I really hate these studios that are afraid of making R rated movies. They are effectively knee-capping the director's creative talents all so they can get a wider audience and larger profits instead of actually having faith in names like del Toro to pull in that larger audience despite the R rating.
@Syntopikon4 ай бұрын
Especially odd considering the trend of R movies doing well - Logan, Oppenheimer, Deadpool, etc. There's a larger market than they realize. They just need to make the budgets a bit smaller.

An older example is the unfinished 1937 film adaption of Robert Grave’s’ historical novel ‘l, Claudius’ produced by Alexander Korda, directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Charles Laughton. The production was plagued by difficulties culminating in a car accident in London that badly injured female lead Merle Oberon. Another problem was the disagreements between Korda and headstrong actor Laughton. The production had cost UK studio London Films the equivalent of about 50 million US by the time it was abandoned.
@mrbeast853 ай бұрын
I Claudius holds the title of an 'unfilmable film'. But previous holders of the title have been inter alia; Dune, LOTR, Watchmen.... And the BBC managed a masterful TV serial of it in the 1970s (and it really is a masterpiece of TV drama) so I'm not so sure.

I heard(unfortunately don't remember where) that the reason we never got a WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT sequel was that Disney and Amblin/Spielberg were in disagreement for years on which company owned Roger Rabbit. When that got cleared up, both sides figured licensing all the different characters would be prohibitively expensive.

I think I speak for everyone when I say I want a live action Akira as much as I want World War III. I snorted at the "producers wanted romance and a happy ending. Have they read Lovecraft?" remark. I don't think most producers are halfway literate. I would like to see a video on canned DC projects. Here's another development hell story: The Tourist is a science fiction script that's been floating around Hollywood for years. Francis Ford Coppola almost produced it, but it was a causuality of American Zoetrope's collapse.

The only reason to make another Akira is to adapt the parts of the manga that weren’t in the anime, which is what Taika has said he wants to do, but I’m sure if Katsuhiro Otomo wanted that to happen, he would be fully capable of doing that himself.
@Syntopikon4 ай бұрын
Which leads one to think that perhaps a movie isn't the best way to go if an adaptation must be made. A TV series might work better. The recent development also, for some reason, seems to be multi-part movies (The Strangers, Horizon, Rebel Moon, Wicked). I really hope that doesn't end up being the case, as it's more or less been a recipe for bloat.

Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi was the least of Ghost in the Shell [Hollywood] problems. The original character is a brain in a box that changes body with upsetting (to her own sense of self) regularity, so a western face is no biggy. But the character in the movie has maybe 1/8th of the agency that the manga one has, the movie script ignore most if not all of the philosophical implications of AI and cybernetics explored by Mamoru Oshii in the animated movie and the Hollywood script probably has gotten Kenji Kamiyama and the rest of the "Stand Alone Complex" anime serie staff to laugh their ass off at its formulaic plot...
@Scriptadiaboly4 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly
@Zombiesnyder134 ай бұрын
#IBlameAviArad
@mrbeast853 ай бұрын
Yes the issue over Johansson was very overblown. The character in the anime is racially ambiguous and even European coded to some extent (eg having blue eyes). Ironically the character of Batou was actually an example of whitewashing as the explicitly Japanese character was played by Pilou Asbæk, who is Danish IIRC. Although people didn't seem very exercised about that. The film has many things to like about it, notably the visually stunning design, setting and electro musical score. But after a strong first act it then trails off into a boring, predictable origin reveal story with a weak, corporate bad guy that wouldn't be out of place in a 1990s kid's movie. Was a great shame as I think GITS had more to give as source IP.

One example is 4:18 in the video. Every time Atles says "Would you kindly", it's a commend phrase forcing the player character to obey. In the end you (like the pc) are just blindly following the narrative.
