If any of you have watched "Children who chase lost voices", you know how insanely similar it is to Studio Ghibli work. You would be screaming "How is this not a ghibli movie", from the characters design to plot progression to world building, it is just straight up a Ghibli movie. It's directed my Makoto Shinkai and it feels out of place compare to the rest of his portfolio. Highly recommend if you like Studio Ghibli

For me, Flavors of youth is really super similar to studio ghibli in the mood etc, it's a set of 3 short Japanese/Chinese animated films and it's so poetic, you have to watch it if it's not already done (+ there's food and memories exactly like in ghibli movies)

Knew that "Matilda" would be on here, seeing as Roald Dahl is one of Miyazaki's favorite authors and sources of inspiration. I was surprised to see "The Florida Project" but it makes absolute sense. If I were to present any additions, they would for sure include the Wallace & Gromit shorts by Nick Park. Similar to Pixar, Nick Park's claymations are more action-oriented but this is offset by the very Ghibli-esque personalities of its main characters. The 2nd of those shorts, "The Wrong Trousers", is possibly the best short film ever made. Then there's Wes Anderson with his kooky pastel worlds. The example I'll point to is "Moonrise Kingdom", which presents an innocent (or at least as innocent as Anderson can manage) childhood romance with such relatability and rich brushstrokes in its character details.

Some of my recommendations (Though not all of these are movies): 🫐 Mary and the Witches Flower 🐸 Over The Garden Wall 🪡 Coraline 💖 Bee and Puppycat (KZbin) 🧶 Moomin Valley (KZbin) 🐾 Animal Crossing Movie (KZbin) A lot of these movies to me just give me Studio Ghibli vibes because of either the whimsical settings, simplicity, old timey feel, deep undertones, character development, relatable universal experiences, and nostalgia :) I can elaborate on any if anyone's interested in any of these 🤍

I have to recommend Our little sister (2015), it's a beautiful story about family and friendship and everyday life struggles. It's about three sisters who go their father's funeral and they meet their 14 year old half-sister. They decide to invite her to come live with them in their family house. If i remember correctly, the whole movie takes place in the japanese countryside, so there are some really beautiful shots that are reminiscent of ghibli movies. It really made an impact on me when i saw it a few years ago! It's definitely one of my favourites. :')

Kiki’s Delivery Service and Fly Away Home for me 🥰 both have similar pacing, beautiful scenery, and flying with birds 😅 but as well as the plot. Both are about young teenage girls who move to a new place and feel lost. It is through flying to help others that they find peace … and added bonus, Fly Away Home stars Anna Paquin who voices Sheeta in Castle in the Sky so… Ghibli connection! 🥰

Another live action film with amazing food shots and rural japan shots is Our Little Sister by Hirokazu KORE-EDA. Its based on the josei manga 海街diary, and follows the lives of four sisters in their young adulthood. it's slowed paced and more about character growth and relationships than about plot, and it's so sweet. reminds me a lot of when Marnie was there for themes of family and adjusting to life in a new place

I love the movies you recommended, I've seen some of then and was reminded to put the rest in my watchlist because i had heard about them before too! Thank you! An undeservingly little known movie I'm sure has a ghibli vibes is "Song Of The Sea". I came across it by chase one day and watched it with my little sister and mom and they both loved it very much! My sister told me it reminded her of "Spirited Away" and i can definitely see it in the story line and the characters but definitely not the art style which is very beautiful and unique, overall it has that very magical and emotional element i crave! It deals with topics such as illness and family, much like ghibli movies. I hope that who anyone watches it enjoys it greatly :)

Great recommendations, quite a few to add to my watchlist now. I'd also put forward the film 20th Century Women, which is a slice of life film about a young boy who lives with his mother in a boarding house in 1970s California, and his relationship with her, as well as the other residents of the house. Lots of quiet shots of the local natural landscape, plenty of strongly defined female characters (played by the likes of Annette Bening and Greta Gerwig), and a central focus on a young person growing up and trying to find their identity, so the Ghibli vibes should be quite clear. Plus, a period piece set in a boarding house by the seaside is automatically going to draw connections with From Up on Poppy Hill
@LowDoughTech2 жыл бұрын
I would add Tokyo Godfathers, especially during Christmas. It's more "grimy" and grounded than that Ghibli feel, but still amazing, and in my gut, I think it fits.
