Your critique of Breakfast At Tiffany’s made me laugh. I SO accept this film as the light entertainment that it is, lit by star power. But you are right on with your critique, I must say. The story was conceived as something entirely else. I thought the proposal to remake Casablanca was fascinating. Even with the star power lacking, or, perhaps, because of it, the story would be intrinsically of interest (re-interest). I loved this episode of your Vlog.

One remake I would like to see is Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory but only directed by Wes Anderson. I think the premise of the story and the unique style that Anderson has would make for an interesting spin on the classic story. Also I don’t think Anderson has done a musical before, I think because of that it would stick out differently enough from other Anderson’s work.

LOGAN’S RUN (1976). Based on a dystopian SF novel by George Clayton Johnson and William F. Nolan, the story takes place in a society where no one is allowed to live past age 30 (21 in the novel, one of the many ways the concept was watered-down). With two very attractive leads in Michael York and Jenny Agutter, interesting production design, and one of Jerry Goldsmith’s best scores, the film version was moderately successful, but the flat direction and some really dumb “sci-fi” world building relegate it pretty much to being a ‘70s curio. The novel is an action-packed rollercoaster and nothing very deep, but that’s precisely what makes it ideal for adaptation - just film the damned book and you’d likely have a hit. Since 2000 various directors like Bryan Singer and Nicolas Winding Refn have been attached to a possible remake, but nothing has ever come of it. Johnson died in 2015, but I spoke to Nolan some years ago, who couldn’t believe after all the false starts that a remake still hadn’t happened.

Lolita. I read the book recently and the ONLY way to do it justice is to make it a horror film. The fact that it has been described by hollywood as a "love story" for so long is frankly disturbing, to say nothing of the overt sexualization of Dolores in the movies when she looks and behaves as a regular 12 y/o in the book. The only major failure in Kubrik's career imo. Although I don't think hollywood would be very comfortable making that kind of movie now that a lot of nasty stuff about the industry has come to light.

Which is more interesting, to you? I think the first one, but I don't think you realise this isn't the case for everyone. Isn't sexualising the young girl...the whole point of the story being told from Humbert's point of view, that he has an erotic obsession with her? You seem to be coming from the standpoint of a moralist with a moralistic attitude to art. You take a gaze that sexualises a young girl as an artistic error (b/c you conflate artistic error w/ moral error, perhaps w/o knowing you do) so it's something that's 'wrong' and constitutes failure on the part of the artist when..representing a sexually perverse viewpoint is the whole point of the story, so that in itself cannot be a 'failure', whether the movies is or not idk I haven't seen any of the movies either.

It had a strong story, and many other great things going for it. However, it has many issues. The acting is not bad, but the lead role was intended to be played by an entirely different actress. The movie plays out a bit clumsily, and is a bit overdramatic. I don't know who I'd like to see remake the film, but I think if done right, it could be great. I disagree on lord of the rings being "remade" to have a definitive version, any adaption will take creative liberties in order to fit into the movie structure & would be difficult to follow up on the peter jackson movies but I would like to see the hobbit being remade or adapted again.
@vincenzoberetta10854 жыл бұрын
"Adapt" means to transfer a work in a different medium without losing the spirit of the original. In the book Faramir is the character that represents Tolkien himself in the book: before totally changing it you should be aware of this. In the movie he wants to bring the Ring to Mordor but then frees Frodo *after seeing him almost giving away it for free to a Nazgul*. Eowyn uses "riding along with my King" as an excuse for her real purpose: to die in battle out of desperation. The darkness at the character's core and Aragorn blindness to it are two very important plot points in the book. Only Faramir has the level of insight needed to understand her ( (Aragorn, for example, learns how it is easy to reach not only the wrong conclusion but the most dangerous one - a good lesson for a soon-to-be king). In the movie she is used as a "possible alternative love interest for Aragorn" and that's it. Denethor's folly is much more subtible in the book - and thus more dangerous. He is not a villain but a misguided man driven to desperation by Sauron (notice how this resonates with Eowyn's plight). In the movie we have a game of Dungeons & Dragons in Moria and Legolas shieldsurfing. And so on. Stanley Kubrick once said about adaptation: "Before jumping to 'interpretation' you must understand *what* an author put in his work, and *why*. It should be obvious, but it is amazing to see how many people fail to do this." I agree that the LotR movies are a good example of this. And notice how the original poster agrees that Peter Jackson did A LOT of things right. It is when he deviates from the original material without understanding why things were written in a certain way that he flounders.

