Moving to Hawaii: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Aloha kākou! Mahalo iā ʻolua no kō ʻolua manaʻo e pili ana i ku'u ʻāina hānau! I especially appreciate the segment on the price of living here in Hawaiʻi. It's particularly hard for Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Indigenous Hawaiians) to live in our ancestral home. We are also heavily militarized, specifically here in Waiʻanae - the fifth largest impoverished community in the fake state of Hawaiʻi, which, according to a 2010 U.S. Census, is home to the largest population of Native Hawaiians in the world. With so much discontent, sorrow, and frustration as a result of multiple forced removals and displacement from places like Mākua, a very sacred place for our people, I'm glad good individuals like yourselves found a home here. As for those yet to arrive, please be mindful of the Indigenous population. Wakīkī, as is mentioned in this amazing video, is a tourist destination; however, it was not always so. Many Hawaiians were forcibly removed to make Wakīkī the place it is today. It is where our people and culture have become a mockery, where degradation of people and culture is commonplace. And, sadly, many of our people suffer from decades of displacement and dispossession. Come to Hawaii, but please remember your vacation destination is our ancestral home, one we are still attempting to reclaim for ourselves and our future descendants. A hui hou kākou! :)

Benito, this is true. According to the 2019 Census, Blacks make up only 4.3% of the population. Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians are 25% of the population, and are often arrested as opposed to the black population.

Coming from a local... Yes traffic is really bad. I agree. Yes there is quarantine in Hawaii. The bugs, Yes but that’s the price of living in a tropical climate. Get used to the cockroaches. Real Estate is very high. Cost of Living is high. But Hawaii is home. I love it!

Living in the D.C. area the prices seem comparable. Housing, groceries, eating out, etc. In Hilo, the median price of a home is 37% lower than in Loudoun/Fairfax counties. A lot depends on where you're moving from.

Yes, multigenerational families are all too familiar here, mainly to ease the financial obligation regarding the cost of living in Hawaii. I cannot imagine not being able to have your sense of privacy and a home to call your own.

I lived on schofield for 6 years when I was a kid. I saw snow fall once early in the morning one december. Sometimes there was dew and frost on the lawns as we walked to school. It absolutely does get colder than 60 in the winter. We used to turn our oven on and open the door while eating breakfast before school on really cold mornings. It can get down into the high 40s overnight.

We LOVE our life in Hawai'i! We move to big island five years ago from Colorado. We prefer Hilo side to hotter and drier Kona side. That said, we've made the BEST friends who we consider ohana! Big island is VERY chill and not nearly as populated as Oahu. Big island is 4,300 sq miles with less than 200,000 people. Compare that to Oahu 597 sq miles and 960,000 people.

You're welcome! I've always wanted to visit Guam as well. I heard the island is tiny compared to Oahu. A word of advice, I wouldn't do back-to-back OCONUS tours. I'm sure he was disappointed but the financial part scared me... the cabin fever, the stuck on a island feeling, not seeing my family. I have been to Hawaii twice with my family and I’m looking into going to college there and me and my family are looking into living there for a few months to see how we like it and I always wondered how much it would cost to ship pets because well, we own 7 animal excluding fish that we would rehome. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, a hamster, and 2 frogs and all I can think about is how expensive it’s going to be bringing them with us. But hey, Hawaii is so beautiful and when I am traveling there I am at such peace and I am truly happy so whatever you go to do!

I have visited my daughter 7 times. She’s on the big island. Everything is soooo pricey there and the locals are not very aloha. The locals are very prejudice. If it weren’t for my daughter and grandkids living there , I would never return to such an unfriendly pricey place.

My son worked tourism in Kauai. He never really met any folks from the mainland, but he did meet plenty of homeless people, around Kauai who were not from Hawaii. He said for the most part people were ok, but he stayed in his lane and embraced the experience and rolled with it. He stated he would visit but not do tourism work out there ever again. The mngmt was horrible, $ hungry, employees had to ride a transit bus over an hour ride from employee housing to the resort he worked, there and back while you work 10 hour days, and the fact he said they will hire Americans from other states and house them, before hiring people from the mainland was sad , given the fact , the housing and homelessness situation is not good.

We have only had at least three in the home. We called Ecolab to spray the house, and seldomly see them. However, I will never get use to them EVER!!

