I moved 5000km with my cat, 2 days in a ferry and 1000km in the car, and he had zero problems during the whole time! Other cats in ferry were scared and shishing at everyone passing by, and my boy always got up yawning and stretching, like "hi mommy, can we go for a walk now?". In the car he was watching passing cars and sleeping. But he's a special boy. So brave and curious, big boy, grew up with dogs and is more like a dog himself too. 😊❤

When we moved last year our cat stayed between the washer and dryer for the first 48 hours we were in our new home. I know she explored her new home at night while we were asleep as evidenced by her use of her litter box. She also had never done stairs before. She had the new experience of going up and down a flight of stairs and it was quite amusing to watch until she got used to them. By day three she was more at ease with her new surroundings and now she rules the roost:)!

The comment about "western world" was spot on :D I live in Russia, and gabapentin here is _not_ easy to find, _not_ cheap and it does _not_ go in tiny little capsules... It is also a prescription med, and vets are hesitant to give you an official prescription paper because it's a human med. Therefore, it's not really a go with a compounding pharmacy (and those are not really a big thing here). Luckily, I found a kind pharmacist who sold it to me when my kitty needed it. So, THEN, I had to open the capsule, dissolve the powder in normal saline and measure the dosage using a syringe... It is not quite easy to manage the dosage this way, so the next day, I was absolutely terrified for ~20 seconds when I woke up and found my cat sleeping on my chest (she never falls asleep on me) and not showing any reaction when I'm trying to wake her up... She did wake up eventually, so I wish I knew that gabapentin is a _really_ good sedative 😅 So, just a warning...)))
@user-ru3zw6lz9h4 жыл бұрын
Good to know! It will probably be like that in the US pretty soon. Gabapentin is unfortunately abusable and very much overprescribed in the US... most states are beginning to keep track of it the same way we keep track of amphetamine and opioid prescriptions. I wouldn't be surprised if it is reclassified as a controlled substance in the next few years.

I've moved cats many times, some easy local moves and some across several states. Every cat seems to handle it differently. One cat loves to explore the new space, and it's fun to watch the "hey! I know that piece of furniture!" as he finds familiar things in a new place. Another cat stays in "low-flying aircraft" mode for a while, so we keep his new environment small and secure. We'll be moving next year, and the youngest cat will get to experience this. Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Thank you for another video full of great tips! Two months ago we moved houses with our dog and our three cats. We were so anxious about them being all stressed out but with proper preparation in the end it wasn't that bad. A few weeks before the move we started setting up a base camp in our old flat. We chose a spare bedroom and put a scratching tree, lots of fluffy pillows and blankets, a litter box and their toys in there. We also gradually started to move their dishes towards that room until we eventually fed them inside. Feliway was also plugged in. On the day of the move (we had a moving company) the pets would stay in basecamp room and my husband and I would take turns on hanging out with them in that room or being with the movers. At the end of the day my husband would take some items from base camp (like pillows and blankets, that had their scent on them) to the new flat while I stayed with our pets in basecamp in the old flat. He set up a another base camp in the new house, plugged in Feliway and put all of the things from the old flat there, so when the cats moved in they would immediately feel at home. The rest we did just like you said. We kept the new basecamp for about two weeks, the door was always open and our cats would explore the new place on their own. They really settled in great and luckily there was no need to give them any medication. Only one of our cats caused us a all a few restless nights by being up at night and meowing but he eventually calmed down. Also, thanks for mentioning the point of routine. Cats are such creatures of habits so it really helps to keep as many parts of the day to day routine constant. I really think that part also made a huge difference! Loved seeing Mr. Pirate and Clawdia in such good spirits. Good luck with your move!

My personal experiences with my Cat's moving are....interesting, for example I have two both female "Callie and Layla" Callie is a very talkative outgoing Cat and how we keep her out of the way so to speak is, she LOVES boxes, so we take a box she marked as her favorite and we set it out nearby so she can relax there nap etc...Layla on the other hand is the opposite she finds the darkest place in the house which is usually a closet and just stays there for hours probably cursing our existence so I simply move her litter water and food into the closet so she can function effectively while I do other tasks. Other then that very good resource to have, I do have one question though: Any tips/tricks for Cats who like to hide behind objects? when I ask this I am refering to pull out drawers, because what happens is one of them likes to climb into drawers then go to the very back so I can't close it, and I basicly have to wait until they decide to climb out.

My neighbors once had a cat (one of my best friends) but moved into a house 1km away a few years ago to save money. They had a big yard they didn't feel like taking care of, but the cat really loved staking out his territory there. . When the neighbors moved away, I was told the cat was super stressed as he tried to explore his new home. According to them, he kept trying to find the old trees, look for the old staircase, and repeatedly yowl at night. . Then he disappeared. He was very much an outdoor but could always find his way home. . The only problem was that home was his old home. I kept finding the cat staking out the old house and the big yard for weeks on end. . Not the best move for the cat, but I was happy to be close to my friend all the time.. . PS Thanks for all the cat videos. They're informative and wholesome and quite calming!

