Karen Moynihan in Ireland caught grief for going to the Ploughing for 1 day and a short vacation with her husband. Are farmers never supposed to get away??? That's nuts! Glad you got to go!

Breaks my heart when I see solar on land that used to be for agriculture. Dairy farm I grew up on has had plans put in for a huge solar farm on it, surely if land was good enough to support a 240 cow dairy farm it should still be used for producing food? Solar should be on roof tops.

Yes I agree to a certain point, but it’s worth remembering the land, hedges and habitat are still there , around here we lost approximately 150 acres to housing in the last 10 years, and are still losing it, I know people need to live somewhere but when they build houses and roads by en large the land, hedges and habitat are completely destroyed that has evolved over hundreds of years, what’s the worst evil, I wonder. ??

Well done for having a great crew of mates and the foresight to plan fun times together! Knockers will always knock.. They're the kind of people who'd moan because bits get damp during intimacy 😎 For the thistles, topping in the rain can help control them, as the rain helps to rot the stems. Something different to try, again on a rainy day, put the hay tedder on and give them a smashing. A hay mower is too kind/clean. The idea is to bruise and batter them, causes decay. Keep saving, for a trip to New Zealand ☺️

Morning Richard, everyone needs a break, and if you save a little money every week for five or ten years then you certainly deserve that holiday, I guess most who have negative comments regarding you or any farmer that takes a holiday probably have set working hours every week. Enjoy yourself and continue to do what pleases you. Best wishes stay safe and healthy.

Re your comment on seeing animals in the countryside, I’ll never forget when the big foot & mouth outbreak happened and we were on holiday up in Yorkshire. The fields were all empty of animals and it just felt like desolation. Very sad times.

Personally the best thing to do would be to spray off that felid then plough restart with some fresh grass seed from there etc. if not you could do a weed wiper across the felid that way will knock back the bigger weeds like nettle thistle stingers etc and leave the grass etc

I’m afraid most of those thistles have gone to seed so won’t absorb the herbicide like a young plant would. You could direct drill your herbal leys today, apply glyphosate after it’s drilled (up to 6 days later) then apply the ground limestone and the fertiliser still this year. Not too late yet.

i think it's each to there own ........some people like there holidays and fair enough go for it if you can ...... for me i'm not that bothered about holidays but a new car would be nice but not that bothered or a new tractor would be nice but i also think it's good just to be happy with yourself and what you've got in life........happiness is a state of mind and buying a holiday or a new car isn't necessarily going to give you long term happiness. you got some lovely looking cattle there Richard.....British Friesians are a fine breed of Dairy cattle ideal for the low input grazing system .......Ayrshires aswell are very similar in that there well suited to outdoor grazing system. i'm not keen on the modern robot milking idea where cow's have to stay in all the time just so they can be milked multiple times a day

Richard, it sounds like the Trolls are on their computers without their appropriate adults again. They're a small number of simpletons who, if they picked a Fiver up in the street, they would complain because it wasn't a Tenner.

Some folks are just thick. Farmers don’t get holidays. They get away to on a break. To calm down and. Mentally recharge for the oncoming winter that put so much stress. On farmers Other folks get two three holidays a year. Richard’s. Bugger them. You do what you do buddy. Farmers. Need a break. From farming.

re: the chickens; do you have a rooster in there with them to make them broody? I can't tell and don't remember if you had one and something happened, or 'm just clueless (i don't have any chickens lol but I do follow some chicken groups) and rooster's aren't required to make the hens broody! The cattle are looking great though, nice and round, and everyone looks happy. Sorry about the travelers, they add so much extra work/chores :/ wish you could do something about them easily. Also sorry about stupid people- clearly they're lacking knowledge on how real life works! But I think it's awesome that you and your friends have set up the savings account thing, which helps fund the vacations.

Couple things Richard ... As hard as farmers work (especially dairy farmers) You deserve all the vacations you can get.! In America we grow field corn and sweet corn they're two different things. Field corn is really not human edible and is grown for silage for animal feed. Sweet corn has a much higher sugar content and is what is grown for human consumption. If you've ever had sweet corn the taste of field corn is disgusting.

Don’t forget, you always can sell the hey you do not use for income. Will help you on the farm that you want to fix up the garage. You put the calf into and it’s so low you could build the garage to make it easier to clean the I just thought maybe you wanna make it better for your animals small animals change things on the farm. I have a crashing mask. Have you gone around? Cut the poison ivy out of the tree do you want to grow back and it will try it will grow back trust me because the poison ivy. The vines in the tree is taken the tree water away from it stop growing and it dies cause it’s not getting its water if you don’t trim poison ivy just cut the bottom off of the poison ivy now then alone for your dry up.
