So very true. I don’t waste my money on seeing ridiculous productions that bear no relation to the composer’s intention and invariably cast with leading singers who would have made the chorus in the golden age (there are exceptions of course). Some good conductors around today but that’s not enough to save opera as a true art. Of course there were always dud performances in any age but when you heard the best it was an artistic experience unlike any other. All that is history now.

I'm old enough to remember when this was the look and feel of most operas: sumptuously traditional and seeming to carry on a great tradition of music storytelling for younger generations. With so many trashy and peurile modern stagings by "visionaries" and academics - who nevertheless lack moral depth and are devoid of logic - I'm very grateful to have clips like this, to be reminded of what DG looked like when I was growing up (1999/2000 ROH)

I agree, his acting and singing are superb. But in fact what makes this production is that all singing actors are truly excellent both as singers and actors. Samuel Ramey is also perfect for the role. Kathleen Battle exudes charm and sexiness, she just marvelous for the role. Her interactions with Masetto are superb. Masetto is also excellent, his facial expressions and both his acting and singing are superb. The whole cast without exception is fabulous. Finally, we must praise the stage directing which is spot on all through this marvelous opera. There are tricky parts in this Opera that are not easy to sell, yet here they are done perfectly. For example, in the finale of the first act when Don Giovanni is threatened, it is difficult to make it believable that he manages to escape in spite of Don Ottavio having a pistol pointed at him, and everyone closing up on Giovanni threateningly. It is done superbly here, and the scene is done convincingly. Kudos uniformly for a superb performance. I must of course mention last but not least Mozart and DaPonte who created this Masterpiece. May there genius be celebrated forever. They reached immortality. I love ❤❤❤Mozart above all others. For me, Mozart was God.
@caltamino Жыл бұрын
Just would like to add a few more comments. I said above that the Stage director did a fantastic job in this production, which is very true. But having said that I have a few quibbles. The most important scene in this Opera is undoubtedly the final scene in which the statue of the Commendatore drags Don Giovanni to hell. The scene is very well done here, but both Karajan and the stage director failed in small ways. In order to understand Mozart operas one needs to study Mozart's methods and musical language to express feelings and concepts in music. There was in my opinion no one else that did this as well, much less better than Mozart. Let's start with Karajan's failing. It is absolutely essential in this music that the music be terrifying as Don Giovanni is dragged into hell. Under Karajan here it is powerful but not terrifying enough. In my opinion Karl Bohm did it better in the 70's recording with Fischer Dieskau, Marty Tavela, etc...Bohm does a tremendous crescendo and ritardando to achieve the desired effect, and I think it is a wonderful way to depict this terrifying scene. Now going back to Mozart's musical language. In his operas Mozart always uses the orchestra to paint the general atmosphere for the scene. A stage director therefore must go to the music to understand how Mozart imagined what he was describing in the music. In the final scene Mozart uses a Choir for voices from Hell, he uses trombones, which he only used for supernatural events ( for example he has trombones in the Requiem), and uses the strings and violins, in particular, to describe the scene. As Giovanni comes to his final moments on Earth, Mozart describes fire in the music rushing with terrifying speed across the stage. This he does by very fast descending scales in the strings, the first and second violins and lower strings. The orchestration reinforces the effect. The stage director in this production missed this. There is no fire or smoke in the scene, and thus he missed in my opinion a major element of this scene. Fire obviously amplifies the terror felt by Don Giovanni and Leporello and the public should feel the same.

Mozart’s music is of course comes first. Don Giovanni is often considered to be the best Opera ever written. The music often has a virtuosity that only Mozart was able to write ever before or after. An example of this is at the finale of the first act, when three orchestras play different tunes, and yet it sounds so marvelous together. Then comes Lorenzo da Ponte’s wonderful libretto. For an example of this we have when Masetto is beaten up by D. Giovanni and Zerlina consoles him offering him “medicine” that is natural, has no side effects, and which the pharmacist does not know how to prepare. The charm of her words is simply enchanting. Finally I want to emphasize the excellence of this wonderful set of singer actors. Though all are excellent in this cast Ferruccio Furlanetto ‘s singing and acting is perfect. Masetto’s acting is also extraordinarily good. Altogether this is a great performance.

@@harrynking777Nobody knows how Mozart would have performed this opera; so saying that this performance was "stylistically not Mozart" is nothing more than speculation. For example, if you were to read accounts of how Beethoven played his own piano music, handed down to us by his contemporaries, you would learn that Beethoven's interpretations and ways of playing his own music would be deemed "stylistically inappropriate", by today's standards. And Beethoven would probably consider the ways pianists play his music today to be sterile and lifeless. And the same probably applies to Mozart. So who's to say what's "stylistically appropriate or correct", in regards to performing a Mozart opera?