You can use sticky traps, insecticide, Boric Acid, or just a regular shoe will do the trick. They normally come from outside, but they love a moist environment.

Nice!! Hickam and Bellows were my favorite beaches also. I also developed island fever for a little while after my second week there. The traffic was terrible. What about the geckos? I had them in my quarters and when I first moved in the giant flying roaches were terrible also. Thank God that the military exterminators got rid of them for me. I never saw a centipede when I lived there. They must be newer to the island. Someone must have moved there and brought them with them...smh. The flies were pretty bad. Hey Cherelle, I lived in Atlanta also, well actually in a little town called McDonough, if you ever heard of it. Most of my ken folks still live in the Atlanta area.

Hey, Stephanie! Yes, I'm familiar with McDonough. I have family that lives nearby as well. I forgot about the geckos and their droppings that they leave behind. We just let them be so they can feast on the bug population here. Centipedes are a thing in Hawaii. Every day or so someone in housing is complaining about them. shave ice is how it is pronounced and written (present tense)..On the Big Island, the locals there call it 'ice shave' (reversed). Unemployment rates in Hawaii for some time has been lower than the national average..less than 3% before the covid-19 quarantine which closed off businesses and brought up the unemployment rate to 37% (in April and was the highest in the country back then). watched from beginning to end in one instance...you kept my interest...!

Girl, y'all ain't lying about nothing! I was stationed there in the early 2000s, as an 0-3/0-4...thank goodness we lived on Hickam. I worked at the Federal Building, no parking provided; it was cheaper to take your chances on getting a parking ticket than pay for parking...pathetic. And, it's very difficult to break into local culture/circle. I do miss the weather and the breeze though, and Bellows. continued success in your careers and marriage.

Thank you, Anna!! I don't much. However, you must fill out a form 4140 (Letter of Intent) for your homeschool in zoned for your neighborhood. Once submitted, may begin homeschooling at any time. From what I understand from parents who share the same interests as yours, some highschools will not accept homeschool credits. So that's something to look into. However, many parents suggest that you look into Power Homeschool/Acellus (K-12). The program is fully accredited with teachers who can monitor student assignments. I hope this provides you a tad bit of insight. I hope it works out for you, and thank you for watching. ♥️

I’m in the Navy I was stationed at Pearl Harbor from 2013-2016 I had a good time there. Never experienced any racism the locals treated me well the police were cool they speak wave unless you speed on H-1 lol. Don’t got to worry about being shot as a black man. I felt safer on Oahu than any state in the USA. I’m thinking about taking a government job out there. Only downfall is the cost of living and traffic on H-1 and KAM Highway 😬😬😬 also black people can go anywhere on the island we are more welcome by the Samoans I know this for a fact (Waianae and Waipahu lived there so I know)

Ohau is overly saturated. Once the family and I took a trip to Maui, it was a completely different scenery. Maui is very quiet, cooler temperatures, more landscaping, and very up-country. It was nice to gain a different experience. I would certainly recommend that you visit Ohau. You will not be disappointed.

The only tip that I can provide is for you to do your research about the island itself and what jobs are available. Find out what it will cost to ship your belongings and a vehicle if you have one. I would also recommend visiting the island for at least a week or two to get an actual idea of what it would be like to live there. I hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi, Furtyle. There are plenty of black women who braid hair on the island. I have not had my hair braided by any of them, but I've seen their work, and they do a great job. Braids are more expensive here than the mainland. There is a black-owned hair salon here as well. The salon is called Salon MeAmour, and Ebony is the stylist and owner. I usually see her every six months for maintenance (shampoo & trim). I hope this helps.

