Mozart wrote this concerto during his Paris journey, which was the most biographically important part of his life. It was his first time travelling without his controlling father. It introduced him to the best orchestra in Europe. He really fell in love for the first time on this trip, and experienced major heartbreak. He failed to land a good job anywhere, and was underpaid for the work he did. And while in Paris his mother died, causing a family crisis. He remained spirited through all of that. The letters he sent during his Paris journey are full of fart-jokes and other bathroom humor -- more so than was usual, even for Mozart. Somehow, amid all the bustle, heartache, trauma, fart-jokes, hard work and disappointment he managed to write this beautiful and poised concerto. He never received full pay for it.
