Hey so I recently made a tail using this method and I wanted to tell you all my variations. My tail is for an android 21 cosplay. Before I started I read the comments here and saw Queen Makokitty' s yoga mat idea and since I had one that I dont use, and I wanted my tail to be very long, l went with that. I traced my yoga mat tail pattern onto eva foam to use a stencils cut into three separate peices and then used that to trace onto the foam. I used old couch cushions I already had in my garage for the foam. It's probably high density not low but it worked. Since the foam was very thick and I didn't want my tail to be I used a bread knife to cut it in half. I think the bread knife worked 10 times better than a regular knife or box cutter becasue it made for use on a similar material to the foam. I spent hours carving my six (three on each side) large peices with a knife and scissors to make them round and thin and fit together with oneanother. I then divded the foam stencils into 11 sections and used that to cut up my foam peices. I didn't make room for wiggling but when I peiced it together on the yoga mat I just spaced it out. I may go back and cut more. For the cover I dyed pairs of tights to the pink color I wanted and just pulled them over the tail like a leg. This worked really well with no sewing or measuring. I forgot to update about attaching it 😅. It’s been more than a year but I guess it won’t hurt. I ended up having to sew a pink fabric cover for the tail because the stockings were too tight and also a little translucent. I just hand stitched it to my pants after that. Since then Ive seam ripped the tail off so the pants could be used in my little sisters Aladdin play. 😇

Yes you can use fur, but keep in mind that solid fleece and fur are different fabrics. Faux Fur (Luxury Shag) is heavier than solid fleece and it doesn't really stretch much. Crashingspir maybe fabric so it can move more? What kind of tail are you looking for? Stiff or over exaggerated? Also the red stuff is called fun foam.

This is SUPER helpful! I have been looking for a tutorial for super motion tails that actually move well. I know there is a well known creator that has tutorials on super motion tails but to be honest those tails dont move very well... yours is terrific tho!

Lilli Nya yes but you’re probably better off doing a yarn tail since you can get more movement out of it and it works for your species tail shape. You could also try mixing this with the yarn tail method like I might be doing if I get to it.

Lilli Nya I mean this would still work. Both would. I was just considering for movement because the yarn will give you more. They do sell tails I’m just not sure where if you really have no time. And the more you work with yarn the quicker you get. Trust me I made a doll wig out of yarn wefts.

Then get some! Whether from the UK, USA or anywhere else there will be a way to get foam. I live in the UK so I just googled 'foam in UK' and got a result. I use a website called efoam and its quite cheap, of course, if you don't have money for foam then I wouldn't make this lol