Hi, Chastie. Nothing is off-limits here. There are so many places to visit and see. The Four Seasons Hotel in Ko Olina is a great place to stay. As well as Kahala Hotel & Resort and Turtle Bay. Restaurants are plenty: Roy's, 53 by the Sea, La Mer, Morton's Steakhouse. I enjoyed dining at each of the restaurants mentioned, so I highly recommend them. You left out a few important things. I’ve heard repeatedly that of the people who move from the mainland to Hawaii, 95% of those people don’t survive more than 1 to 2 years in Hawaii, and have to return to the mainland, often financially ruined. I heard that there was a lot of corruption in building that elevated mass transit, and the mass transit was started away from the downtown area and built towards the downtown area, so that the system is useless until it’s completed. If they started the mass transit system in the downtown area first, it would be gradually useful to more areas, as the system is being built. The cost of electricity is huge! I think it was about 37 cents per kilowatt hour, which is 2 to 3 times as much as other places. I also heard that when the utilities generate power with wind or solar, they can charge the same as if the power was generated with diesel, even though the cost to the utility is lower, because of the corruption between the utilities and the state legislature. I suggest that you do a video in a grocery store to give your viewers some sticker shock on prices! A dozen eggs cost 68 cents in Florida or Minnesota, compare that to $5 in Hawaii! A gallon of milk is less than $2 in Florida or Minnesota. Even a can of beans, which has a shelf life of years, and can be shipped by sea, the cheapest way to ship anything, costs about 50% more in Hawaii. I’ve also heard that Hawaii has about a one week supply of food. If the shipping lines are cut, then there’s going to be severe problems in Hawaii. So, have a personal supply of food in Hawaii, don’t live hand to mouth! I think you should show how much you’d have to pay in Hawaii for a house similar to a $700K house in Georgia. I bet a similar house in Hawaii would be about $2M to $4M. I also heard that healthcare is horrible in Hawaii! Maybe healthcare is better if you have a military connection. I heard that public education in Hawaii is horrible! A “C” student on the mainland is an “A” student in Hawaii, because they dumb down public education in Hawaii. Private schools cost about $20K per year per student in Hawaii. It’s true, that the climate in Hawaii is nothing short of fantastic! But there are so many negatives in Hawaii, that make Hawaii a better place to visit, than being a resident.

I think the Island is at a better advantage due to isolation. As of now, there are 2,817 presumed cases of COVID, with the death toll at 189. Honolulu has 12k cases that have been reported as opposed to the other counties who have 1,000 known cases or less. All individuals who arrive to the Hawaiian Islands are subject to a 14-day mandatory self-quarantine. Violators have been fined ($5000 max) and imprisoned since the state takes this very seriously. However, people move every day, and I think you should do what you're comfortable with. I hope this helps ♥️

It is hard for me to answer that question. We live on a military installation, so there no out-of-pocket expenses in regards to utilities. We only pay for cable, and we use Spectrum for services. That can range anywhere from $100-250.

Thank you! The annual income of $170k was based on statistics. However, $120k seems ideal. I spend anywhere from $120-180 on groceries bi-weekly. I buy mostly meat and items that can stretch until the next pay period. We also make enough food to have leftovers for the next day. Sometimes you have to make it work without breaking the bank. Yes, city life is a different world-convenient access to just about anywhere. We lived in Pooler before we moved to Hawaii, and that was a hard adjustment as well. Savannah is very charming with rich history. So rich that you could feel some type of presence wherever you go. I enjoyed some aspects of Savannah, but we frequently drove back to Atlanta once or twice a month when need be.

Also, last time I visited Maui I think I probably saw about four black people. Nevertheless, in talking with the locals they are very proud of their land! Hi, Popolo. From my perspective, the integrity of the Hawaiian culture is very much preserved. Although Hawaii has so much to offer, such as the beautiful terrain, weather, and rich history, all are respected. Locals will welcome you. However, some wish to keep the island to themselves. Learn as much as you can before your visit, including language, culture, history, etc. Although some tension exists between locals and tourists, try your best to treat people with respect and kindness. As far as Maui is concerned, you probably did see a few minorities there. I can't argue with that.

I recommend that you join the military wives Facebook page here on the island. You can find tons of information there. As far as your living arrangements, Ewa Beach and Kapolei have charming homes. That particular area is growing with new construction for homes and businesses. The weather is usually sunny with less rain. I'm happy to hear that you have family here to help you with your transition. Unfortunately, we do not plan to stay here permanently. Hawaii is not our ideal location, and it's time for a new chapter. We enjoy traveling, different eateries, shopping, affordable homes with basement lots and plenty of land. I didn't grow up near the beach, so living further away from the water makes me more comfortable. As beautiful as Hawaii is, I would prefer it be a tropical vacation.

It is beautiful, and the people are really nice. Living there is like living in any relatively small rural community but definitely worth visiting, Lots of great things to do and see. Food options have gotten so much better than I was a kid.
