Further reflection: It seems like this movie missed an opportunity to go a little deeper. It has a nice profound setup, with Joy's crisis of "nothing really matters". The nihilistic mentality that results from uncontrolled access to everything everywhere all at once. But instead of exploring the answer to the question of "why does anything matter?" they land on "just be kind." Which is nice, but it dodges the question. It just says, "when you don't know what's going on, just be kind." I was hoping they would get into how it matters because of what we are capable of, or how love transcends our reality, or the human soul, or something. *Why* should we be kind in the first place? Why does kindness matter? But they didn't take it that extra step. Still fun and entertaining though.

Interesting point of view. Too me, Jobu Tupaki/Joy gave the answer. If you put everything on a bagel, you learn that nothing really matters. And than again later during "the rock-conversation". In the grand scheme of things (even if there is only one universe), our short little lives don't really matter. But still we exist, so why not just make the best out of it. And being kind to each other surely helps with that (more than being confrontational everything you don't understand/agree with). Accepting what you are can help. Freeing yourself from the pressure of expectations (Evelyn not meting the expectations of her father - or what she thought they would be) can help. Tolerance (excepting that your child is not the way you expected) can help to. That are ofc no new groundbreaking philosophical answers. Most if not all of it we already know. I think what this movie does (or tries to do) is to remind the viewers of that, and maybe act a little more like it every now and then.

I see that as the villain's worldview, which in most stories is eventually countered by the hero's worldview. Of course it isn't true that nothing really matters; a great many things matter tremendously, and hold intrinsic value. If the villain says "nothing matters", it doesn't feel sufficient for the hero to just say, "be kind anyway." If it were true that nothing matters, then kindness is pointless.

the movies message is if nothing we do matters then the only thing that matters is what we do. getting stuck on the "just be kind" is missing the point. waymonds moment is very important, but its not the climax. evelyn and joy in the parking lot is. evelyn succinctly delivers the mentality of nothing matters with the laundry and taxes part. but waymond is the only thing that opens her eyes and keeps her from becoming like jobu. hence her accepting the googly eye on her forhead/opening her third eye. by flipping the laundry and taxes phrase on its head and saying hed have loved doing that as long as it was with her. showing her what matters inside all the meaninglessness. that, is the point of waymonds be kind speech.

We saw in the end that everything *did* matter, though, at least to the multiverse as a whole. Brilliant scientist Evelyn nearly broke the whole thing, and it took "good at nothing" Evelyn, along with Kung Fu Actress Evelyn, Blind Singer Evelyn, Hot Dog Fingers (but very good with her feet) Evelyn, Hibachi Chef Evelyn (without Raccaccoonie), and even Sign-Twirling Evelyn to fix it...plus, of course, Waymond's kindhearted worldview and Jobu Tupki/Joy's need for affirmation. On an individual level maybe nothing we do truly affects the multiverse (or our universe), but what we all do with, against, and for each other is what makes the multiverse (or our universe) go. Cells within your body are living, dying, and being "born" every instant of your life, and you never notice a single one of them. But without them all interacting with each other and going through their individual, unnoticed existences, you wouldn't be you. Without enough of them, you wouldn't be at all.

This is also one of those movies were if you go back and watch it a second or third time, you begin to notice more and more details in the background that you may not have seen before. And it makes the rewatch ability of this movie off the charts. Easily the best movie of 2022.

Yeah. Sadly, this was my first time to this channel, and with a movie like EEAAO, I usually end up leaving subscribed. This is not one of those times. Maybe I'll check out another of her reactions, but the largely disappointed feeling at her not (ironically) delving deeper into the messages the movie portrayed and just looking at it at face value (plus perhaps some already personal bias from an outside source) as a "Bad Trip" as mentioned is just... perhaps too off-putting for me. Good luck to her and her channel anyways. Maybe once she realizes that she can open up more on these reactions, she'll creep across my timeline again and I'll give her another go.

With all the themes, references and ideas that this movie releases into the cosmos, the one thing that stayed with me the most was: there aren't that many movies that touch the topic of "Mother and daughter"? (are there any?? Maybe I'm just blind to them because I'm a dude, I guess "turning red"? which got released at almost the same time ) While the stories and conflicts of father and son are as old as time and some of the most popular movies are about it, the female version feels somewhat invisible. Even the mother/son dynamic is very present in a lot of stories. Its crazy that it took a weird multiverse-kungfu-movie to shed light on this but I felt that it made it very refreshing and elevated the movie.