I still remember, to this very day, where and when I bought my first ever recording, being this very one, on a 3 set DG CD, albeit studio recording (if memory recalls me, 1987). Being a student, from Serbia, in Thessaloniki, Greece, I always used to spend hours upon hours in Patsis (next to Plateia Aristotelou) drooling over all the Classical CD's. Carefully choosing how I'd spend my monthly pocket-money I one day asked for opera recommendations, since I wanted to explore a new field. The recommendation was: Karajan and The Don, for almost 15000 Drachmas. That was in 1999, and here I am in 2022, still enjoying The Don. Thank you Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart for your gift to this world. And now, literally, "Notte e giorno faticar..."

Given that Mozart composed both, maybe he was just doing a little cover for fun? After all, he only released that opera a few years earlier, so the tune was actually quite recognisable to the audience of his time.

A wink to the opera-going audiences in 1787: the other two musical excerpts played in that dinner scene are from other operas that were popular back then (by other composers, contemporaries of Mozart). Unlike Mozart, those operas & composers did not withstand the test of time; and the only excerpt that remains familiar to audiences to this day is the excerpt from Mozart's eternal masterpiece Figaro!
@perpieta Жыл бұрын
To expand on my previous comment: Leporello names the two operas the (non-Mozart) excerpts are from. The first musical excerpt is from the opera "Cosa Rara" composed by Vicente Martín y Soler, a then-popular composer, with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Among other endeavors, Da Ponte was a prolific librettist, but undoubtedly his most famous collaborations were with Mozart, as the librettist for Le Nozze di Figaro; Don Giovanni; and Cosi Fan Tutte. The second opera excerpt heard is from "Fra i Due Litiganti il Terzo Gode", composed by Giuseppe Sarti. For the third opera excerpt (Mozart's "Non piu andrai"), Leporello says "Questa poi la conosco pur troppo" or "I know this one only too well!" It's not only a nod and wink to the audience, but it's also very apt because singers playing Leporello would likely have also sung Figaro (Furlanetto is a prime example), since Mozart created those two roles for the same vocal range/voice type.

I always thought that he had used this tune to suggest what is about to happen. If you recall the lyrics of this aria: “Non più andrai, farfallone amoroso, Notte e giorno d'intorno girando, Delle belle turbando il riposo, “ ecc. in English: “You won't go any more, amorous butterfly, Fluttering around inside night and day Disturbing the sleep of beauties,” ecc.

I recall seeing a photograph a few years ago of Karajan attempting to get out of a car. He was very ill , and could barely walk. I believe he passed away a few weeks later. Made me think just how fleeting and ephemeral we all are. How transient. However this music , and the plays of Shakespeare will still be performed in a thousand years time. Whatever a year is.
@ericastier1646 Жыл бұрын
Mozart yes, shakespeare not really.
@hermesnoelthefourthway Жыл бұрын
@ericastier1646 What makes you say that ? I simply cannot see a time when Hamlet will not be performed or the sonnets read. Shakespeare precedes Mozart by almost two-hundred years and every single day , his plays are performed somewhere in the world. I cannot ever see this changing.
@ericastier1646 Жыл бұрын
@@hermesnoelthefourthway Very easy to answer. The hyperbolic worshipping of shakespeare in Engand only and its prior colonies and land grabs are merely a reflectance of chauvinism of the english speaking people promulgated by England. Even so, you'll find much less reverence for that writer in India or even usa for that matter. The proof folllows, in Germanic or French speaking countries Shakespeare is just another writer. What doubly verifies this is that the Englanders will equally disregard illustruous playwrights from France such as Molière or the works of Rousseau confirming chauvinism is hard at work. The motivation is easy to understand as well, Shakespeare represent in his plays the cradle of english language culture and national traits. As such it is the core of english national effigy litterature and the vector of chauvinism. Other countries do the same : Russia with Alexander Pushkin, Germany with Goethe, France with Molière or Voltaire, etc.. On the other hand Music does not require a national language it is universal and functions in any country. This is why Mozart will once absorbed by all people of any country making him theirs while shakspeare remain tied to the Englanders north atlantic dreary desolate cold island.

I think his success was also in the careful vetting (auditions) of superb musicians to reaching such pinnacle of perfection. I also notice that Mr. Karajan does not let the edgy fancy of wild imagination, the inevitable mark of one’s own musical indulgences, mar the tempo and spirit of the music in question.

Bellissimo.

@corradomazza61613 жыл бұрын
@@MrThepresident2009 certo.

1987 was the height of analog microphones pre-amplifiers. Digital started ruining everything mid 1990's. We're still in digital mayhem era. It even killed pop music. New technologies aren't always better but they bring new revenues to corporations so they are forced on us. Currently awful glaring and retina pain causing led technology is replacing mellow, natural and pleasant incandescent and halogen lighting. Again because of corporate profit, and governments always corrupt siding with corporations are banning incandescent light.
