What a wonderful cottage and location. Longer term I could very much see you raising the roof above the kitchen and joining it properly back into the main cottage. That way you could put a stairs where the bathroom is to access both rooms. This would remove the need for the spirals, give you a much more useable space in the third bedroom and allow you to put an upstairs en-suite in and a maybe even a great window for bedroom three with a Juliette balcony. The best forever home. ❤️
@TwoMenTheirDogАй бұрын
Thank you, Carla! 😊 We absolutely love the vision you have for the place-raising the kitchen roof and adding a proper staircase could open up so many possibilities, especially with the third bedroom and an en-suite upstairs. A Juliette balcony would be stunning, too! It’s definitely something to dream about for the future, and we’re so glad you can see the cottage’s potential as a forever home. ❤️

Wonderful guys. Just wonderful. Having moved and renovated a number of older properties, I would say breath and give yourselves time to see just how things flow and give yourselves time to settle and recover from the stress of moving. You will make a fabulous job but you can live with it all for a good while. Then know how the light works and how you really, really want the rooms to finally be. ⭐️

Thank you so much, Jill! 😊 That’s such great advice. We definitely plan to take our time and really settle in before making any big changes. It’ll be good to see how the light flows through the rooms and how we naturally start using the space. After all the stress of moving, we’re looking forward to just enjoying the cottage for a while! Thanks again for your kind words and wisdom!

Definitely. We moved into a 200 + year old house 20 months ago and we have worked quite fast but also changed our minds about what we wanted, so it's best not to rush it. I would also like to paint the kitchen a different colour, but as it was only done a year ago, I'm not sharing that with my parther yet!

Sounds like you’re well into the journey, David! It's funny how minds change once you live in a space for a bit, right? We're taking the same approach, trying not to rush things and enjoying the process (even though I might be quietly dreaming of some new colours too 😉). Thanks for sharing, and best of luck with the continued work on your home-it sounds like you're doing an amazing job!

Welcome to Scotland! The cottage is lovely ❤it’s so clean and bright. I am fascinated by the spiral staircase in the kitchen, my Dad worked for decades at the Singer sewing machine factory in Clydebank. He was a metal worker. Do you know anything about the history of the staircase, did it come from the factory in one piece or was it put together and made into a staircase for the cottage? All the very best guys!
@TwoMenTheirDogАй бұрын
Thank you so much for the warm welcome! 😊 The cottage is slowly starting to feel like home. 🏡 As for the spiral staircase, it’s such a fascinating piece, isn’t it? The previous owners told us it has connections to the Singer sewing machine factory, but we don’t know the full history. It’s amazing to think it might have ties to Clydebank-your dad’s work as a metalworker must have been incredible! 🔧✨ We’d love to find out more about its story, so if we learn anything new, we’ll be sure to share. Thanks so much for your kind words and support! ❤

@@TwoMenTheirDog Thank you so very much for getting back to me. I am living on my own with Madge, in an isolated rural place, which I love, and I so appreiceate your response, as I see very few human beings. Congratulations on the new home. I love the spiral staircase in the kitchen. I have had the fridge/freezer next to the ovens for a few years now and it has never been a problem. You will get used to it. I made the fridge look like it was meant to be there rather than looking like an afterthought by putting a shelf unit above the fridge made from timber matching the bench tops. Great place for the cook books.

I'd Connect the two Roof spaces and get rid of the Staircase in the living room, just use the kitchen one as access. move the window in the large upstairs room to the opposite side and make it a large velux to balcony opening window. and extend into the roofspace over the master ensuite to add an upstairs ensuite as plumbing would be easy to extend from the ensuite below.. The stone wall with the damp was most likely built using traditional earth and lime mortar between the stones which will now collect the damp due to the pait on the exterior causing a seal so it cant breathe. Scrape out the earthy mortar on the inside and replace it with a heat limestone mortar to let it breathe but seal the interior from damp.. Lovely cottage and gardens with so much potential.
@TwoMenTheirDog2 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your suggestions, Bear! 🙌 We’ve actually considered some of those ideas, especially connecting the roof spaces and sorting out the staircase. The Velux to balcony window sounds like a fantastic idea, and extending the upstairs ensuite is definitely something we’ll keep in mind-would make such a difference! You’re spot on about the damp stone wall too; we’ve already started looking into removing the exterior paint and repointing with lime mortar to let it breathe again. Really appreciate your thoughtful input, and we’re excited to see how it all evolves! 😊
@AdamofCA.2 ай бұрын
Connecting the roof space was an eye opener for me. I need to ponder more on that interesting idea. Hopefully some thought will also be considered toward expanding the upper rooms with a wide dormer window that allows the Scotts men to stand up straight to see the view. Am not a fan about eliminating an access for the long house. The only acceptable exception to the 2 fire exits is if a single exit is in the MidDle of a long structure.
@TwoMenTheirDog2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Adam! 😊 Connecting the roof spaces has definitely sparked some interesting possibilities for us too. A wide dormer window would be fantastic-especially to get that view while standing tall! We appreciate your point about fire exits as well. Safety is always a priority, so we’ll make sure to keep that in mind if we make any changes. Lots to consider, but it’s exciting to imagine! 🏡✨
@bearmascall6772Ай бұрын
@@AdamofCA. Hey Adam, Thats why I suggested the Velux balcony style window, it opens full human height and width a bit like a french window in the roof, this of course also works as a fire escape as you could easily jump down the single story to ground level in an emergency (You could even throw the mattress out first as something soft enough to land on ) and if the Guys decide to put a Dorma window there, I would still put an actual french window into the dorma, firstly it's lovely for letting in maximum light, you can open it on warm days or even warm nights when they occur, but again, it works as an emergency exit from that side of the property, so they would only require the one staircase from the current Kitchen... you are right that emergency Egress is important.