Do not put a collar on rural cats my mom lost a cat to a hawk because it was able to grab the collar.
@HelpfulVancouverVet4 жыл бұрын
I'd rather argue that collars make your cat more visible to cars and with a bell protect wildlife from predation so they should be used, but you MUST use a special cat collar because it will have a quick release catch that will unclip if the cat gets stuck on something (like a protruding nail, or a hawk).
@frostfang14 жыл бұрын
My cat wasnt exactly from the city, but a kinda suburban area, previously a stray, but that cat could take very good care of himself even after I moved rurally. He knew how to avoid predators pretty well, and cars, and how to butter people up. It helped though that we had dogs and had them outside frequently so I'm sure their scent and presence helped keep the larger predators away. Had to get a ten pack of tearaway collars for my current cat though. Little shit has either figured out how to pull them off on purpose or he has an amazing knack for getting stuck.

Awesome video! wish I could have watched it before moving twice with my flatmate's cats; Usually we would do is to put them in a room of the old house while taking out the stuff (they seemed to be kittery by watching people coming in and out) and take them out of the old place last and once in the new place, just let them adjust on their own (letting them smell and such), usually they seem to adjust after..2 weeks or so.

Oh yes, I often use it together with feliway. They are both fairy low power interventions but get the job done, or at least reduce the dose of other medications needed to control anxiety. We often give gabapentin to cats known to hate vet visits before their consult. Makes life better and almost always works... got one cat recently we gave like a qadruple dose to and it was still lunging at us through the carrier trying to kill us, but this was a particularly harsh case and was ruined by being taken to a terrible facility where they abused it prior to being brought to me. I adopted two abandoned cats a year ago and learned everything I need from your videos! thank you for being there and providing the info I need! Now, we were planning to move overseas and I am even happier to see a video of yours about this too!

Thanks for the tips Dr. Uri, and I hope your move went well! I'm getting ready to move too, and I had just googled this very topic yesterday, so this was perfect timing

You are one of my favorite KZbinrs. So pleasant and informative! I have to hug my cat each time I watch a video because you remind me I love him as much as you love yours. xD

Have a safe move, Dr Yuri. I appreciate the advice. I have moved many times with cats. And with a vet’s advice, it can be less anxiety inducing for you and kitty.

This was so helpful! I'm moving in 2 weeks and I'm very worried about how my kitten will react. Thanks for this❤️

I didn't realize gabapentin could be used in cats. Its a great pain control drug for people. Never thought of a compounding pharmacy for vet needs. Great ideas. And great kitty footage 😀

Gaba helped with the pain of my late Bartok's cancer, too. It helped give him a last summer, of sunshine and grasses, and lots of snuggles! It's not going to be helpful for pain for all cancers, of course! (His seemed to be largely bone, btw) But, gabapentin is an AMAZING tool, that can be useful in such a wide variety of needs. 💕💕💕 Just a thought.

My vet prescribed gaba for my cat’s FLUTD episode earlier this year. An often stress induced urinary behavior disease where the cat will strain to produce urine.

Moving is stressful but this video is a pure serotonin boost.

I'm curious why Feliway works. Wouldn't cats recognize it as a foreign cat smell and not their own? And (7:10) I thought you're not supposed to put food/water near their litterbox because they won't eat/drink near where they do their business.

I think its just a generic 'homey' pheromone. Think about the way your grandma's kitchen smells. You may not to the baking, but I bet you sure as hell like being there! Good point about proximity to litter. It is good to keep some distance, but we are talking about like 3-4 feet here, not another room. For a frame of reference, the studies you are thinking of were don in 2x4 kennels that could be doubled in size.

Thank you for this!! I'm going to be moving with FIVE cats later in Feb and I've been stressing over it a lot especially because I'm taking all 5 of them on a plane. These tips are really helpful and Ill def be keeping them in mind!

Timely video. Tomorrow I take 2 of our cats to the cottage for the next couple months. My family has taken cats to the cottage for decades. They do not particularly like the trip over (ferry trip), but love being there. I will check out the hormone product to use in the car during the trip. Generally the cats are pretty chill in the car.

I perked up when you mentioned gabapentin because I know a human who takes it lmao. Obviously, don't use a human dose on a cat or a cat dose on a human, but the overlap in pharmaceutical treatments is fascinating!

Years ago I had to move about 3 hours away...I had a very quirky cat at the the time....during the drive she busted out of her carrier and the only place she felt safe was on my feet...I drove a stick back then...it was a looooong drive 😬

Ok, so I started watching "Away" on Netflix and within 10 minutes, I KNEW that was you! I had to pause the episode and go researching to make sure I wasn't losing my mind. So great to see you on a show and didn't realize you had an acting career too! Anyway, a few years ago, I had to move with 18 cats 3 different times within a year and a half. It was stressful for me just trying to get them all in cages. Other than one cat running off after taking her out of the cage in the new location and never coming back, we did ok. Lots of litter boxes around one location really helped with the move. I also had one cat spraying everywhere when we were in a location where a cat lived before but he stopped after about a month once he had the place smelling like him. Lots of BOXES! Leave them boxes everywhere!!! We have been settled now for almost 3 years and I dread having to move again. I've never used Feliway, but I may try it. I also use Gabapentin (aka Neurontin) for stressful traveling (ie vets). But, the point is, with 18 cats, any move is going to be super stressful!! Thank you for educating the world on our enigmatic and mysterious feline friends :)

Excellent tips. Also that moment when Mr. Pirate's face filled the whole camera almost killed me with the extreme cuteness. 😻
