As one of those people who has multiple sets of thousands of roms, I'll say this: Those massive sets should really only be reserved for data hoarders, the kinds of people who like archiving stuff in case it gets taken down or the world ends or something. Whether you're just starting out or have been in the emulation game for a long time, stick with getting the games you need and nothing more. It'll save you lots of time and your hard drive will thank you.

Sometimes emulation brings that out in a person, particularly those who are fascinated with the past we lived but they never got to experience. The same as the Elvis and rock and roll spirit continues on. In that regard, it's incredible to set back and marvel at how the actual spirit of posterity and sometimes even sacredness moves with the ages. And they told us there's no country for old men? Not on earth, no. It's in the mind and the spirit. It was more than we mistook it for. But holy God do I get it!!! I can't get behind a million 4 bit CPU pong board rips. Sometimes I would have to use other versions of mame to get different games running. Fun times, learning mame!!!

Glad to hear someone else admit this. I graduated high school in 1984 and thrived in arcades between '78 and '84, a general time associated with the "golden age" of arcades. And, with only a few exceptions, my MAME collection consisted of roughly 50 or so games that were very popular during that time, such as Defender, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Tempest, and so forth. After 1984, arcades larglely turned to "shoot-em-ups" like 1944 and fighting games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, and the ENDLESS knock-offs and variations. I know that these were popular with some, but they just weren't my thing. I did appreciate a good racing game, such as Ace Driver and Ridge Racer, which came much later, but by and large my arcade interest mostly wanes after around 1983. I once downloaded one of those giant romsets and, aside from just a few oddities like Halloween Donkey Kong or Tempest Tubes, found it way to cumbersome to sift through. MORE IS NOT BETTER.

I agree with the title. I'm someone that's a little obsessed with collecting roms. I have full collections for a lot of systems, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color....some others. But what I've found myself doing, is making a "favorites" folder for them, where I put the games that I like. So yeah, it's kinda pointless to have the entire rom set for a system, but it's neat that I CAN have them. Thing is though, there is some benefit to having massive rom collections. You can find games no one ever talks about. Scroll through, find a game you never heard of, try it out. I've found quite a few games over the years that no one talks about, and I've never heard of, but they're still decently fun games. ________________ As for my current Mame list, I have 339 games, and still adding more. I'm not grabbing everything ever, but I'm grabbing games that I'd consider decent or popular. I have the obvious games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Popeye, Galaga, and Frogger. Then I have some stuff like Ghouls N Ghosts, Golden Axe, Final Fight, Gun.Smoke. And then things like the many versions of Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 3 and the Alpha games, Fatal Fury (every version), King of Fighters (every version), the Marvel fighters. I have tons of NeoGeo games like Metal Slug, Cyber Lip, and such. Some other CPS3 games like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Red Earth. But, then I have stuff like Hook, Kangaroo, Mega Twins, NBA Jam, Golden Tee Golf and Neo Turf Masters, Operation Thunderbolt, The different Pac-Man games like Pac-Land and Pac-Man Plus, Pengo, Pirate Ship Higemaru, and soooo many others. I also have a ridiculous amount of shmups. I'm constantly watching videos like this, or walkthroughs of old arcades (or even modern arcades like Free Play), looking for more games to download. I don't want a massive collection of every single arcade game that ever existed. But I DO want a pretty definitive list of the GOOD arcade games. The ones I could actually see myself or my friends sitting down to play. I usually end up with at least one new game per day, sometimes more. Hell, the other day I added 41 new games to my list. In fact, here's a list of what I have currently: pastebin.com/F6Xe0kMK

I add Battlezone & Stargate. Two absolute classics. You’d hear Battlezone as soon as you walked into an arcade if they had it in the 80’s
@moxxichannel59502 жыл бұрын
Battlezone is one of those games that requires the proper joysticks to play properly - you'd need two joysticks with fire buttons on them. Stargate is another clusterfuck of buttons and joysticks that would befuddle the average MAME gamer. That's the reason I didn't include them - and not because they're not classic. They definitely are.
@bm632 жыл бұрын
@@moxxichannel5950 My arcade machine is actually a Robofendergate (Robotron/Defender/Stargate) and I guess that also allows for Battlezone due to my button layout l. With Stargate by flipping a few buttons - Reverse you can tap with your thumb - just makes life much easier to play, you don’t need to play all of them just - fire - thrust - reverse - 90% of the time. Check my arcade cabinet video and you get what I mean. Tempest/Stargate are my most played youth games when I were a kid - with a touch of Crazy Kong (not Donkey Kong) and Defender.

It's not that shocking since I've honestly never heard of it, but I checked it out and it looks great! Thanks for that! I love when you guys introduce me into new games! I was quite busy in 94 and there barely any arcades in my city then, so it's easy to see why I missed it. Ghouls n Ghosts is a toughy, but I did beat back in the day (Genesis). Just beat Ghosts n Goblins Resurrection on PS5 on the second difficulty setting - which was STILL hard but I was surprised it didn't send you back to the start to actually beat it. Probably the harder difficulty levels do that. Thanks for taking a moment to comment!

