back but like… take her to a cabin, give her a damn bed, and not tell her she has to fall in love. Was a bit weird but honestly I’m not upset over the murder bit. Not sure why he pretended to be a stalker instead of just being as honest as possible. Hell just a “found you outside being attacked and helped.” Wouldn’t have been so bad. Then could say you can’t get her to society again until she can walk. Idk I get some of his logic but then not some. It’s scattered. Either help or flee I guess.

Exactly, this should not be romanticized. People need to have lives outside of their partner but being forced in a blank room alone with broken traumatic memories would be torture. She needs the love of her family and friends to cope with what happened, not isolation with a creep. Maybe she did love him before but he ruined things the moment he took control over her whole life.

Totally closed box film. Everything is happening in that same room, down to the ending where he arranged the whole room to look like a hospital room. I think he really did have a loving relationship with her at SOME point in their lives and was obsessed with her, but it’s not clear whether they just dated when they were younger (in HS, college) or if he really was her boyfriend at the time of her attack. He’s done these scenarios to her many, many times, each time trying to find a way to either reprogram her or remind her to love him. When she sleeps too long, her memory gets wiped to a clean slate again. Man, talk about committed! Reminds me of Bucky Barnes lol.

STILL MISSING by Chevy Stevens Read so many thrillers in my life, lost count. But this story stayed with me for a very long time. I expected to find out that it was based on a true story or that the author experienced something similar - that's how good this novel is. Only people who went through something similar can understand how it feels to be 'imprisoned' by another human being. At some point they don't need a lock or threats, once they break you down, they can build you up again - the way they want you to be.
@nefarious_seraph133 жыл бұрын
Why didn’t he just take her to a hospital in the first place?! She might have remembered him with professional help, at the very least she wouldn’t have been scared of him as her kidnapper. Or they could have even started fresh.
@1231mn3 жыл бұрын
Thomas killed Nick (the rapist, 12:43, “Thomas killed the still drunk Nick...”). Having just committed murder (not self defense because Nick was drunk and asleep, so it would be 1st degree murder, or jail time for Thomas. Bringing Ruby to a hospital would evoke questions, and Thomas prison sentence. It’s why Thomas got so upset every time Ruby asked him, “Did you assaulted me?” Which was more PTSD from Nick. Thomas isn’t a bad guy (that is the twist, he is a good character that is introduced as the antagonist at first). He was and still is her loving boyfriend, but he was put in a very tough situation. He’s trying to dodge jail time for killing Nick, and at the same time, performing retrograde therapy on Ruby to regain her memory. His motive is clear, it’s love and not lust (or else he would’ve raped her instead of trying to regain her memory). His wacky scenario seems to be more for a dramatic movie plot though, than necessary. Although, I guess Thomas situation, again, is not typical (he cant have her escape since she’s probably reported as missing), and he could go to jail if the cops interview her. Given those condition, how does he contain her and help her regain her memory? I guess the only logical, and natural thing on her end too, would be to assume that she was kidnapped. How else would you describe a scenario like this to a retrograde victim? No memories, you can’t leave your room or escape for unknown reasons - seems like a kidnapping from first assumptions. Thomas is just trying to keep her contain as he treat her. It’s a pretty good genre between crime and medicine. Lots of depth. Great plot tbh
@nefarious_seraph133 жыл бұрын
Jason Le love may be his motive, still kidnapping. As unhappy as he is, she’s way way way more unhappy. He’s refusing to get her the proper help she needs for his own reasons. He’s protecting himself over her. He’s not a good guy. He thinks he is. But he’s not.
@1231mn3 жыл бұрын
stygianempathy What if she regains her memory, which she has slightly, and realizes that everything that was done was okay by her. It’s the same question of, “would you imprison your partner who you love?” It seems bad because she is in retrograde, but if she had her memory, and loves him enough to have consent to it all, then thats another twist. Whats your thoughts?
@nefarious_seraph133 жыл бұрын
Jason Le I think she still wouldn’t be ok with it. Take away your sympathy for the kidnapping fiancé because we’ve seen his point of view. Imagine you were raped and facing a medical crisis. Instead of getting actual help for you out of concern for your wellbeing, your fiancé kills the man who raped you then kidnaps you. Locking you up in a basement with the belief he’s crippled you for life in an experiment to make you love and remember him again. He’s not a medical expert. He’s just a guy. Maybe she did love him, but does love equal forgiveness? Would she still say she loved him if she really knew what he was like? I say no. Just because she loved him, he loved her, and he killed a person her hurt her, not of that justified the horrors he himself put her thru. That’s why this is a horror film. The twist is he was her fiancé, not that he was secretly a nice guy all along.

@@nefarious_seraph13 Pretty sure you've missed the point of the movie as many others have in these comments but that's ok, you can take your own meaning out of the movie, artistic works are often left up to interpretation anyway. The movie pokes at moral grey areas that are nearly fantasy as they are basically unheard of and combines them into a plot. Would you kill someone to protect the person you love? How far would you go to fight for the person you love? Personally him killing the guy who assaulted her can be seem as both a good and bad action, then him taking her to fight for her while also refusing to let society separate them again is another one of those choices. The movie itself questions us in uncomfortable situations and asks us how far we would go? Personally if it was me I would go as far as I could for someone I loved that deeply. To say he is unquestionably wrong is false, that's your interpretation, just as someone else can look at the same situation and agree with his actions.

