Good luck with the move! 😊 You'll get through it. Just breathe, and go one step at a time. That's how I managed our move last spring without having a complete breakdown (which was astonishing, given my severe anxiety). I am still amazed. This time last year I had no idea we would be moving so soon! I agree, it all happens so fast.

Lucy, you are a grown up and intelligent woman. You can do that. There will be stuff not going according to plan and that's the nature of moving, it has nothing to do with your abilities. I am so happy for you that you will finally have your own home.

Thank you! I keep trying to remind myself of that, my brain just goes crazy worrying and trying control and plan everything and I know I can't but my brain still tries to, especially at silly o'clock in the morning! But yes, I know it won't all go to plan, we've thankfully got various family members and friends helping us move, all of whom I trust and know well so I'm not too worried about that currently. I think once we own it and have the keys and start decorating I'll calm down a bit. I'm very excited to finally own somewhere and be able to put our own stamp on it! :)

How exciting, Lucy! If you get bored with the painting, try some flowers from Johanna's new book on the walls :) Good luck and don't worry too much.

Haha, I'm nowhere near practised enough to be doing that! But I might draw a few in my journal if the painting gets too much. :D Thank you!

Mega congratulations on exchange and best wishes for completion. Few unasked for words of advice from someone who's recently been in this position. While you have the extra decorating help available get them doing all the annoying fiddly bits that take all the time and concentration. i.e.cleaning, filling and sanding (where you removed raw plugs etc) and paint the ceiling and around the ceiling edge, sockets, edges, skirting board, cornice and pipes. Then when you are on your own you can do the more rewarding and quick large expanses of wall with a roller and get much more sense of accomplishment. One person doing all the edge bits seems to take years. One caveat - don't leave it too many days before you do fill in a wall colour in case the paint leaves a sort of tide mark. Before you paint, please please please do what one owner of my last house didn't do......clean up the fluff and dog hair! I promise that paint doesn't stick well to it and it gives a really grim surface. Also, wash walls first with sugar soap, it makes such a difference to the new paint of you have degreased with it first. Tempting to skip this, but you'll regret it. When you get in and need to record all the meter readings write them down and also take pictures. You will lose the bit of paper. Then contact the supplier from the outgoing owner and tell them you have taken over and IF you are going to use them. I got this wrong, assuming the supplier I was using would take care of that bit like they do when you switch. Turns out they don't, so although I was paying a company for gas etc there was another company thinking I owed them for it. So tell both unless you are saving yourself a job by sticking with the existing provider. As soon as you complete send off the info for Joes driving licence change of address. It doesn't take too long to come back and then you have (well, he does) a photo ID for the new address. You also need to do the same for the car paperwork (ownership, tax, insurance, and it is best to do it all at the same time. Take a couple of extra lightbulbs with you as there will definately be something not working the first time you go over, even if you are not staying. Leave a torch there with good batteries as a back up - peace of mind. Take some toilet cleaning tablets (such as Harpic - notsponsored!) so you can immediately get the loo at least feeling a bit more colonised. If you like plants take a couple of those over there, and set up a little corner which is comfortable - nice mug, tea, lamp, blanket, beanbag, couple of books, radio, kettle, saucepan, cans of soup/beans etc. It is going to seem like a hostile environment for a little while but make one corner nice and yours so you have somewhere to retreat to straightaway. Make sure one of the rooms at least has curtains or blinds so if you are there when it is dark/dull then you can shut the night out. Surprising how much this helps. Change all your address as soon as you complete and then leave setting up mail redirection until you are about to move to give maximum coverage. Leave a little first aid kit at the new place. Someone will definately cut a finger, get something in their eye, break a nail. It makes it all feel much safer and controlable somehow if you have the requisit materials to hand to stop the blood flow........ This one sounds daft - get one of you minions to go outside and ring the door bell and knock on the door while you are in various different rooms. Makes it much less scary when someone knocks when you are there on your own as you know what that sounds like then. Try and introduce yourself to neighbours as soon as possible. Again, much less scary then when you are there decorating on your own. If you have a spare phone charger leave it over there. Take a washing up bowl with all the basics including a towels and tea towels to leave over there. Don't underestimate then need for rubbergloves and old cloths. I've gone through so many! I really like the black heavy duty ones - because they are cool! But I ended up doing colour coding. Pink gloves for washing up. Yellow gloves general tasks like washing walls with sugar soap and then black for anything really filthy like mucking out the bathroom. Then you don't get gloves confused. I advise the same with rags, cloths, sponges. Some kind of system so you are not all continually asking each other which cloth is for what. Sounds pedantic but I promise the alternative is worse. Very best of luck with everything.

My goodness, Dee, thank you SOOOOO much for all of this! It's super helpful and must've taken you ages to write up, honestly, thank you so much! The first thing I did after reading it was go and get Joe to read it too. I'll be jotting down the things you've said in my moving notebook to remind me to do it all. I've been writing so many lists and they're all in one notebook so that I definitely don't misplace anything. I've got moving in lists, address changes, moving out lists, things to take first, things for decorating, things to leave, I'm verging on needing lists of my lists! :D Thank you so much for your support and advice and I'll show you all round soon! We're limited with how much decorating we can do because of time constraints so I think we're just doing the walls and having to leave the ceilings til later. Sadly, they really need doing but we just don't have time and can't afford to rent and pay the mortgage for long to have a longer crossover so we'll deal with the rest at later points but I'm super excited to see the walls go from patchy magnolia to vibrant blues and greens!

Congratulations on the new digs. When I heard you start out by saying you’d be away for a while I was.....tense. I want you to be happy and coloring and making videos. Can you give us a tour when you’ve finished decorating? Fingers crossed for good weather. The red, dark red, wall behind you looks lovely. Did you do it?
@ColouringInTheMidstOfMadness5 жыл бұрын
Ah bless you, sorry to have worried you for a moment! I'll be back and colouring and making videos before you know it. I will definitely try to be brave and give you all a tour once it's finished if it's not dreadful. No, the red walls were here when we moved in, they're all done very nicely here so the pressure is on for our new place to make it look just as good or better! We're going for greens and blues there but lovely vibrant ones, not everyone's taste but we like them and hopefully still will once our walls are covered! :D Thank you so much!

Ah Carol, thank you so much! I will definitely be in touch if things get tricky, thanks for all of your continued support! I'll try and do a walk through of some kind if I remember tomorrow. I'm not very brave about doing new things but you guys are all being so wonderful and supportive and it's lovely that you all want to see what it's like etc so I'll try and oblige where possible. I hope everything is going ok with you and I'll be back soon with some colourful content of the wall-paint variety! :D