Just wanted to say huge congrats guys. You did it. The cottage is way nicer than it appeared on first glance - still hate that spiral staircase though! The kitchen one is so nice that it makes the other one look even worse. For me, the high points were the gardens and most of all, the courtyard off the bedroom! Adam will make that so wonderful. I used to have a courtyard garden off my bedroom in my flat in London, right about the same time, and it was absolutely my pride and joy. Sleeping with that door open in the summer will be a delight, and a log burner with a TV over that fireplace, what a dream! Also thinking about that outhouse, wouldn't that be a great laundry room next to the garden, so you don't have to have your much hated washing machine in the kitchen with all the noise it makes? We put a laundry into our entrance hall and will be covering it all in big doors. Also I have some info about your damp wall. Are you on insta so perhaps I could send you a private message?
@TwoMenTheirDog2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much, David! We’re over the moon to finally be here, and we’re glad the cottage has surpassed your expectations. The courtyard off the bedroom is going to be Adam’s little paradise, for sure! Totally with you on sleeping with that door open in the summer-it’ll be amazing. The log burner and TV idea sounds perfect too, it’s definitely something we’re considering. And yes, we’ve been thinking about converting the outhouse into a laundry room-that would be a dream setup, and free up the kitchen! We’d love to hear more about the damp wall situation and any advice you have-feel free to reach out to us on Instagram. Cheers! instagram.com/benjis_newmore/

Totally agree with you about the benefits of a graveyard as your next door neighbor. I would certainly appreciate it, anyway😊 Good idea to not do any major changes just yet...see how your daily routines work with the present layout and plan for the future. The turned spindles of the middle upstairs bedroom look like they're from the church, too. Happy for you, but sorry for the stripped out church.
@TwoMenTheirDogАй бұрын
Thanks, Mark! 😊 We feel the same way about the peacefulness of having a graveyard next door-it’s strangely comforting! And you’re absolutely right; we’re taking our time to settle in and see how the space works with our routines before making any big changes. The turned spindles do have that church feel, don’t they? It’s a bit bittersweet, knowing some pieces may have been repurposed from the church, but we’re happy to give them a new life here. Thanks for sharing in our journey!

Well that was worth waiting for boys. Love the cottage! Much bigger than I expected. The front "posh" garden is lovely and will be stunning next spring and summer. I adore the Singer spiral staircase! I quite like the living room one too. But I think I would hire a metal worker to recreate the Singer staircase for the living room. I think that it would look amazing with the ideas you have for the living room. Many congratulations. The smiles on all three of your faces were good for the soul :)

@@TwoMenTheirDog... a 2nd thought . . . another option is to switch the staircases. The singer all-iron stairway seems too bold for the kitchen. The white stairway (currently in the living room) would blend in better in the kitchen.
@TwoMenTheirDog2 ай бұрын
That's an interesting suggestion, Adam! We've thought about various options, and switching the staircases could be a creative solution to better balance the spaces. The Singer staircase does have a bold presence in the kitchen, while the white one could blend more subtly. For now, they're staying put, but we’ll definitely keep all options on the table as we plan things out. Thanks for the idea!

I love the cottage..nice quiet neighbours behind the master bedroom!!LOL am wondering if you could work a door from the 3rd bedroom to the 2nd and eliminate the not so nice spiral stair from the living room that would make a better access to the bathroom for guests. I personally dont like that stair in the living room. As for the damp wall..if its had cement put on it then the wall cant breath ..also maybe some gutter issues there. Anyway its a great wee cottage and looking forward to what you will do over time..Benji is a true labrador..nose to the ground and he has a happy place now

Hi Fellas. Good for you.. With our selves in highland many have opted for a MULTI FULE BURNER.. This comes with a recessed water tank as part of the stove..As the stove heats a pump pushes the hot water round your system to make hot water for showers and sinks, as the hot water created, goes back to the main water tank that supply's the cottage.. This system can work also in conjunction with oil system ...When water is being heated so the stove dose most of the work or as a stand alone system....See what you think!! A lot of folks have used a company locally known as bonk and co in Inverness but their are many multi fuel stoves on the market not just the wood burning type..... Kindness fellas your way..
