Moving With Houseplants: what went well and what I'd change

Moving with houseplants was a BIG project. I wanted to share my thoughts after the fact so that I could offer some suggestions and advice for anyone else who might be moving with houseplants. Hope you find it helpful!

I moved about 30 plants in July, and I was tired. Definitely re-homing some of my larger plants to friends was a life saver. I only lost about 3, bc between the move and Covid-19, I wasn't in the same "plant love" mind space...and I was ok with that. Its October, and I just purchased my first plant since the move (and Covid-19). I definitely learned, that real life is priority and our hobbies are here to bring joy and relieve stress, not create it. Thanks for sharing. Peace.

I drove from Alaska to North Dakota in my honda and boy oh boy, just EVERYTHING needed to be cleaned, and i was totally fatigued afterwards. I just left my car completely packed and did NOTHING for days! So excited for your new plant room and cant wait to see what you do with it.

I’m planning on moving from NJ to FL in the next few months and all I can think about is how am I going to get my plants there in 1 piece and still look beautiful. I feel better after watching this video knowing we all want our green babies to be beautiful and pristine, but it’s ok to have banged up plants too… it’s part of life. I moved last October within Finland, and came to conclusion that plants are a lot hardier than I thought. The temperatures were already quite low, but they had to only endure a 2-hour drive and they all survived. I personally used only cardboard boxes and they worked out great! I totally agree that you should every single plant in some sort of a box. The only plant that I did not put in a box was a weirdly shaped aloe plant and that was the only plant that got a couple leaves crushed. I had a bit less plants than Becca (around 60 at that time) so I guess that made the whole process a bit less stressful ^^

Thank you for sharing, you are so positive i like that. Now i have no where near as many plants that you have but im working on it.. I AM planning on moving but in my same city (thank god) and it will actually be in the coldest month we have (January). Uggg... Im so glad you suggested those hand warmers. The snow is gorgeous but we get super cold and it dips down to 0°F at night and 10-20°F in the day. I live in a very dry climate and I'm always thinking i wouldn't be able to breath in a high humidity lol

I moved my plants in a rented van! It was much less expensive than a uhaul and I was able to regulate the temperature inside the van :)

When I moved my plants I thought it was a good idea to hang the hanging plants during the move. Luckily none fell but they did get a little bruised from bumping against the side of the vehicle. So even tho it is tempting I would say try to bundle up your hanging plants and box them up rather than hang them!

I moved into a college dorm with 80-90 plant's few months ago, only to move back home again for winter break in a few weeks. Im gonna have to move them from home to college at least 7 more times in the next 4 years and I am NOT looking forward to it. Hopefully my parents will help me because my plants fill up my entire small car and I can't fit any of my other belongings!

I loved watching your moving video and this video is so helpful too- I have a question- I am also making a pretty big move at the beginning of May, and I normally repot my plants in the spring- would you recommend repotting them before moving or after? You are going to love the humidity for most of your plants! But I am thinking you probably watered your cactus more in the arid climate. You will have to be especially careful not to over water your succulents and cacti. It can be a real challenge here. : }
