i was riding home from work this week and i saw a man by the side of the road selling coturnix quail. I love eating quail eggs and quail meat so i bought some, went and bought some cages and bought some more, i know have 10, i think maybe 8 hens and 2 cocks. Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to make these videos, they are very useful. Already had 6 eggs from them, looking forward to more to come when they get over the stress of moving

Awesome. I am so glad you find my videos helpful. As you mentioned, they will probably stop laying for a while because of the move. Also, depending on where you live you need to add some light to make sure they have 14 hours a day of light (in my area yesterday was only 9.5 hours of daylight). Good luck with your new birds.

@@Slightlyrednecked yeah i actually live in saigon vietnam, and because it's near the equator we don't get long days, so i am giving them extra light after it goes dark. i guess the quail farms here must be doing that I've had 6 delicious eggs off them already, hoping when they settle in i'll be getting more

I use to use heat lamp but went to a reg 60 watt bulb in brooder in the house and they been just fine last 3 batches has been fine, and no fear of house burning down either cover on top of a large storage bin gapped for the light also to fit in there...move out to garage at three weeks and Im in mn. cold winters -20

Thank you . I tried to move my 2 weeks baby quail out from brooder box without thinking of not fully grown feather and temperature, found he was shivering after 1-2 hours and like dying. Freaking out, I moved him back to the brooder box and gave it a few hours and prayer, he survived and back to usual himself! I was so scared I wld kill him!! Just keep tabs on the temperature. 20 days old fully feathered jumbos can handle 40 F at night outside on wire just fine.

I live in ct. It's late june now. My quails just hatched 7 days ago. At 5 days i didn't like seeing them running over their own poops. So i took them outside pen and they are doing fine. They walk over 1/2 inch wire fine too.

Actually i had to temp scares. The first was after 1 day down to 72 degree. The second with the same batch was at 13 days down to 85 degree due to light bulb blowout. Now i put 2 light bulbs to be safe.

I just wanted to tell you I find all your videos amazingly informative. I am gathering everything to start my own small colony of coturnix. I invested in a couple of Wynola Ranch cages. I have a basement room I plan to keep them once they are feathered out. In winter the lowest it will get is 55 degrees. Too many predators in my location to keep them outdoors safely with Bobcats and Fisher Cats no matter how secure a cage I have. I will have all that I need shortly and plan to order eggs soon. I am a little wary to buy the eggs and have them ship in winter since its almost December right now. Is it a gamble to have eggs shipped this time of year? I could wait until spring or should I buy extra eggs now and plan on a low hatch rate? I kind of have a green thumb for multiplying living things. I am a little nervous about the culling thing later on but I am pretty sure I can do it after watching your other videos.

Depending on where you order eggs from and where they will travel to get to you, you could just check the weather report for that area (or areas) and if it isn't going to be too bad for the next week go ahead and order.

Schedule? What schedule! :D I was given two hatch-ling quail, and I'm not even sure how old they are! The two are in my aquarium-brooder, and seem quite happy there for now. They were the size of your 2.5wk birds when they were given to me, but it is a week later and they're nearly twice the size but still holding on to a bit of their down feathers on the head and breast. I can't say these two are fully feathered as such. :S So I'll think about moving them outside whenever they lose the baby-down or they outgrow the aquarium-brooder. We'll see which happens first!

Yeah, they grow incredibly quick. Nothing wrong with keeping them in the brooder longer, it is just more maintenance and work so I like to move them out as quickly as I can.

It the winter time I always give them until about 3 weeks old before moving them outside. Like you said, wait until they feather out completely down low. Good luck with your birds.

Had a problem with the feeder myself they got stuck so had to take them to a different feeder. Was looking to make a outside brooder if possible. For now i use a reptile tank worked ok but have to clean it more often and is not so great during winter as iv to keep them in there for longer

My quail are over 2 weeks old and they are still needing feathers. The wing feathers look full but their backs are red skin and no feathers. They are Texas A & M .

That is pretty normal. Give them just a little bit longer and they will feather out. Sometimes it takes them longer to get all of their feathers in.

My weather doesn't know what it's doing Right now. Lol yesterday we had snow today it's 54 so I'm afraid to put mine outside at all when they hatch. Hi mate, I'm in Bristol. 3 weeks should be ok, but they would need to be weaned off the heat inside from 2 week point. If they go straight from heated and indoors to outdoors with no heat you might lose a some. I've got some chicks at the two week point at the moment, I turned off their heat yesterday and will put them out next weekend

We only have 4 two week old baby hen quails coturnix were seeing they want to stay in the safe box and not wanting to get feed or water on the other side what would you suggest? This is in our new hutch we built like yours the newer hutches that is. This is also their first time to the feel of hardcloth wire bottom also since the brooder where they were in pine shavings. Our temps or 80-90 highs now lows upper 60’s-70

I don't know that I would worry about it too much. They should find it on their own. If you need to you can block off the access to the sandbox for a day and force them on the other side of the hutch. But that should be all that you need to do.

They look a little crowded in the pen. What sort of disinfectant do you use to spray and clean the cages each week? I use to use Jeyes fluid here or even a dettol like spray with my chickens.

