Coming from a dietitian 🥰 Vegetable oil is actually not bad for you! Some vegetable oils are worse than others so you have to differentiate. Like sunflower oil isn't great because it contains more of the "unhealthy" fats but I wouldn't choose avocado oil either because of it's bad for the environmental even though it contains healthy fats.. ideally you would use olive oil for salads or steaming veggies and rape seed oil for frying stuff 🤗

I don't know how up to date you are on the latest research but vegetable oil and especially seed oils are terrible for you! Coconut oil, avocado oil, grassfed butter, and olive oil are best. Rape seed oil tastes terrible too IMO.

@@BeccaBender37 its a crazy name for english speakers, but rape seed oil come from rapeseed is actually a flower! the oil is made from the seeds of the plant :)

Most rapeseed or canola oil found on supermarket shelves is genetically modified. Generally speaking, I think most nutritionists would agree that avoiding GM foods altogether is best. Olive oil (particularly Greek or Italian) all the way for my family.

Jen I highly recommend cooking with avocado oil because the burning point is wayyy higher than most oils so it is much harder to accidentally burn. However, make sure you aren’t cooking for anyone with a latex allergy bc there’s natural latex in avocados. Buttttt otherwise it is def the best oil to cook with

Avocado plants need SO much water though.. I wouldn't use it regularly because of it's bad environmental impact 🙊

Great job! Moving forward I recommend getting a plastic cutting board specifically for raw meat. Not sure of the order with editing but always prep veggies on the cutting board before raw meat (or use a separate board) to avoid cross contamination. Plastic cutting boards can also go in the dishwasher while wood boards shouldn't so clean up is easier. Food safety!

That looked so good! Maybe I missed it but did you use any seasonings on there (besides oil and salt)? Once you build up your seasoning collection, that really takes cooking to the next level. I love seasoning blends especially because they make it really easy. Other staple seasonings to have on hand are garlic powder, paprika, and red pepper flakes.

I learn being an adult is to make things easier for yourself. 1. Cut your time in half to cook the air fryer and use less oil in your cooking. There are certain types of cooking oils have high saturated fat contents. 2. Tiktok/ Pininterst. There are so many different recipes you can try to cook meals less than 30 mins. 3. Meal prep. Prepare the meals ahead of time if you have a busy schedule in the week. This will help you avoid snacking late at night and lean toward a healthy lifestyle and maintain weight. 4. Build a budget around grocery shopping. It is tempting to go out to eat but it adds up quick!! This is the stuff I didn't learn until I am in my early thirties! 😢 I hope this helps , Jen. I am so proud of you! Keep it up with the vlogs! Can't wait for a new one and have fun cooking types of foods!

I have a similar story to the vinegar one! I had a classroom party in kindergarten and my mother made me bring Bin-Bin rice crackers to the party. I was anxious when I saw people making eww faces and spitting it out into the trash. I didn't understand why because me and my sister LOVED those rice crackers. Needless to say, there were many unfinished rice crackers by the end of the party 🥲

Okay because I love y’all so much imma share Mumma’s secret recipe to a good base for a lunch that can be meal prepped. 1. Preheat oven to 350 conv roast 2. Scrub potatoes peel carrots 3. Chop in quarters (I like mine bite sized so real tiny) 4. Put parchment paper in baking pan 5. Place chopped potatoes and carrots on parchment paper 6. Pour in a glug of olive oil (or avocado oil) 7. Stir all together 8. Sprinkle with all the herbs you can find (I like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, chilli powder, Italian seasoning, and a little bit of pepper and salt. But I’m also extra). 9. Add corn if you feel craycray (I really like it) 10. Roast in oven for at least 1 hour just keep and eye on everything sometimes around the 30 minute mark I’ll give everything a good mix Also if you really wanna spice things up for all my Canadian babes. Safeway has this garlic butter that is to die for. And I’ll talk about 3 tbs of that and smear it in, which is so good. The best part of this recipe is you can add whatever you like to it. Mushrooms, peppers onions you can add meat. It’s so easy to make and you can make a huge batch then save it, it re heats amazingly in the microwave. 💛💛💛💛💛

I hope you document more of your cooking journey! One tip is to not be afraid of seasoning! That salmon would’ve been even better if you put some soy sauce and whatever seasoning you like in a little marinade (garlic, ginger, salt, pepper, some chili flakes if you like spicy, a little brown sugar if you wanna get a sweeter flavor or even marinade in just premade teriyaki or whatever you’re feeling and sounds like it would be good together) you can put the salmon in a ziploc bag and then put the marinade in and let the flavor soak in to the salmon for as long as you have (at least 20-30 mins is good but you can do a few hours if you have the time to get extra flavor) and then you can just dump it all in and you can even cook down the marinade and make a sauce. If you want a richer flavor you can add a little butter off the heat and let it melt into the sauce while stirring and you’ll have a really nice thick and rich sauce. I recommend following a recipe at first to get especially timing down and stuff but you can always go off script for seasoning and play around! With repetition and practice I know you’ll get it down and you’ll be able to enjoy it a lot more once you get more familiar with your appliances and cooking utensils and stuff. I’m so happy for you starting this journey!
@jj2517

If you don’t have a crockpot I highly recommend you get one for days you don’t have time to cook in the evening. You can put things in early on in the day on a low heat and by dinner time they’re done! I’m from the Midwest US so we do a lot of meat and potatoes here, so my go to is a chuck roast in the AM with some broth (or bullion cubes and water) with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika. Then around 2 hrs before eating you can throw in some red potatoes, I cut them into 1/4s. Then you can add some baby carrots about an hr before eating. You can cut everything in the am, leave the roast alone almost all day and add the potatoes and carrots pretty quickly. If I do have time before dinner, instead of red potatoes I’ll sometimes do russet potatoes, peeled and cut, then boiled, I drain them and then make mashed potatoes with a hand mixer (more whipped texture and very smooth). And if you have time in the evening asparagus is quick to throw in the oven while everything finishes up, I usually just put the same seasonings that I put on the meat! I usually start the roast around 7-9am, then eat around 6, but it varies. The low heat will prevent it from overcooking, and the liquid helps. I also will make soups and stuff in the crockpot, but the roasts are fairly easy and low effort for a good meal!

You should never cook with olive oil or vegetable oil because the boiling point of these oils is quite low. If you're sautéing or stir frying (as you usually are in Chinese food), you'll end up burning the oil. Use canola oil. Olive oil is fine for low temps. You can also use it as a flavoring oil afterward. But I wouldn't cook with it. I also wouldn't cook with sesame oil either - at high temperatures sesame oil loses all fragrance so it should only be added at the very end as a finisher. Science rules! XD

make sure you get iodized salt or check that your cooking salt is iodized! it’s good for your thyroid and girlies have a higher risk of thyroid problems, and unless you eat salmon more often (realistically it’s going to suck to cook every night starting off if you’re used to take out) you may not get it in your diet (which is why salt is iodized in the first place)