To all the people vehemently claiming this is a case of "Stockholm Syndrome". You clearly don't fully understand what it is. In a case of actual Stockholm Syndrome. The victim feels so reliant on their captor. That they believe they can't survive without them. Which is clearly not the case here. Also, the protagonist isn't falling in love with the man because of their day to day interactions. She's doing so with every memory she gets back. Recalling her very genuine feelings for him from their past normal relationship. Ntm she spends most of the film, and all of her flashbacks trying to escape from him. The person she thinks has kidnapped her. Literally the opposite of Stockholm Syndrome! Lol. Smh.

Maybe there are details in the movie that I'm missing in the summary, but dudes first reaction after seeing his "girlfriend" seriously hurt and sexually assaulted wasn't to rush her to the hospital, it was to hold her hostage and research amnesia for dummies? And people think that's good intent. I would just have written it off as a silly movie plot, but as you've pointed out an unsettling number of people think this is alright, or even romantic. He could have taken her to the hospital, reported the assault, and people saying "oh they would have assumed he assaulted her" Why, Rob is a witness to the timeline and an alibi, the hospital would have run a rape kit and Nick's DNA would have been all over her, all dude needed to do was literally drive his traumatized girlfriend to the hospital, and visit her as she recovered. How do people not think this is nuts 🤷🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️

You were right. About 2 months ago I was kidnapped by a guy who liked me but I didn’t like him back. He’d pretend to be my boyfriend and get me food like this guy did to her. He wanted me to like him back. When I didn’t want to hold his hand or kiss him he’d hit me or raise his fist. It was just for two days though and throughout the months he’d stalk my house knew where I lived and worked. As I’m reading the comments. His body was stronger than mine, no matter how much I fought him on it he’d just laugh. But everyone saw him as this nice guy who just liked me. They even asked me why I didn’t just give him a chance. The only way I felt I could survive was to pretend like I liked him back. I was in a city without any family. My ex boyfriend was overseas in the military but we wanted to try again when he got back. That’s the opportunity her took.. the fact I was alone. And the opportunity I took, was the that even though his body was stronger than mine which could easily overpower me and I couldn’t fight him back. I had to use my mind to survive it all. I had to pretend to like him, because then I wasn’t going to get as hurt as I was whenever I repeatedly told him I didn’t like him back, that I was waiting for someone and that I didn’t want a relationship with him. My ex and I got together and made the report. Days later the guy and his friends started driving by our house, and shooting guns outside of it. I’m not scared. Not anymore. So when you wrote this two months ago. You wrote it when it actually did happen to someone.

If he really is her boyfriend and he's really trying to get her memories back, the way he's doing shows that he's doing his best to really milk that one brain cell he has left. Also, he isn't really her boyfriend as I mentioned earlier, then why does he persist to use the kidnap scenario, if he can already corrupt her memories like that 0.0. This movie makes no sense LMAO.

by reading these comments, you can tell people didn't watch the entire video before offering their criticism of the premise.

Also the amount of them who can't even pay attention for long than like thirty seconds to get the name, nor having the ability to check the description.

I wouldn’t try to leave. You’re telling me I get free food, sleep, nothing to worry about besides regaining my memory, practically anything I want, AND a hot guy claiming he loves me? I would fold like a chair.

@@iuprising1551 No, I was obviously kidding. If it actually happened to me idk what I’d actually do though knowing me and how I handle horrific situations I’d examine the area and try to figure out how to get to safety.

I haven't finished the video yet but my theory is that he is her husband and she went nuts at one point and the only way they got her to calm down was brain surgery. And now he is trying to rehabilitate her

In my opinion, He did this because he afraid that by sending to hospital,might make her a new person, and doesn't love him and maybe falling in love with someone else. He think kidnapped her is the best way to avoid outsider involved. the only part I doesn't understand is, After gaining all of her memories being with Him, also after Him explaining everything, why She still want to kill his own boyfriend. If I have remembered that person, I would totally believe it.

"Misery". It was a popular movie. Woman breaks the legs of her favorite author so he won't leave and keeps him locked up and tells him sees his number one fan and is in love with him and addiction to his novels but want him to rewrite the ending. ENJOY!

He should’ve left her at the hospital and hit the road. I understand why he didn’t want to serve his sentence in jail but playing mind tricks on his gf is not love and not help. I even understand that he might’ve loved her so much that it was hard to let her go, but he’s no medical professional. He keeps failing in helping her.

@TheHonestDutch/Irish/Italian guy it's also because he killed the dude so if they called the doctor, the main character would've been sentenced to jail so gotta keep that in mind. But I agree, he played the antagonist and he could've helped her regain her memory in much more efficient way without making himself look like the villian.

Well he had good intentions but the fact he didn’t just take her to the hospital and got a testimony that the reason he killed the guy was self defense instead he did this whole thing 🧍 like you could’ve helped her regain her memory while she was recovering in the hospital 🧍 ya know