I like to see movies remade that have a great or interesting story but didn't work that well the first time round, in other words it should have been a classic but was a box office and/or critical disappointment. Like Night of the Generals (1967), great cast and intriguing story but botched. Others to consider Logan's Run (1976); Welcome to Blood City (1977); The Iillustrated Man (1966); Fahrenheit 451 (never seen the TV series); Krull (1983); Man With the Deadly Lens (1984); Barbarella (1967); Danger: Diabolik (1968)

Quartermass and the Pit alias 5 million years to Earth. Just love the atmosphere and what I call onion peel plotting. It starts with what appears to be an unexploded missile from ww2 only it isn't, and as the plot progresses it gets deeper and deeper into human evolution, alien consciousness and the origins of devil folklore.

The Lord of the Rings movies are some of my favorites and I remember thinking they were some of the best adaptations I'd ever seen... even though I never read the books. Now I'm in a cloud of doubt. You're right that they are kind of Spielbergian but I remember them being better than his work
@nr12292 жыл бұрын
They are very good films, especially the first one, yet not the best adaptations. You should read the books. The best book to film adaptations I know must be Fight Club and Lord of the Flies.

Spielberg is one of the greats so I don't really see anything wrong with that comparison. If anything, the fact that movies have tried to move away from sentimentality and emotion in modern day cinema is part of the reason so many of them feel so lackluster.

you know instead of remaking the timeless classics, I wonder why Hollywood won't remakes the movies which were bad but came with a interesting concept, or the movies which are way too outdated at this point. remaking a bad movie will not only save them from ruining a classic but it will also give them a chance to makes the things rights on what went wrong with that bad movie

My thoughts too. There are only a handful of movies where the remake is considered an improvement (The Thomas Crown Affair) but there are so many duds that one wonders why they persist in doing them.

"The Thing" from the '50s is still a classic, but John Carpenter remade it and created another classic - mostly because he was more faithful to the original short story. A good movie can be remade for a lot of reasons.

Hmmmm. A few ideas: -- No one has ever done "The Great Gatsby" right. The trailers alone for the Baz Luhrmann version are enough to give me diarrhea. But if a new director we haven't yet heard of can bottle the F. Scott Fitzgerald essence and mix it skillfully, we could have a somber romantic-drama masterpiece. -- Give "Saturday Night Fever" to Ridley Scott before he dies. I'm sorry to John Badham, he's an okay director, but it should've been Ridley Scott in the first place. It needed an identity that was less muddled. It also needed someone who could check John Travolta's doofier impulses. -- Give "Weekend at Bernie's" to Kathryn Bigelow. I want to see her do a comedy. -- Give "Last Action Hero" to Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. It could use a quirkier vibe. -- Give "Green Book" to Dave Chappelle. Come at me haters, I have no regrets.

Re- Horror: I fully get the nexus between horror and comedy; however, I don't like the contrived notion of incorporating both into a film, as ''citizens of equal stature". I like horror to have a primary thrust fear factor, and any comedy should be organic, understated, and incidental; no wisecracks or mugging.

Any movie with a good script that failed to reach its potential because of a too low budget, bad acting etc. is worth a second chance with a remake. Another Audrey Hepburn movie that could use a remake is "The Unforgiven". The movie has some really interesting ideas about racism, family bonds, right vs wrong. But it doesn't explore them deep enough. And, I'm sorry, but the idea that Audrey Hepburn could play a Kiowa girl that passes as white is laughable.
