If we still had the ranch, i'd buy this mower, we had 3 acres of grass for our yard, I could sit in the porch swing and drink iced tea and mow...a lot more fun than sitting on the small tractor pulling a 4' mower. Love y'alls family, blessings to each of you.

@kpdvw - Once the tall grass is knocked down there are fully robotic mowers starting at $500 that might be able to keep it that way. Set them up, put them on a schedule and just check on them occasionally to ensure they returned to the charging station, check if blades need sharpening, cleaning, etc. Robotic mower should run like a Rumba Robotic Vacuum and not require you to fly it like a drone. Doesn't really matter if they can't get it all done in one charge either since they aren't constrained by a human operators time schedule and can automatically return to the charging base, recharge and then continue to go back out until the job is finished. Mowrator appears to be a well built machine but really needs a full autonomous mode to compete with other true robotic mowers in that price range. Best!

Mower looked to work pretty well in the tall grass. The grass is about high enough to cut into hay or straw. If you want the rains to come, just start cutting hay. Good news on the engine tear down.

I read a review of that Mowrator, and it said it had decent performance running on it's own with it's auto-uturn feature. So if you had a rectangular lawn with little slope and no obstacles it could run with no user input other than "START". It would need solid obstacles around the lawn, like planter bed brick walls. Not quite a robot mower, but good enough for the bulk of most lawns. I think your test field was a bit extreme, what with all the tall dead grass and weeds. Most users would probably need to run it around the lawn perimeter where the uturns missed. No big deal. I don't think you want a hot cam in your daily driver truck. Fine for a hot rod, but not something cranky you want to deal with all the time. Your daily driver needs to work fine at 1000 RPM when you are driving through town.

Previous owner didn't change the oil regularly. When the oil is sludged up like that, it's typical of cheap oil and long oil change intervals.

Ben... I don't know if you have any wrecking yards near you that deal in insurance wrecks. When I was in the Army I had a Platoon Sergeant that he would buy engines and transmissions from a wrecking yard that bought insurance wrecks. They left the engines in the cars so the buyer would see that the milage was accurate and how the car was wrecked. They garanteed the engines and transmissions to satisfy. If the engine knocked or burnt oil they would take it back and replace it with a differant engine.

Truck may be an '08, but it's not rotted like what we have here in Michigan.A mild cam will make it tow better, or move the '65 pretty well. The "Mowrator" looks like a great mower. I could sure use 1.

"while you're in there" are the words for this project. I would go with thr cheapest option of rebuild versus used engine. If you rebuild, i wouldnt cut corners and just invest the money in the engine you can always put into your other projects.

Do yourself a favor,Use a Melling oil pump in the next build.Mellings are dang good and cost is reasonable.New hiper cam would be better & good cylinder hone,replace crank & rod bearings.Skirtless pistons were a bad idea by GM.!!

That mower would most likely cut better if the grass and weeds were green instead of dead and dries out. But it did a fair job as it was. Have to say it's much easier than having to mow with a non power driven push mower. Really the main down side is the narrow width of cut it has. With as much as you guys have to mow that mower will take a while to get it done.

The LS uses a 1.7 ratio rocker, while the standard small-block had a 1.5 ratio.

You said the valve covers were leaking as well as the main seal in the beginning then at the end you said you never checked oil because it never used any. That engine did not get like that overnight, it really looks like the oil was never changed.

@@thepubliceye rear main leaks valve covers pcv caused engine to consume oil, not leak it internal leak burning, which stuck the rings and yeah, it did look like it never had been changed. Still had 2000 miles left on the service. Not sure why it did that. Use Schaffer’s oil in it as well.