I don't clean the cages every week. When I do clean them out I just use water with a bit of bleach in it. And then rinse it well. I don't find that I need to do any more than that.

Hey man i have some questions about quail, and im sorry if you already have answered these but i rly want to know. I live in norway and i am currently incubating 15 quail eggs, and i was hoping that once they were done i could move them outside. I am not an expert on this so i have some questions about that. 1: will cold be any problem in the winter (it can get about -20 centigrees here) and i will i need any artificial light/warmth for them. Secondly off i was thinking about stacking hardware cloth cages for them, and i was wondering if there is anything specially i need to know about having them in such cages, and secondly off what should i do about them in the winter? Since it will snow and such should i just cover the cages with something? As you can tell im mostly worried about them in the winter time :p. And i was also wondering in cages with 60 cm deep and 2 meter long how many quail do you think i can/ should keep there? Btw sorry for spelling mistakes i wrote this one my phone and im lazy so i won't go through and check Thx :P

Well they should do fine in the winter as long as they have a wind break. cover the cages so they are not open to the wind. As far as needing light or warmth, not unless you want them to lay eggs in the winter time. If you do want eggs they will need at least 14 hours a day of light. And a you should be able to fit from 12 to 15 quail in a cage that size pretty easily. Hope that helps.

You would have to leave some eggs in there for sure but even that won't guarantee it. it is pretty rare for a quail to go broody (at least a coturnix quail).

I wouldn't hesitate to start 50 eggs. You probably won't get all of them to hatch but if you do get a lot of birds you can keep them in that size pen until it is time to butcher the extras and eat them. On other note, if you can find birds locally you can usually buy week old chicks for about $1 per bird. Just a thought.

According to the numbers I've gotten on several hatches, 28. Here's the breakout: 50 eggs set 40 eggs after candling (optional) (19% reduction) 40 eggs going into lock down 32 hatched quail (82% of lock) 28 make it through brooding (10% post hatch mortality - includes those that just don't make it plus culling of genetic abnormalities, wry neck, star gazing, bad club foot, splay leg etc.) 28 to grow out 0% morality on grow out aviary 14~ hens + 14~ roosters If you have good light (12-14+, so either not winter or with light in the coop) you will have roosters start crowing at 6~ weeks. If you have them close to the house or neighbors that may be bothered, I cull out roosters then. Yield is a little less than 8 weeks (about 5 to 5.5 oz dressed at 6 weeks for jumbos), but the significant decrease in crowing to me is worth the sacrifice. It seems exponential that if you have tons of roosters they will crow because others are crowing - the difference between say 4 roosters and 14 roosters is like night and day. I let the hens grow out until 8 weeks and/or until I have enough laying hens. So with 50 eggs, I would expect to harvest 10-11 roosters, keep 3-4 roosters, and keep 14 hens. Numbers could be plus or minus a couple based on the gender distribution of your hatch. Also, this is going to be slightly higher with eggs that are not shipped or are shipped very well (i.e. quickly, short distance, gentle, etc.). It may be slightly lower with distantly or roughly shipped eggs, a poor incubator, a bad brooder, or other quality factors. It might be slightly higher if you have local or fresh eggs, high fertility rate eggs, a great incubator, a great brooder, and so on.

Wow. Is that the temperature or the wind chill? and is that in C of F. Assuming that it is C and is the windchill not the actual temperature, they are probably fine to go outside. If it is the actual temperature and is F, that is very cold. I know many people have raised them in very cold environments but I don't have personal experience with weather that cold. I think they would be ok if they were acclimated to the temp change properly and weren't plunged from 75 degree indoor temps to -15 outdoor temps

Interesting. It sounds like the temp might have been a little low. I haven't had that problem myself with 3 week old quail but i always make sure to ween them off of the heat lamp in the garage for a few days before moving them outside. I don't know if you did that or not but that might be the issue.

Mine stay outside all winter long and we get colder than that. if you have a place that is slightly warmer but cooler than your room to move them to for a week first that might be best. But they will probably be fine either way.

Coturnix are not native to north america so that is a VERY destructive idea to release them. That said, native bobwhites only have a 10-20% survival rate when released.

Temp in va right now are upper 50 to 66. My quail are 3 weeks. I take it it’s ok to move them outside?

It should be fine. You may want to give them a few days in a garage or something if you can to acclimate a little slower but I wouldn't be too concerned myself.

Slightly Rednecked I’ve had them in basement for a week without the heat lamp. Gets a lot warm in late afternoons when sun hits back of the house

What part of VA do you live? it's like 70 - 80 here in richmond at night. also they should be fine. I brought my quails out when it was around 50's at 3 weeks.

I suppose mine is different in one respect. I do 4 stages instead of 3. 1. Brooder box (clear plastic tote) 2. Garage pen 3. Grow out pen 4. Breeding pen. I even want to add 5th stage next year. When they hit 8 weeks, I want to put my "best candidates" or the largest (those I haven't butchered from the grow out pen) in small cages (3-1 ratio) to see which females are laying and which Males are crowing and breeding. That way I don't waste time and feed on "useless freeloaders".

Nothing wrong with that plan at all. I should add that after the grow out pen I do the same thing by moving the best ones to the breeding pen (if i am looking for more breeders).