Yes, I love this. Great point! The mother/daughter theme is very good here. I didn't care for Turning Red as much, but it was also explored in Brave and Lady Bird, or if you want lighter fare there's Freaky Friday and Bad Moms Christmas 😆

I had so many takeaways from the film: nihilism and the reality that even though nothing really matters there is always something that matters, depression/suicide and the signs of reaching out people often miss or misinterpret, the overlooked immigrant family and how beautiful their life story can be, the mother-father-daughter relationship especially that of immigrant parents and children, the importance of kindness and how impactful it can be…etc. The imagery and metaphors were brilliant too. Like the donut (which is actually a theorized shape of the universe) being a black circle with a hole that symbolizes nihilism. And the googly eyes is the inverse of that, being a white circle around a black hole that symbolizes joy and kindness in life. The message is that being empathetic and kind isn’t passive or weak. It’s active and actionable. When faced against an army that tries to kill her at the end it’s Evelyn’s ability (because of Waymond) to empathize with people that saves Joy. It's about fighting violence through love and the fulfillment of others' needs. Having a void in one’s life creates the conditions that makes people tolerate and contribute to willful violence. You can fight fire with fire but the more successful strategy is to fight violence with social connection and need fulfillment. When you can change the minds of the forces by providing them with security and fulfillment, they understand that they're not really fighting out of their own best interest. They're just being used as an expendable part in a system of hate and murder, and when they understand this they retreat or revolt against the true enemy. But perhaps one of the biggest takeaways from Everything Everywhere All At Once for me is its critique on the “alpha male” and "beta male" archetypes, speicifically when it comes to Asian men. Men who are kind, compassionate, and emotional are seen as weak and inferior. This has specifically been used as a trope against Asian men who are often portrayed as the undesirable, weak, love interest who is better off as a friend, or comedic relief secondary character. The "beta" Asian male is never the hero unless they become more like the "alpha" version of themselves. This movie places this exact stereotype front and centre as Evelyn seems to only have her desire for Waymond reignited upon meeting the literal "alpha"-verse Waymond who she sees as an improvement to her own Waymond. The alpha-verse Waymond even states "what a weak body" during the first fight scene. Yet, as the movie concludes, we see that the truly desirable partner and the true hero of the film (who has been the hero all along) is this universe's Waymond. And also there’s like an appreciation of the skillsets of all types of workers. The sign spinner holds a strength that Evelyn lacks. The singer holds a strength that Evelyn lacks. The cleaner holds a knowledge that Evelyn lacks. 3 jobs that often are seen as either inferior or not “real jobs” all hold skills that this universe's Evelyn needs in order to succeed.

Very simple story, a husband trying to save his marriage, mother trying to connect with daughter. When the husband drafts the mother to find the daughter they make a connection at the end. The outfit changes of Joy where outstanding (walking with a pig in a golf outfit). Overall a very sweet movie.

New to your channel. Just stumbled upon this by accident or KZbin algorithm. Since you did not really react to the movie, I was hoping you would have a summary recap at the end to indicate what worked or not worked for you. I noticed you were not reacting to most of the jokes. Besides being grossed out by the hotdog universe, how did you feel about everything else? Depending on the ages of your children, would this be something you would ever show them? The movie is basically a relational drama between a mother and daughter but sprinkled with insanity and martial arts goodness. There is also generational trama between mom and daughter and grandfather and daughter. As a mother, I think it would be nice to hear your perspective on these matters. So, a little disappointed I did not hear more from you...

Hello! Great points! Sorry my reaction disappointed. I think it was sensory overload; I was mostly just trying to keep up with what was happening, and forgot to comment as much this time 🥲😬. I really did love the martial arts stuff, and tried to comment on that. It’s interesting doing this because-similar to parenting-I often find myself checking my words before I speak. I don’t want to just comment everything that I’m thinking; people will either love what I say, or hate it. But trying to be too neutral also disappoints. As for not commenting from a Mother’s perspective, my kids are all too young for that theme in this story to be very relatable to me yet. I’m sort of between Joy and Eleanor’s places in life, but from the daughter perspective, I’m not comfortable vocalizing my thoughts, for personal reasons. (What if my mom were to watch this??😅) Hopefully sometimes I have interesting things to say, but I know sometimes I don’t. And sometimes a movie makes me think, and it could be days before I’ve processed all my thoughts. That’s why I love reading everyone’s comments to help me sort through my own thoughts on it. Thanks for watching, and for your comment!

