I lost my mother a few years and she left me a house, several times I tried selling the house,i couldn't wait to make enough money to be able to move out of here. I was forced to live here because I had no choice .i hated it here I felt stuck and I was so unhappy.😢So much work needed to be done on the house and I couldn't afford it so I would just hide where I live from my friends because I was so ashamed . Then last year I found a video of you buying a cabin in the woods and in that moment I realized how blessed I was . You helped me accept my situation with gratitude and to start to appreciate my rural life even more , you turned a life I once hated into a life I can't wait to wake up to document. And the way you fix things around your cabin, it's like you see something you don't like, you change it, I felt so inspired and I took up my first project in my rural cottage, and I couldn't be more proud , I realise there's so much more fulfilment in building /fixing stuff yourself So Thank you Hannah, The world needs more of you ☀️💚

I think it's a generational thing. I was just like Hannah when I was young. A go-getter, risk-taker and full of energy. The trick for me was avoiding sketchy areas. I made a couple of mistakes along the way but managed to survive, like walking through a gravel pit at 1 AM in Sicily, Italy because I missed the tram that took us down the mtn to the hotels. That was an adventure, lol. Mostly though I used my common sense and traveled around with people I knew and trusted, for ex. God watches over dumb people my mom used to say. Sigh. Anyway, stay safe Hannah!

A tip from someone who used to leave their house for long periods of time - plug all your drains before leaving to stop evaporation. Water traps in the plumbing keep all the sewage stink from seeping into the house, and they can evaporate in sinks and toilets left for a longtime without use

It looks very cozy. Depending on how cold it gets there in the winter you might want to consider adding a layer of insulation on top of the current floor and then cover with plywood before adding whatever flooring you choose because the carpet was also acting like insulation to keep the cold temperatures from the ground affecting the temperature inside the cabin. I am probably explaining it wrong. I live in a house built in 1941 and you can definitely tell what the original owner/builder did and the materials he used. We don’t know what happened to him or if it was related to WWII , but the house was sold unfinished and the second owner didn’t use the same quality of materials and wasn’t as skilled as the first one. The house has gorgeous thick oak floors that over time were covered up by carpet. In the room off the kitchen they put linoleum right on the gorgeous oak flooring and because it probably has asbestos in it we can’t remove it and you can’t hire someone to remove it without removing the oak flooring. In the areas that we removed the carpet we did notice a big change in temperature especially in the winter. We added insulation to the underside in the crawl space and root cellar which made a big difference. We really need to add insulation in between the upper floor’s flooring and the ceiling from the first floor to deaden the noise transfer between them.
