The wellington Sunday fruit and vege markets! They're cheaper than the supermarket. The fruit/vege markets are on every Sunday morning, there is one on Willis St and one on the wellington waterfront. There is also a fruit and vege market in Newtown (I think on saturday morning). Also make sure you invest in a warm jacket for the winter - ideally one with a hood for days when it's raining and also cold (umbrellas aren't really a thing in wellington - it's too windy). You might have to shop online for this, I couldn't find a wool coat with a hood in store, I got mine from Aritzia . Also here are some of my favorite places in wellington to check out For food/drink: -Taste of Home (I HIGHLY recommend their yo po mian - my fave toppings are the spiced egg (on the secret menu) and the popcorn chicken). If you do go to taste of home I'd go down a spice level, their food runs a little bit hotter than other places. -Taste of India is my favourite Indian takeaways -Beach Babylon (wellington waterfront), their 'Rosti' eggs benedict is great -Get a milkshake from mamma browns (one time I got a banoffee pie milkshake from their and there was an actual piece of banoffee pie in it), all of their milkshakes are great THE HOT CHOCOLATE FROM SCOPA (on Cuba st) seriously you have to get this. For coffee: Franks in Newtown Raglan roast (the one on Abel Smith st) Free activities: Wellington Botanic gardens Wellington waterfront Other stuff If you want to see a movie go to the Embassy theatre, it's a really cool building A good/ well priced place to get flat essentials is K mart, there's one in Lower Hutt If you want to get a haircut (but don't have much cash) you can get a discounted cut from student hairdressers manesalon.co.nz/pages/mane-salon-training At the Kelburn campus of vuw they give away free bread in the student union building on Friday mornings Uni/ general tips When you take a course there will probably be some recommended text books which are a few hundred dollars - you can quite often buy these second hand on facebook pages like 'vic deals' or just on trademe. Go to class lol ( I didn't), sometimes it helps to just try and do a 9/10-5 on campus so you're more likely to go to your lectures and also have a study/ workplace (i.e. uni) and a rest place (home). There are microwaves that you can use on campus to heat up your lunch - near Louis' cafe. VUW has free doctors, I think there is a sign-up fee but after that it's completely free. BUT the wait time during the academic year can be quite a while so if you need to go to the doctors book sooner rather than later. If you want to go earlier but it's not technically urgent you can call early when they open and see if there have been any cancellations, this has worked for me a few times. Also wellington busses can be a bit unreliable (maybe it's just some routes I'm not sure), if you have to be somewhere at a particular time I recommend taking an earlier bus just in case All the best!

Wow! NZ is gorgeous! So glad to see you're all settled in. The new chapter has begun- you bought bedding for the first time! I remember what that was like for me too... Lol! Anyway, congratulations on making it safely! Oh yeah, the furniture thing... Maybe get a table with some weight to it, then tie it off tightly to 2 or 3 posts on the deck, or the vertical boards. Perhaps something similar with chairs. Or you could get a chair with a design that would allow you to tie a hammock type thing. Take a tarp, sheet, blanket, etc and put it under the chair, reaching up to tie it to each chair leg, at the top of the chair legs. Then fill it with rocks, stones, or anything heavy. Just a thought. It'll be fun to see what you end up doing with the deck... Have fun with it! 🙂🤗💙

Yeah the borders are closed, except to returning citizens or visa holders. I was able to move here because I am a NZ citizen through my parents. If you watch my video about 'Leaving Australia' I share more about that! No one knows when the border will open, but it would be worth looking into any student visas you might be eligible for. Yes they are very different to Costco, Walmart etc. 😂 I shopped at Briscoes (a homewares store) and The Warehouse (similar to Walmart).

Generally good stores to shop at here are the warehouse & Kmart. Briscoe’s is a slightly more expensive homewares store. Depending on which area you’re in your local supermarket would either be countdown, new world or pak n save. There’s also heaps of cheaper Asian stores that you can find bargains in. Also online shopping like Facebook marketplace, trade me, eBay, Amazon etc are great options as well.

@@EmilyClaireDaly another local protip: there's an early Saturday morning farmers market located in the Newtown primary school netball/ basketball courts from ridiculous o'clock in the morning until 2ish in the afternoon - the close times entirely dependent on whats available. Thought it prudent to mention in case looking for an option that didnt clash with sunday services. I lived in that part of Wellingtin for years and recognized your view immediately. Its a lovely suburb (when local boisterous university students aren't next door lol) and there are some great eating places within throwing distance. Ricebowl burger bar is a Wellington late night staple youll probably come to appreciate one weekend and the basin reserve noodle house (convneiently right next door to McDonalds and opposite an after hours pharmacy too) is a local well kept secret- try their dumplings and youll see why