Everything Everywhere All at Once Release Date * March 24, 2022 (Malaysia) Genres 1. Action 2. Adventure 3. Comedy 4. Fantasy 5. Sci-Fi Ratings * 95% Rotten Tomatoes * 88% Audience Score Production Co * A24 (NYC-based independent film company) Directors 1. Daniel Kwan (34) 2. Daniel Scheinert (35) Main Cast 1. Michelle Yeoh (60) as Evelyn 2. Ke Huy Quan (51) as Waymond 3. Stephanie Hsu (32) as Joy 4. Jamie Lee Curtis (64) as Deirdre 5. James Hong (93) as Gong Gong 95th Academy Awards (Oscar) * 11 Nominations Budget * $25 million Box Office * $106 million (2/08/2023) Fun Facts * Initially, the directors offered Jackie Chan (68) the lead role, which he turned down. * Subsequently, the directors cast Michelle Yeoh (60) and Ke Huy Quan (51) and gender-swapped the story. * The mother-daughter dynamic is more compelling than the father-daughter conflict or father-son conflict. My Review * Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once is a movie about nothing. More precisely, nothing matters. * At first, I was not too fond of the movie. The “over-the-top” humor was too much for my sensibility. On the surface, it is a tired story about a dysfunctional multi-generational Chinese family in America. Underneath, it is about “nihilism” across the multiverse. * I notice more on each rewatch: (1) the set design, (2) the symbolism of circles everywhere, (3) the range of acting, and (4) the fight choreography. I realize that the over-the-top humor was intended to shock the viewers out of complacency and to think “outside the box.” * Michelle Yeoh, the lead actress, gave the performance of her life. Jamie Lee Curtis, a supporting actress, was hilarious. Stephanie Hsu, a supporting actress, gave a breakout performance. Ke Huy Quan, a supporting actor, gave an award-winning performance. Ke was the 12-year-old Chinese boy in Indiana Jones 2 but quit acting to be a stunt coordinator. * Everything Everywhere All at Once led all 2022 films with 11 Oscar nominations.

Far be it from me to judge people, but everytime someone says they home school I can't help but feel sorry for the kids. Not only because of the obvious reason, home schoolers seemingly having a tendency to be nutters, but also for the reason that home schooling is illegal here: taking a lot of potential interaction and socialisation with other kids away from kids is problematic in the best of cases and abuse in the worst.

Joy is struggling because she is a stubborn mess, like most of us. She will never be much good at anything, or at least we don't even see her going to work anyplace during this movie. But Joy is miserable in the presence of Evelyn because Evelyn, like all Moms, wants her kids to grow up to be successful, and Evelyn is still trying to whip Joy into shape even after Joy has left home and is living out on her own. Evelyn feels as if she has failed Joy. Joy feels as if she has failed Evelyn. Together, they are miserable and hurt each other deeply. What moments they do have together could be treasured if both of them accepted what Joy had grown up to be and just be kind to each other rather than constantly being at war. My problem with this message is that people will not truly strive for greatness absent somebody wielding a switch to their behind. Achievement is not obtained by simply being kind to everybody. If your kid grows up to be a lawyer, but never sits on the SCOTUS, is he or she a miserable failure? Parents, teachers, coaches, and peers all must crack the whip to some degree to get their kid, student, athlete, of friend to put in the work and make the personal sacrifices necessary to experience some reasonable degree of success in life. The movie could have been better if it acknowledged that aspect of life in some way. Did you realize that by the end of the movie both Evelyn and Joy had "achieved" Jobu status. Both cold have jumped to any other verse, but chose to remain with each other. It's a preview of the final scene in the IRS building where Evelyn is simply happy to be there, surrounded by her family.

Well again that will be forcing your kids if your kid really want to be something they will do it eventually, but putting pression on them will not help them it will just discouraged them and If they happen to failed for exemple to become a doctor wich is totally okay those study are hard they will just feel like they failed life because they patents will be disappointed. Plus not everyone care about "that some degree of success " and also let's not forget that we don't leave in a meritocratic world.

Never understood how this movie caught fire when it was so difficult to grasp the first time. Only when I watched a few reactions the film makes some sense. I think the directors could have done a better job of explaining the multiverse and how it works in the movie, becos it only occurred to me, they had to do something unique to jump multiverses. If they had done that, I think it would have made a better film to sit through. I'm not a fan of films you have to watch more than once to appreciate, it's too much work for me, films are meant to be entertaining not make you lose braincells...lol
