A lung tumor is challenging to treat with radiation therapy (www.uihealthcar...) as it moves in different directions as you breathe. Our clinic at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics uses 4D CT scans with CBCT and 3D imaging technology to build a complete movie of the whole lung and the tumor as you breathe. This is then added to a timed system that only turns the radiation beam on when the tumor is in the target area, minimizing the radiation dose to the normal lung.
For more information on radiation oncology imaging, visit www.uihealthcar... or call (800) 777-8442.
Please note: We made this video before the COVID-19 pandemic. UI Health Care staff follow our most current guidance to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment when seeing patients. Why would you use radiation.why not reduce size by grinding it.

Because it would grow back again. If the doctors miss even the slightest part of a tumor. And what if the tumor is inside the brain? The patient would be left with permanent damage AND the cancer would grow back to god knows where (depending on the type of cancer). It’s not just the point of removing the tumor, point is, to stop it completely. The reason why cancer is formed is due to the fact that the part of the DNA chain which is responsible for detecting abnormal cells and ordering them to die is destroyed. So, radiation therapy targets it and obliterates it (the part of the DNA chain that is damaged in the cell which results in the destruction of the tumour). And it takes so long to completely radiation therapy because the doctors want the body to recover from the radiation without the risk of severe side effects. Of course every person reacts differently to medications, but this type of treatment has a much higher chance of survival and recovery than a scalpel.