I have been dabbling with emulators off and on for about 20 years, mostly Nintendo and Mame emulators. Recently I have been yearning to get into my old DOS and Windows 90's games. My son suggested Steam, but I hate being at the mercy of a web service, so it was either build a Pentium or DOSBox. Not sure I would actually play the games enough to justify the effort, so I procrastinated. Recently I stumbled upon EXODOS and got over 7,000 DOS games... 650GBs, easy, easy install. Now have access to about 2 dozen of my old games and I was right, only a few I really still enjoyed. Because it was based on LaunchBox, I downloaded/integrated a 75GB Mame set of about 3,000 games. Then because I already had Nintendo, SNES, N64, GameCube Roms I added them. It almost all runs from an external 1TB drive, but a 2TB drive could be prudent. 2 to 4TB is completely reasonable and would not break the bank. I was looking at a turnkey solution of 96TB, but that is just ridiculous.

As you can imagine, I totally agree. I'm all for playing and enjoying those "hidden gems" but you're not going to find any by attempting to play 9000 obscure games on your own. Other people have already done that and posted those videos on KZbin. And I still firmly believe that even though you find one game out of 500 that you really enjoy that you've never heard of before, a week later you'll be sitting in front of Donkey Kong or Robotron 2084 again. It's human nature.

Thanks my friend! Those are 3 fine games and I’ll tell you why I didn’t include them: 1) Bucky O’Hare slipped under my radar. I was so busy playing SFII in the arcades (and the ONLY reason why I went into one in 92) that I have never played Bucky. I’ve never even played the rom! I’d head over it but never played it. Guess I’ll try it! 2)Battletoads will always be an NES game to me. I think of the later arcade version as an afterthought. 3) Moonwalker’s absence is the same as Battletoads. I owned it on Genesis and I think I only found out it was an actual arcade game about 6 years ago. I had NEVER seen a Moonwalker cab in the wild, therefore it didn’t make this list. But I do have it on my modded cab!

As a somewhat compulsive horder of video games when it comes to MAME and my arcade machine, If I didn't play as a kid, like ever, it's not in my collection period. I've got way better things to spend time on, something like 600 modern games and growing I'll never get to before the end of my life, don't need 10k arcade and console roms I've never heard of, ie 50 comes of space invaders, 50 clones of street fighter etc. Current arcade list is approx 120 games. As I see some videos like this I'll recall a forgot one from time to time. I don't do emulation for consoles as I have actual consoles of the ones I care about, and having them in the arcade is pointless because the better version of the same game is always the mame version of going to play on arcade controls

Excellent List - we seem to be about the same age and like the same era games (I just hit 50 last month). I also appreciate how you pointed out how some of the original 80's Arcade games just don't work with your typical "MAME Machine" button-Joystick config. Most of my favorite games I'd like to build require special joysticks, Duel Joysticks, or controls that simply don't exist anywhere (yet - although they FINALLY have a Star Wars Yoke available) My favs that require special controls are - Spy Hunter,(so far impossible) Paperboy (also impossible, but I've seen one guy use the SW Yoke) , Battlezone (not on your list - shame!) Missile Command, and the real muther - Discs of Tron...sigh...Anyway - love the vid. Got yourself another subscriber. Game On my dude!

I'll grab as many as I can find, minus all sports titles, low quality "girl's games," super little kid's games, and known to be trash games. Then check the remainder and prune out anything I know I'd never play. Then look into the Japan exclusive titles, and see which ones both interest me and have a fan translation I can grab. Will probably take a long time to get through everything, but with more and more new titles being complete dissapointments, I finally have the chance to go through all the games I missed out on.

But do we need those? I tried as much as possible to stay away from sequels. Time Pilot 84 is fine, but it's not more classic than the original. Great list. I've been trying to get a good working arcade version of Joust. Every ROM I get stops at a 'passed system check' type dialog and is un-playable. I think it wants a button pressed that I don't have mapped on my controller. I've also been trying to find the 3 player version of Rampage but all the MAME ROMs seem to be a Nintendo or SEGA version. Thanks for reminding me about Rolling Thunder... I NEED that. :)

Agreed, obviously as I made this video! I'd say in all honesty there are a probably 300 games that you'd want in MAME to ensure you've got almost everything you've seen in arcades over the years. Maybe. Anything over that and you're getting into bloat. Thanks for commenting!

Having thousands of roms only creates stress for you Reply: ¡Estoy de acuerdo contigo! Los juegos de los 80 son los más especiales para mí. Like a few others, I think this is a great list, though I did get the full romset and used LaunchBox to eliminate a whole whack that I didn't want. Most of these will make my curated list but I know there will be a few not on the list that, for "old time's sake", will also be included, because as most of us do, I have a few that were my favourites in high school (Tiger Heli and Darwin 4084 to name 2). Now I just have 2,800 ROMs to go through....*sigh*. That should whittle down to around 200.
