Such a trooper! I just wanted to say that thank you for been so nice to everyone working with the quarantine hotel. I worked with quarantine hotels in Oslo, and it was an absolute mess. I would cry when I got home from work, several days a week. Mostly because people were so fed up with Norway´s handling in regards of the travel restrictions and letting it out on me (and my co-workers). I have not gotten yelled at at so many grown-ups in my life. Anyway, I really hope you´re still enjoying Bergen, and I absolutely adore your videos!

Leverpostei, the jams and Kaviar are proper essentials for me when it comes to meals like breakfast and lunch where bread becomes my best option. The only downside with Kaviar is that your breath really starts reeking from it, so it always becomes my breakfast choice since I brush my teeth right afterwards anyway. Great that the quarantine is over! Now the adventure starts and within a week or so you will be fluent in Norweigen. That was also a good test of food - leverpastej, kaviar, makrill i tomatsås and all the jam. I guess Scandinavians eat a lot of "cheese in a tube". In Sweden you have everything you can imagine as "tubost"". Good luck Drew and I know we want to follow you on your adventure, so keep those KZbin vids coming... :-)

I was hoping to hear from you. Thanks for watching! I must admit, encountering "meat in a tube" the first time was a bit daunting. But I really did like the Kaviar. Pretty sure I have gone through 3 tubes of it on my morning toast in the last month. As to the Norsk... there is a loooooooooooong way to go with my studies. It does not help that everyone speaks better English than me. Difficult to practice when each time I try the person frowns at how I have mangled the language and immediately shifts to English. Pretty sure my skills hurt both their ears and their personal pride in the language. But I will keep trying. Not sure when episode 4 will come. Still shooting it and not sure what the focus will be. @@TheStoryGuide It was just declared that Sweden lifts the corona restrictions for a lot of the big crowd event. And it also is now ok to travel to Sweden from the US and the Scandinavian countries. We had a Korean exchange student living with us 2018-2019 and one of her “goals” was to try the “cheese in a tube”. We don’t know where she read about that. She tried a few but was not too impressed by it, except for the chili version… You’ll get into the language, you can try to find some type of hobby group, like Norwegian carpentry.

Skinke (ham) + ost (cheese) = melted cheese with ham . They also have a version with shrimps, which is tasty. Didn`t you have a coffee machine in your room, or at least a water kettle? I had, when I was in quaranteene in March this year.

I can’t believe the food you got served in quarantine! Sort of horrified. I’m glad you got to go on walks to ease boredom, but it kinda defies the point of quarantine, you might as well live in your house. I like rules that make sense. I lived in New Zealand for a year, just returned to Oslo. The quarantine experience there was wonderful. Tasty, varied food, very strict policies, but sensible and fair, and friendly people. Hope this doesn’t dampen the rest of your experiences! Velkommen skal du være :)

But this is how quarantine works for any Norwegian. If you are quarantined you are allowed to go out. You are just not supposed to visit people, go to stores, etc. Out on the streets it is highly unlikely that you infect somebody. Sure he could have done exactly the same from his house of course. But I suspect this is a middle ground. They got a bit more tabs on you but there is still a major component of trust here. They are trusting that you are only walking around outside and not venturing into stores, visit people etc.

I will, at some point, talk about school. It can be a bit tricky to shoot in a class, I don't want to invade anyone's privacy. But that story will be told once I have a better perspective on the experience. I have a feeling what I think now will not be relevant in a few months. As to the Norsk... That will need to wait until my wife arrives. She was a much better student than I. I was telling the truth when I said, "I should have paid more attention in my Norwegian classes." :)

Growing up in Oregon, surrounded by a safe community of families, I never would have guessed the twists and turns of life would land me here. I love this series can't wait to see more of it! As a bergenser i am glad you ended up here so you can experience Bergen even with our rainy weather. I'd recommend a great and cozy place here in Bergen near the Cinema called " Hem" also there are some bars and cafes down by the docks on the side where the fjordlineship usually docks one called trikken which is in a old restored house that got a nice mood to it. Hope you enjoy Bergen city exploring here by walking the streets will defintively be worth it for you if the weather is nice! Hem usually has a nice mix of older adults and young adults. Also you should visit gamle Bergen or old Bergen in english, it's a little past sandviken :) def a historical place not to miss out on! PS: Also if you are looking to practice norwegian Anki app might be a good option with a large amount of audio to practice listening to "anki norwegian sentences with audio" is the best one i'd say

One of the things I love about this community (think of it as a Venn diagram with KZbin, Norway and Bergen intersecting) is how folks share great advice. Thank you for your list of places to see and the advice on Anki. There is no doubt, my Norsk skills suck. But I feel confident that in time a rudimentary vocabulary will stick in my head. Each day I am surprised that I have acquired another "sight word" where I don't have to translate it into English. I also have a feeling that once my wife arrives from Seattle it will be like I just got my skis waxed and the language practice will be off and running. @@TheStoryGuide I recommend buying fresh bread with a high coarseness grade. Breads in the store are marked based on that. Too much can be hard to digest but contains a lot of nutrients, not enough is usually just carbohydrates, and honestly we're not as good at making them as the French. Our bread tradition is closer to the German one in a lot of ways, but also with things in common with the Finns, Sami and Slavic people in nearby areas. Experiment a bit and find a bread that works well for you. The bread should make you feel full without giving you digestive problems. And it's worth paying extra for good bread since bread makes up such a big part of our diet. Don't think of the bread as a way to hold or contain "the real food" but rather as the food itself with other things being added to enhance the bread. The Swedes and Danes heat hot lunches and breakfasts fairly often. But here it's far more common with just a "matpakke" basically a food package of slices of bread with something ("pålegg", literally "lay on") in between. Many of us eat bread for breakfast, lunch and evening meal with a warm meal for dinner being the one exception. With bread being such a big part of the diet you just can't afford to pick a bread that's essentially junk for those meals.

I mean I actually do like both Leverpostei and Mackrell in tomato, but getting that kind of stuff every day can get a bit boring. At least if you don't have quality bread to spread it on.

Thanks for sharing the quarantine time, its normal that the hotels are used for people who recently traveled to Norway for staying in quarantine, so they have control over it and the hotels in whole Norway had no costumers at all during the lockdown, due to that they survived.

The funny thing is I had forgotten that in February last year (2020) I was there for a beer with my wife. The moment I walked up the stairs I went, "Wait a minute, I have been here.
