I've been in this glorious industry for 25 years (most of my life), 8 years self employed and agree with every single word you said . My heart drops when people ask for hand weeding, because I know 9 out of 10 times, they're not going to want to pay for it, but it's an opportunity cost for me.

You are quite right to ignore the negative comments.I am a qualified gardener. When I started I was a little snobbish about the 'lawn boys'. Experience taught me lawn work and small, loved, easily maintained gardens is where the money and satisfaction is found. Always amazes me how some people (usually the better off) insist on experience and qualifications while only wanting to pay minimum pay to a gardener! A little older than you, I have taken a break from professional gardening. Similar plan; when I take my pensions I will work 2 days a week, mainly 'mow, blow and go'. You should be a business consultant!

No one complains when a job looks well done. Enjoy your content immensely thankyou. If I can give a bit of advice, and a word to the wise, always sit in the passenger seat of your van to eat, drink, telephone and video otherwise you are classed as in charge of the motor vehicle even though you are stationary and probably with no keys in the ignition Once in the drivers seat you’re classed as in charge of a motor vehicle and liable for every eventuality they can throw at you. Rob. I'm strim, blow, mow and re blow if needed. I very rarely need to double mow a lawn unless it's got too long and still looks rough after initial mow. What i do is if i think an initial mow won't look good is slow the mower on the variable speed so I'm covering the same ground but at a slower speed. Bang on about getting more money for mowing. I stopped doing regular garden maintenance years ago when i realised that's not where you can earn more. A tip around when it starts to look like a drought situation, tell your customers that you'll be mowing the grass higher and add an extra week to the schedule. But do it before the it gets too droughty. They'll thank you when they still have a lawn when others don't Great post.

Also I wouldn't know where to start price wise. As phil Taylor says you charge £10 and someone thinks your expensive and yet you charge 30 to 35 pounds!!! Look forward to hearing what you think!!! Thanks 👍

I worried about this when I started full time about a month ago.. the truth is, if someone is that desperate for a gardener, they would much rather pay £30-£40 for someone to cut the grass than have to touch the tools themselves. So far I’ve been really successful in filling my schedule at good (for me) prices and I’m now already starting to up my prices a bit to anyone new. My advice is to take the leap and give it a go, life’s too short to wonder!!!

Wow, I need to put our prices up ! 2 of us mow, blow, weed, prune, deadhead, feed, water, clear up and go for a 2hr visit at £45. That's £11.25 pp per hour in London.

Hi Rob, I understand the mow blow and go seems nice quick in out get paid job done and I’ve done it. But now I prefer doing a day rate. Turn up at 8am work until 12 lunch until 12:30 then work to 3:30. We work in a team of 2 and charge £380 for that. 1 invoice done and sent before I leave the property. Easy.

Your a good man Rob and I like watching to your videos, but didn't you answer your own question? Where can a normal job attract £35 an hour? Its just jealousy. Now I understand its much less than that, the travelling between, the office times, the machinery purchases / upkeep make the rate much lower, but does the ordinary Joe take that into account? One thing I don't understand as a keen gardener, is I prefer the maintainance jobs, not the mowing .... I don't get the lack of love for the big jobs .... no criticism intended

Your police officer friend is out of touch. How do they think they film Top Gear and Police Interceptors etc with the in car views?
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices2 жыл бұрын
I disagree, received an email from a serving officer down south. Confirmed that I would be breaking the law. If someone sent a video of me to the police , driving whilst recording and talking I could receive a summons through the post. The police are allowed to drive like they do, training etc. Top gear is filmed on private property/ roads. I wouldn’t want to cause an accident or hit someone as I wasn’t concentrating. Ask yourself this. Would you pass your driving test if you stuck a go pro on the dash and talked to it during the test? All the best.
@jamesb88542 жыл бұрын
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices the police are not allowed to just do what they want. Theyre not allowed to just make a video because they want to. Top Gear isn’t always on public/closed roads. Plenty of other TV/YT filmed on public roads.
